| If you play the game right, the attack gauge thing isn't that much of an issue. I'm usually in the thick of it whenever it runs out, so a block is an easy thing to score. |

Oh. Oh?
In the Japanese version it came up immediately, on the first post-empty button press.
Even so, the game should give you the freedom to mash, anyway. Put a little sound effect in there (there already is a sound effect!), for god's sake. _________________

yeah. the japanese game needed some balancing. enemies kept their distance; there wasn't enough actual back and forth. playing it just filled me with critical observations about how fucking awesome it would be if the enemies were, you know, playing with you.
me, i would be, like, holding the block button and creeping toward enemies, who would just keep backing away from me, and the wheels of my head would be GRINDING and i would wish for something to die. _________________

The enemies are insanely aggressive in the US version. Spiders jump on you frequently, rollers charge at you constantly. It's almost Devil May Cry-ish with the AI tactics.
I mean, you actually have to block out of necessity most of the time, instead of because you want more attack gauge! |

Okay, that actually sounds pretty good!
I long for an action-adventure RPG with deep customization and a DMC-worthy battle system.
Man, Drag-on Dragoon 2 would have worked awesome as an RPG. It's a shame it only had like 1/20th the budget it deserved. _________________

Tim, you can't move while you're blocking. At least, in my experience you can't. I can't imagine that not being the case in the original version.
Also, guns.
Anyway, at this point combat is fucking trivial. I got supernova way too early and already have the last 4th best sword in the game. I'm at the end of Chapter 8 (quite a while to go apparently) and every battle, including what is supposed to be some of the toughest in the game takes less than 1 minute.
I didn't even try to make it like this. It just happened. I happened to fuse all the right things at all the right times and blow through every possible decent thing on Jaster's revelation chart. Even the "harder" quarries for my level (40-45) are a damned joke. The pirate ship better be fucking HARD. |

Well, I mean, I would block, and the enemy would move away, so I would move closer to him and block again.

the one main sidequest in the japanese version was a 100-floor ghost-ship dungeon, which was some hella hours. they apparently added a couple more?
yeah, though. it's not a hugely long game. which is good! if you want to maximize your weapons or whatever, i guess it is, though. _________________

Alrighty, I've come to the conclusion that this isn't the game for me. I'm at the end of the Vedan mine, and I still have not had a single moment of fun; the entire game feels like work, and the cutscenes are so inane that I've skipped almost all of them (which hasn't detracted at all from my knowing exactly what's going on. Keep that in mind on your next game, Level 5). Yes, there ARE a million different things to do, but they're all BORING, and also require trudging through gigantic empty dungeons and hoping that a random battle will randomly drop the random thing you need to do whatever. And the whole "explore alien planets!" thing is bullshit when every "alien planet" is actually just a large, empty dungeon with random monster encounters and nothing to actually "explore".
If Circuit City won't take this game back I'll be selling it here for $30. _________________

I almost bought this game but I bought Final Fantasy VI Advance and Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins instead!
The latter is finally $20 new. Which is reasonable. |

I don't particularly like it either, but for some reason I keep playing it and I can see myself possibly even playing it through to completion. I'm like, 11 hours in, which is insane for me for a game that I started playing Saturday Morning, and I just unlocked the factory (which I do actually kinda dig).
I think the big reason I'm actually putting time into this is that I kept telling myself that I didn't want to get it because I knew I wouldn't put enough time into it to justify the cost. Kind of a silly reason, eh?

I kind of know what you mean. Night before last, I said "enough of this shit", put it back in the case, found the receipt, and put it next to the door to try to return it the next day. The next day I thought "well, maybe I'll give it another try", spent the whole day playing it and not having fun (I was home sick) and ended up again saying "enough of this shit", putting it back in the case next to the door with the receipt so this evening I can try to return it.
So on the one hand this is the only game that I've ever decided to return and then decided to give one more try, but on the other hand after giving it that "one more try" I was even MORE convinced that I wanted to return it.
I haven't done so well on buying games so far this year. The two games I borrowed from other people (Okami and Bully) I've loved, whereas all three of the four games I've bought that I've played so far (God Hand, Elite Beat Agents, and Rogue Galaxy) I've hated. Now I'm kind of afraid to play Disgaea 2, which is the fourth game I've bought this year but have not yet played, because although I'm SURE I'll love it given my love of the first Disgaea, so far my buying-games-luck hasn't turned out so well this year. _________________

Seriously. I am fucking disgusted.
God Hand embodies everything that is good about video games as a form of entertainment and a medium of expression. To deny the greatness fo god hand is to deny video games, nay, to deny LIFE. You, sir, have brazenly disavowed the one truth that this universe offers, and that is that God Hand IS video games.
Begone from my sight, loathsome wretch.
(but seriously I don't get why ANYONE on these forums wouldn't like God Hand, if not for the gameplay then for the presentation...it has a wisecracking jackass with a magic hand and a hot female foil beating the asses of every stereotypical Japanese beat-em-up-game adversary imaginable in semi-glorious 3D with a quirky and peppy soundtrack, classically bad but well-acted-and-delivered English one-liners, and a truly smarmy hardcore attitude that dares to gleefully condescend to the weaker and less dedicated player in a world of prissy hand-holding and casual-gaming softness. And above all else God hand takes NOTHING seriously -- not even ITSELF. Now if THAT'S not a select button game, I don't know WHAT is.) _________________

| I am really enjoying this game so far, but almost every second that I play it, I think about Skies of Arcadia, and how much I want to play that again. However, I know how these things work. I know that if I play some SoA, I will only play about ten minutes, say, "Oh, that was fun," and then not want to play either of them. |

| I gotta tell you, you'll know when it hits, but holy fuck does this game turn up the kickass factor. It reminds me of the stuff Square would make if they didn't start licking balls back on the Playstation. Just a fantastic games. If the dungeons were each an hour shorter, it would be one of the best 5 RPGs I've ever played. GodDAMN are there some good story pieces. The end better not let me down. |

That's kind of what I say in my review!
You can't expect a reviewer to play a 40+ hour game all the way through!
That would be insane!

You also can't expect anyone other than the most hardcore/bored players to wade through 30 hours of absolutely horrible plot and dialogue and then reward them at the end of it with good plot and dialogue.
I traded my Rogue Galaxy last night to a friend for Bully. I am very happy. _________________

Too bad they very obviously don't. And by "they" I mean, nearly all of them.
I've actually managed to beat a number of super long games before review provided I get them at least a week early. |
