Picking it up in about 6 hours. I'll have some impressions tomorrow night I suppose.

Oh, I also got the fucking monstrous strat guide. Seriously, this title could have more shit in it than Dark Cloud 2. You could almost base whether or not you want to purchase it on the size of the guide alone. Main story though - seems to be about a third of the book (I haven't read a single bit of that, I bought it for the Double Jump-Style spreadsheets in the back).

Anyway, yea, more tomorrow. Now I sleep. BTW, when I post stuff, it'll be around midnight Arizona time (mountain now I think). I don't get off work til 8.

Rogue Galaxy: What I Think Thus Far

Quote:
So Rogue Galaxy dropped this week for the PS2. Reviews across the board have been middling at best. Many of the reviews mention things like "Level 5 did such great work on Dragon Quest VIII that Rogue Galaxy simply pales in comparison." Bullshit. Dragon Quest VIII, while expertly constructed, was terribly slow and boring. You ran too slow, the game progressed too slowly, fights took too long, unlocking everything took way too long (goddamn metal BS), and it looked like Dragon Ball. Ok, that last part is a bit of a copout on my part. I can't be bothered to think very hard right now. But I've put a few hours into Rogue Galaxy and I can honestly say that I'm enjoying it.

Loot. There's a hell of a lot. I like loot, I mean, who doesn't? Eight million people can't be wrong. As far as I'm concerned, short of Diablo, Rogue Galaxy does loot right. Also, you're a fucking space pirate. You hunt monsters, get treasure, and fly around space. That's pretty awesome, right? Yea, it is. But I'll tell you, there's something that really eats at me. Double Jump did the strategy guide. At first I was stoked because I'm a big Disgaea fan. But Rogue Galaxy is nothing like Disgaea. And yet, it still seems to have an unbelievable amount of "content." That's in quotes since there's more optional content than real storyline content. That doesn't really bother me. What bothers me is what I've looked at thus far in the book. If you're like me, you read strategy guides an area back. After you finish an area and move away from it, you read it for what you might have missed. Well, in the first area, it looks like I have to come back and farm the shit out of it later in my quest to 100% the game. Ugh. I'll do it, the combat is actually pretty fun (I like it more than say, Devil Summoner), but I can't say I'll enjoy it. However! There's no question that the sum of the game will be better than it's parts (especially the part I just mentioned). It's very well constructed and the pacing, thus far, seems spot on.

The other thing I feel compelled to mention is the revelation flow chart. It seems Level 5 wanted to create a skill system that was the bastard child of Final Fantasy XII and Digital Devil Saga. The biggest difference is each character has it's own set of skills and the entire thing is based around gathering items. I can't complain about this, I knew going in that Level 5 made Dark Cloud 2 and it's fairly obvious that they're obsessed with collection games. Anyway, you get items and place them into this big flow chart and each time you fill in a little section you unlock a new skill. It's actually a really cool system, short of the fact it's a total timesink. There's no doubt going to be a need to farm enemies all throughout the game to get rare drops to fill up the better skillsets. Being obsessive about treasure hunting in video games, I'll have no problem with this, but for some it could be a major turnoff. Proceed with caution, YMMV, etc.

I don't feel comfortable reviewing this yet simply because I haven't played nearly enough of the main storyline, the minigames, or optional content. But thus far it's grabbed me by the balls pretty good. Which is a shame, since I was well on my way to 100 hours in Disgaea 2. Ok, I'm done now, and I'm pretty sure I've said a lot of nothing. I feel pretty compelled to say that if you like traveling around exotic worlds gathering treasures, slaying named monsters, meeting a new version of C-3PO and R2-D2, and like Space Pirates that you really can't go wrong. Or at least, that's what I think thus far.

Sorry that took so long to post. Halfway through playing I wanted some pancakes and waffles, so we made some.

Also, yes, random battles. And... I've heard cases of stuttering when played on a PS2, almost non-existant when played on a PS3 (sometimes it stutters when you jump out of a building and drop off the stairs real quick, I think it just kinda wigs out a bit).

It is mostly an adult cast. The lead character isn't whiny though. At least not yet.

Logged another 5 hours tonight. They recently introduced a really base form of crafting/fusion. Also, armor changes appearance - which is nice. The weapons are getting cooler. The guns steal from Metroid and...gasp... improve on the concepts.

Basically, yea, being a space pirate isn't so bad.

Edit: Anyone complaining about Kisala (the love interest) is overexaggerating. Unless they're constantly using her as the main party member or purposefully going for a pantyshot, any fanservice that might show up is COMPLETELY non-invasive. It does not hurt the game one bit.

You don't have to worry about length, rapist. The length is just fine. Dungeons get longer and longer. And well, there's a shitton stuff to do. At Chapter 7 I think it was, you unlocked the ability to go to other planets and start doing sidequests and optional bosses and shit.

me, i would be, like, holding the block button and creeping toward enemies, who would just keep backing away from me, and the wheels of my head would be GRINDING and i would wish for something to die.

Tim, you can't move while you're blocking. At least, in my experience you can't. I can't imagine that not being the case in the original version.

Also, guns.

Anyway, at this point combat is fucking trivial. I got supernova way too early and already have the last 4th best sword in the game. I'm at the end of Chapter 8 (quite a while to go apparently) and every battle, including what is supposed to be some of the toughest in the game takes less than 1 minute.

I didn't even try to make it like this. It just happened. I happened to fuse all the right things at all the right times and blow through every possible decent thing on Jaster's revelation chart. Even the "harder" quarries for my level (40-45) are a damned joke. The pirate ship better be fucking HARD.

Ironically, I wasn't trying to antagonize you, I was hoping I was doing something wrong :( :(.

I gotta tell you, you'll know when it hits, but holy fuck does this game turn up the kickass factor. It reminds me of the stuff Square would make if they didn't start licking balls back on the Playstation. Just a fantastic games. If the dungeons were each an hour shorter, it would be one of the best 5 RPGs I've ever played. GodDAMN are there some good story pieces. The end better not let me down.

aerisdead, you're wrong.

The story isn't terrible.

No one sticks with it long enough to see it start kicking ass though.

If I got paid to review shit, you can be damn sure I'd play through the whole thing.

Too bad they very obviously don't. And by "they" I mean, nearly all of them.

I've actually managed to beat a number of super long games before review provided I get them at least a week early.

I traded my Rogue Galaxy last night to a friend for Bully. I am very happy.

See, I thought Bully was bad plot and dialogue and it was exactly the type of game I'd been looking forward to. So, eh...

As I said in the journalist confession thread in the axe...

Some games aren't worth beating.

I should add, most games aren't worth talking about.

But really Aeris, it depends on the game. Having faith in Level 5 was worth it this time.

I've got a couple more days to finish Monster Kingdom before I get something out. Unfortunately, the PSP is so boring to play games on that I don't know if I'll be able to do it, even though I actually like the game a good deal.

Finished it, time on clock was like 40:01.

While it peaked about 5-7 hours before the end, it was a pretty damn fulfilling game.

Dungeons still needed to be about 20% shorter.

I wanted to ask, do you ever get a faster way to move around? Because walking through loads of nothingness, especially in a town, is really annoying. The teleporters mitigate this somewhat, but not entirely. Dark Cloud 2 had a similar problem, but it also gave you the Ride Pod, eliminating said problem.

They mitigate the problem completely if you don't miss any the first time through.
