I don't see what's so unlikable about the game, really. It's the best action RPG I've played since Seiken Densetsu 3, and it's so, so tongue in cheek about itself that I can't fault the cliches.
Though, I do agree with aerisdead. The sooner I get full control over my party lineup, the better. Jaster, Zegram, Simon will be a permanent fixture. |

| thank god this game lets everyone else level up at the same time. that drove me nuts in ff12. Sure they got LP, but their EXP was non-existant. The non-party people level up slower than the partiers in RG, but it's at least something. |

I'm at chapter 5 and I really like it. Zegram's badass.
Though my party gets raped often. Especially by those damn spiders. >:/

| You don't have to worry about length, rapist. The length is just fine. Dungeons get longer and longer. And well, there's a shitton stuff to do. At Chapter 7 I think it was, you unlocked the ability to go to other planets and start doing sidequests and optional bosses and shit. |

Bought this today in addition to Taito Legends for five bucks and FFV for GBA for FULL PRICE.
Me and my sister played the hell out of bubble bobble and the game where you bounce your child on a trampoline.
It's SUPERTIME!
We were dissapointed to find out it's actually suppertime.
Guess we can't read?

in about 3/4 hours of the game, i'm really annoyed with the hand-holding in the game up untill now, i feel i'm still stuck in tutorial mode.
the voice-acting is a lot better than many other rpgs, but because i've always thought of that this game was a(the?) japanese starwars i had secretly hoped for more mature choices of the voices. it works better for dq8 imo. |

I finally played a couple hours of this last night. Although I like it over all, I have two really big problems with it right off the bat:
1. Throwing those two "Giants" at you right at the beginning of the game, and right after taking away your babysitter. Way to totally fuck up the difficulty curve, guys.
2. Although the voice-acting is pretty good, the cut-scenes and dialogue are literally the most inane I've EVER heard in a video game.
"Look, Jaster! It's a toothbrush!"
"tooth... brush..."
"You can use it to clean your teeth if they get dirty!"
"Well, my teeth ARE kind of dirty!"
"Really? Wow! Maybe you could find something to clean them!"
"What about that thing we just found?"
"You mean that toothbrush?"
"Yeah! Do you think that might work?"
"You mean, to clean your teeth?"
"Yes, maybe I could use the toothbrush to clean my teeth, which are dirty."
"Well, I guess you can give it a try!"
I'm already REALLY looking forward to the point at which the game opens up and stops being so plot-heavy, because so far the plot is terrible. I'm ALMOST to the point of skipping all of the cutscenes, because so far they have detracted from the game rather than contributing to it.
On the upside, I like the maturation of Dark Cloud 2's combat system, and I like the ability grid, although I'm afraid I won't be able to play golf or go fishing in dungeons after I've beaten them. _________________

It appears that this kind of dialogue continues throughout the game.
It's very annoying even if I actually quite like this game. _________________ "Did you read that mr. ignorant new games journalist? YOU JUST DON'T FUCKING GET IT. "

I'm guessing you're referring to the power glove scene? The reason it did that is because you got the glove before you came to the monument. If you went to the monument first, they'd have said "I guess we need something to get by here" and turned around. Since you got the glove first, they played the first and second sequences together. Which makes things sound ridiculous. _________________

That was what I was referencing directly, but there have been many other very similar cutscenes (like the TOTALLY pointless flashback Jaster has when he first gets on the ship).
Actually, I HAD gone to the monument first. When I got the glove, the girl whose name I've forgotten because I just call her "Tits McGee" said "Hey! Maybe we can use this glove to move that giant statue!", which made it even more retarded that it played through the whole toothbrush-like dialogue when I went back to the monument. _________________

It's just cliche RPG stuff, guys. Don't expect this to be the RPG to make you love RPGs again.
That said, luvcraft, they throw those dudes at you in the first level because the game is kinda challenging! It seems like I get my ass handed to me at the beginning of every new area, until I find/synthesize some better weapons and/or figure out better ways to kill groups of enemies.
The bosses are all quite challenging, though they usually rely on a gimmick that you can exploit to take them down. For example, the giant tentacle frog in the jungle that can potentially KO your entire party with one attack!
The game gives you the option to powerlevel and plow through stuff, or get better at the game and plow through stuff. I like this approach!
That said, I like that the game is challenging, especially since the last RPG I played, FF12, was an utter cakewalk (albiet an interesting and enjoyable one) once I worked out good gambits. |

Challenging is OK, but when one of the first level mid-boss is tougher than the first level end-boss, and there are TWO of them simultaneously, somebody in level design forgot their idiot pills that morning. Just one of those Giants would've been plenty-o-challenge for your first fight without the babysitter. I died four or five times on that fight, which is NOT something you want to happen less than ten minutes into your game (see also God Hand). Since that fight the only time I've died was on the first mimic in the jungle, and that was just because I was being really really lazy.
My guess is that it originally WAS just one of them, but then either one of their veteran playtesters beat him too easily, or a playtester who was new to the game got lucky and beat him too easily, and they decided to just throw in a second Giant at a point where it was too late to get a good playtesting of that section again and they shouldn't have been making such changes.
But again, with the exception of that one scene, the balance and challenge has been great, and the gameplay has been very enjoyable.
As I play this game, I keep finding myself wondering what True Fantasy Live Online was going to be like. _________________

So I just skipped straight to page three.
Does this game say "Boy, have I got some item collecting and synthesizing bullshit for you! Are you ready to waste some serious time?" like Dark Cloud 2 does? Or is it, you know, a game you can play and have fun with? |

Anyone who did not purchase it explicitly for the item collecting and synthesizing bullshit was ill-informed.
At this point I'm actually kinda worried it won't have ENOUGH item collecting and synthesizing bullshit like Dark Cloud 2 did. _________________

You mean the final products of all the weapon synthesis? I preferred bludgeoning enemies to death with a giant frozen tuna, myself. _________________

Oh, god, there's PLENTY of it. You don't necessarily have to DO any of it, but it's there.
The way the weapon synth system works, you have a Skills meter on every weapon that increases as you use it in battle. Once it reaches MAX, you can combine it with another weapon of the same type that is also MAXed to create something that kinda has the properties of the two things that went into it. The thing is, the speed that you gain Skills experience is pretty fast. By the time you find the sword stronger than the one you have, the one you have is MAXed. You just get that new sword, enjoy the attack bonus, and then when that one is MAXed, combine it with your old sword to make something better than both of them. It often gives you that little boost you need to get through the tougher parts of some dungeons, but you never really have to grind for it.
Keep in mind, I just broke out of the prison, which is chapter 5, I think, so I could be wrong about how the game develops! |

Yeah, those were what I was referring to. I was quite partial to shooting a monster up with a submachine gun, and using swords that didn't look like giant Tiki surfboards.
Edit: Actually I guess it would qualify as a mini Tiki surfboard, but that's not the point. And it had a pinwheel on it. _________________ I can no longer shop happily. |

Man, I can't seem to find someone with pictures of the final weapons. Still, I'm pretty sure I unlocked all the forms and I'm pretty sure I hated them all. When I say that I enjoyed shooting enemies with a machine gun I was actually referring a particular gun - can't remember what the actual gun that it resembles is called. I think it was red and black.
Anyways, I'm just saying I realize that one of the final guns was technically a machine gun, but I think I hated the way it looked also.

You know, though that gameplay was perhaps not real at the time of the showing, it most certainly, uhhhhhhhhhhhh, is pretty much what the game is like.
I mean, is it that hard to imagine that a game could play like that? Is it really that farfetched? It's not like it's saying it's going to turn your HDTV into the Holodeck on Star Trek the Next Generation.
Also anyone who's messed around with the Gambit system in FFXII can tell you that, yeah, all White Knight Story is, apparently, is an evolved Gambit system. Same thing with FFXIII, I guess.
| Moogs wrote: |

Hey! Fuck you! I can froth over multiple things at once, I'll have you know.
And yeah, Lost Odyssey is most certainly going to be the more "important" game than White Knight Story. I guarantee it.
Hino and Level-5 have about two or three more original games to go before they finally perfect it, I guess.
Anyway, the Japanese version of the English version of Rogue Galaxy comes out here in Japan in about a month, so maybe I'll play through that shit again. I kind of liked it when I played it, just a couple things made my head about to EXPLODE.
Well, one thing, mostly.
You're attacking enemies, and then your little attack meter depletes. Press the button ONCE after the attack meter is at zero, and a message pops up on the screen:
| the message wrote: |
| YOUR ATTACK METER IS EMPTY! PLEASE WAIT FOR IT TO RECHARGE -- OR DEFEND A SINGLE ATTACK TO RESTORE THE METER TO FULL! |
This is just one of the many messages that, you know, you get the first time you play the game, along with "how to equip a weapon" and stuff.
However, it DOESN'T STOP COMING. Every FUCKING time your attack meter is decreased to zero, the message pops up, right there in the dead center of the screen, freezing the game for a second. It got to a certain point where I had to put the game down for three months before I could even think about playing it again.
Now, anyway, the question I wanted to ask of this thread. Uhhhhhhh, did they fix the above horrible drastic problem? _________________

Well, in the US demo, anyway, it doesn't pause the game when it does it. It just takes up a big part of the screen to tell you to do that stupid guard or wait crap. _________________
