The American one? I'm dying to get some good impressions from you guys because for some reason I just can't get myself to actually REALLY want to buy it.
I know Tim was completely enamored with it a long time ago but that was just one person! I need multiple "views". I'm thinking a set with like a couch and some chairs and maybe Barbara Walters could moderate?

| It supposedly came out on the 30th. Could have fooled me, though I haven't exactly been checking around in stores. |

Oh, I also got the fucking monstrous strat guide. Seriously, this title could have more shit in it than Dark Cloud 2. You could almost base whether or not you want to purchase it on the size of the guide alone. Main story though - seems to be about a third of the book (I haven't read a single bit of that, I bought it for the Double Jump-Style spreadsheets in the back).
Anyway, yea, more tomorrow. Now I sleep. BTW, when I post stuff, it'll be around midnight Arizona time (mountain now I think). I don't get off work til 8. |

Fuck, Double Jump made the strategy guide? Damn, this game wasn't even on my radar until you said that. I practically buy games just so I have an excuse to own another strategy guide made by them. _________________ I can no longer shop happily. |

Does this game have a pre-order bonus or what? I went into Gamestop a few weeks ago to ask when it was going to come out, and they told me when and that it would have a pre-order bonus. They said that they already had it in the back. I go to buy it today, and they deny all knowledge of a pre-order bonus.
I'll have some impressions of the game later. |

Stopped in Giruvegan in early december. Swore to complete it before RG comes out. Had forgotten about RG recently and planned to beat some old games (Chrono Cross, DQVII) in the upcoming semester break.

giruvegan is the very last bit of a (long) low point for the game, extending since maybe as far back as mosphoran or therabouts.
that area between the phon coast and the sochen cave palace? that's just there to insult you, i swear.
i mean, yeah, you've got hunts to do all the while, and ultimately i'm not sure how i feel about what that does to the pacing.
after giruvegan it's a totally decent straight shot to the ending, though!
...?

I didn't EVER enjoy that.
It takes the whole sense out of playing the game.
But lets not derail this thread, I'm really excited about RG and here to get early impressions.
Although: it was Tims frothing that got me excited in the first place. That didn't turn out too well with FFXII... |

Rogue Galaxy is clearly the best PS3 game released so far! (see, and you people thought I could only joke about the Wii's blah early lineup)
I actually haven't played it yet, but I'll be picking it up in the next day or two. And I still haven't finished FFXII either. Or Devil Summoner. Fucking RPGs indeed. I hope I can knock out at least one of them before Persona 3 comes out. Shit, I've still got random PS1 RPGs in my "to finish" pile. One day when I become immortal and have no obligations at all... |

| I actually thought the desert was the low point of FF12. You don't have to do the hunts, you know! I only did enough so I could buy bubble belts from the Clan merchant in Rabanastre, since constant effect HPx2 is totally worth doing 14 or 15 hunts. |

yeah um i was looking at my (shoddy) laptop screen in a very very sunny room. it turns out i'm crazy, which, uh, makes sense anyway, as to the best of my knowledge there's no way to make individual characters display differently as they are being input in a field like the one i'm typing into right now.
also, re: hunts - the real "enough" line is the cat-ear hood. thing doubled my fran's damage. |

This can't be stressed enough!
re: FF12
I didn't do a single hunt (aside from the one they force you to do) until way, way after I beat the game the first time (that is, near the end of my tinkering-around second playthrough).
My friend here in teh Japan is at something like 120 hours on the game and he still hasn't approached the final dungeon and he has the fuckin' balls to tell me he's getting tired of the game. Finish it, then! _________________

I also contend that FFXII was fun without the hunts, which I also didn't mess around with unti lthe second playthrough.
Also, I just picked up this other game we're talking about, along with the guide. I'm another one of those guys who buys games that DoubleJump makes guides for I'M LOOKING AT YOU GENJI. |

The Rogue Galaxy demo really didn't do much for me. The graphics are well designed, certainly, but the frame rate in combat is shitty. The character designs are not especially bad, but they're not particularly inspired either. Points for equipment actually altering your character's appearance, though. The concept of your characters chattering as you wander around the world is initally an appealing one, but after a while, their repeated, vapid commentary is just irritating. Combat is honestly fairly boring, and I was never a fan of having to go into a menu to use special attacks in an action RPG.
However, I suppose if you enjoyed Dark Cloud 2 you'll probably enjoy this game too. I just wish I had actually enjoyed DC2. I really wanted to, but the game just wasn't together enough for me to do it. _________________

I'm quite enjoying this.
Legato, you can turn the commentary off. I highly recommend it.
The game has enemies that kind of appear out of nowhere, but there are absolutely no loading times whatsoever, so it works really nicely. |

Well its not a matter of loading times, I just tend to despise random encounters. So do appear out of thin air, just like a random battle. Or do you get a chance to avoid them if you wish to? _________________

I am pretty sure they can not be avoided, but so far they have not happened very often (to me at least).
The cutscenes in this game are some of the most gorgeous things I've ever seen. |

So I'm kind of really liking the rewards you get for killing x number of enemies. I think its a good way to make me feel less upset about random battles, since its always towards progress of some kind.
Also, why do so many reviews compare the combat to Kingdom Hearts? I mean yeah, they're both realtime, but RG seems to realize that real time combat requires real time action. KH's insistence on an old turn based menu puts it on a level of ridiculousness that few can match. |

I think the comparison comes from the mashy nature of the game.
I'm going to go out on a limb and say that this game is MY Seiken Densetsu 5, and that goofy thing over there doesn't exist. Or whatever the hell # it is. Someone told me SD4 was already out years ago. I don't know!
By the way, the CG cutscenes were (apparently) all done by Studio 4C. This is why they are awesome.
Oh, I have kind of ran into a problem with the game. Has anyone else noticed all the goddamned Kisala upskirts?

Rogue Galaxy: What I Think Thus Far
| Quote: |
So Rogue Galaxy dropped this week for the PS2. Reviews across the board have been middling at best. Many of the reviews mention things like "Level 5 did such great work on Dragon Quest VIII that Rogue Galaxy simply pales in comparison." Bullshit. Dragon Quest VIII, while expertly constructed, was terribly slow and boring. You ran too slow, the game progressed too slowly, fights took too long, unlocking everything took way too long (goddamn metal BS), and it looked like Dragon Ball. Ok, that last part is a bit of a copout on my part. I can't be bothered to think very hard right now. But I've put a few hours into Rogue Galaxy and I can honestly say that I'm enjoying it.
Loot. There's a hell of a lot. I like loot, I mean, who doesn't? Eight million people can't be wrong. As far as I'm concerned, short of Diablo, Rogue Galaxy does loot right. Also, you're a fucking space pirate. You hunt monsters, get treasure, and fly around space. That's pretty awesome, right? Yea, it is. But I'll tell you, there's something that really eats at me. Double Jump did the strategy guide. At first I was stoked because I'm a big Disgaea fan. But Rogue Galaxy is nothing like Disgaea. And yet, it still seems to have an unbelievable amount of "content." That's in quotes since there's more optional content than real storyline content. That doesn't really bother me. What bothers me is what I've looked at thus far in the book. If you're like me, you read strategy guides an area back. After you finish an area and move away from it, you read it for what you might have missed. Well, in the first area, it looks like I have to come back and farm the shit out of it later in my quest to 100% the game. Ugh. I'll do it, the combat is actually pretty fun (I like it more than say, Devil Summoner), but I can't say I'll enjoy it. However! There's no question that the sum of the game will be better than it's parts (especially the part I just mentioned). It's very well constructed and the pacing, thus far, seems spot on.
The other thing I feel compelled to mention is the revelation flow chart. It seems Level 5 wanted to create a skill system that was the bastard child of Final Fantasy XII and Digital Devil Saga. The biggest difference is each character has it's own set of skills and the entire thing is based around gathering items. I can't complain about this, I knew going in that Level 5 made Dark Cloud 2 and it's fairly obvious that they're obsessed with collection games. Anyway, you get items and place them into this big flow chart and each time you fill in a little section you unlock a new skill. It's actually a really cool system, short of the fact it's a total timesink. There's no doubt going to be a need to farm enemies all throughout the game to get rare drops to fill up the better skillsets. Being obsessive about treasure hunting in video games, I'll have no problem with this, but for some it could be a major turnoff. Proceed with caution, YMMV, etc.
I don't feel comfortable reviewing this yet simply because I haven't played nearly enough of the main storyline, the minigames, or optional content. But thus far it's grabbed me by the balls pretty good. Which is a shame, since I was well on my way to 100 hours in Disgaea 2. Ok, I'm done now, and I'm pretty sure I've said a lot of nothing. I feel pretty compelled to say that if you like traveling around exotic worlds gathering treasures, slaying named monsters, meeting a new version of C-3PO and R2-D2, and like Space Pirates that you really can't go wrong. Or at least, that's what I think thus far. |
Sorry that took so long to post. Halfway through playing I wanted some pancakes and waffles, so we made some.
Also, yes, random battles. And... I've heard cases of stuttering when played on a PS2, almost non-existant when played on a PS3 (sometimes it stutters when you jump out of a building and drop off the stairs real quick, I think it just kinda wigs out a bit). |

This is the kind of info I was looking for.
I'm going to roll a d6 tomorrow and on a roll between 1-5 I'm picking it up. A straight six is a "wait till next payday" kind of thing.
