Which is exactly why I've been looking forward to it for over a year. I'm buying it once I finish Bully. |

Sheesh, you people don't have to be such assholes.
A desinger who inserts upskirt pictures of fictional little girls isn't necessarily sexually attracted to them. What if (s)he finds them cute? |
well, everyone knows that in Japan the word "upskirt" means "moe", which means "loli", which means "jailbait", which means "I live to feel pre-pubescent girls' hymens rip and bleed under the onslaught of my 40-year-old cock while they scream 'NO DADDY NO!'" which means "ecchi", which means "hentai", which means "ibuprofen" which means "SD" which means "perfectly innocent depictions of little girls and you're worse than Hitler if you think even for a moment that our intentions were anything other than the purest of pure", so I don't really see what the big deal is. _________________

I finally played a couple hours of this last night. Although I like it over all, I have two really big problems with it right off the bat:
1. Throwing those two "Giants" at you right at the beginning of the game, and right after taking away your babysitter. Way to totally fuck up the difficulty curve, guys.
2. Although the voice-acting is pretty good, the cut-scenes and dialogue are literally the most inane I've EVER heard in a video game.
"Look, Jaster! It's a toothbrush!"
"tooth... brush..."
"You can use it to clean your teeth if they get dirty!"
"Well, my teeth ARE kind of dirty!"
"Really? Wow! Maybe you could find something to clean them!"
"What about that thing we just found?"
"You mean that toothbrush?"
"Yeah! Do you think that might work?"
"You mean, to clean your teeth?"
"Yes, maybe I could use the toothbrush to clean my teeth, which are dirty."
"Well, I guess you can give it a try!"
I'm already REALLY looking forward to the point at which the game opens up and stops being so plot-heavy, because so far the plot is terrible. I'm ALMOST to the point of skipping all of the cutscenes, because so far they have detracted from the game rather than contributing to it.
On the upside, I like the maturation of Dark Cloud 2's combat system, and I like the ability grid, although I'm afraid I won't be able to play golf or go fishing in dungeons after I've beaten them. _________________

| I'm guessing you're referring to the power glove scene? The reason it did that is because you got the glove before you came to the monument. If you went to the monument first, they'd have said "I guess we need something to get by here" and turned around. Since you got the glove first, they played the first and second sequences together. Which makes things sound ridiculous. |
That was what I was referencing directly, but there have been many other very similar cutscenes (like the TOTALLY pointless flashback Jaster has when he first gets on the ship).
Actually, I HAD gone to the monument first. When I got the glove, the girl whose name I've forgotten because I just call her "Tits McGee" said "Hey! Maybe we can use this glove to move that giant statue!", which made it even more retarded that it played through the whole toothbrush-like dialogue when I went back to the monument. _________________

| That said, luvcraft, they throw those dudes at you in the first level because the game is kinda challenging! It seems like I get my ass handed to me at the beginning of every new area, until I find/synthesize some better weapons and/or figure out better ways to kill groups of enemies. |
Challenging is OK, but when one of the first level mid-boss is tougher than the first level end-boss, and there are TWO of them simultaneously, somebody in level design forgot their idiot pills that morning. Just one of those Giants would've been plenty-o-challenge for your first fight without the babysitter. I died four or five times on that fight, which is NOT something you want to happen less than ten minutes into your game (see also God Hand). Since that fight the only time I've died was on the first mimic in the jungle, and that was just because I was being really really lazy.
My guess is that it originally WAS just one of them, but then either one of their veteran playtesters beat him too easily, or a playtester who was new to the game got lucky and beat him too easily, and they decided to just throw in a second Giant at a point where it was too late to get a good playtesting of that section again and they shouldn't have been making such changes.
But again, with the exception of that one scene, the balance and challenge has been great, and the gameplay has been very enjoyable.
As I play this game, I keep finding myself wondering what True Fantasy Live Online was going to be like. _________________

| Does this game say "Boy, have I got some item collecting and synthesizing bullshit for you! Are you ready to waste some serious time?" like Dark Cloud 2 does? Or is it, you know, a game you can play and have fun with? |
Anyone who did not purchase it explicitly for the item collecting and synthesizing bullshit was ill-informed.
At this point I'm actually kinda worried it won't have ENOUGH item collecting and synthesizing bullshit like Dark Cloud 2 did. _________________

You mean the final products of all the weapon synthesis? I preferred bludgeoning enemies to death with a giant frozen tuna, myself. _________________

I'm pretty sure one of the final guns was still a machine gun. And you could have branched over to one of the less goofy-looking swords, too. _________________

Alrighty, I've come to the conclusion that this isn't the game for me. I'm at the end of the Vedan mine, and I still have not had a single moment of fun; the entire game feels like work, and the cutscenes are so inane that I've skipped almost all of them (which hasn't detracted at all from my knowing exactly what's going on. Keep that in mind on your next game, Level 5). Yes, there ARE a million different things to do, but they're all BORING, and also require trudging through gigantic empty dungeons and hoping that a random battle will randomly drop the random thing you need to do whatever. And the whole "explore alien planets!" thing is bullshit when every "alien planet" is actually just a large, empty dungeon with random monster encounters and nothing to actually "explore".
If Circuit City won't take this game back I'll be selling it here for $30. _________________

| I don't particularly like it either, but for some reason I keep playing it and I can see myself possibly even playing it through to completion. |
I kind of know what you mean. Night before last, I said "enough of this shit", put it back in the case, found the receipt, and put it next to the door to try to return it the next day. The next day I thought "well, maybe I'll give it another try", spent the whole day playing it and not having fun (I was home sick) and ended up again saying "enough of this shit", putting it back in the case next to the door with the receipt so this evening I can try to return it.
So on the one hand this is the only game that I've ever decided to return and then decided to give one more try, but on the other hand after giving it that "one more try" I was even MORE convinced that I wanted to return it.
I haven't done so well on buying games so far this year. The two games I borrowed from other people (Okami and Bully) I've loved, whereas all three of the four games I've bought that I've played so far (God Hand, Elite Beat Agents, and Rogue Galaxy) I've hated. Now I'm kind of afraid to play Disgaea 2, which is the fourth game I've bought this year but have not yet played, because although I'm SURE I'll love it given my love of the first Disgaea, so far my buying-games-luck hasn't turned out so well this year. _________________

You're a terrible human being. How do you live with yourself? How can you hate the Game of the Year 2006? You might as well just quit gaming now. |
Yes yes, I'm a blight on humanity, we've already had this discussion in the God Hand thread. _________________

back to the topic at hand, if you think you might like Rogue Galaxy more than I did, then you're welcome to it. (mention the secret code "GODHANDSUXROFL!!" for free shipping!) _________________

That's kind of what I say in my review!
You can't expect a reviewer to play a 40+ hour game all the way through!
That would be insane!
I still enjoyed it though! |
You also can't expect anyone other than the most hardcore/bored players to wade through 30 hours of absolutely horrible plot and dialogue and then reward them at the end of it with good plot and dialogue.
I traded my Rogue Galaxy last night to a friend for Bully. I am very happy. _________________

I would still disagree with this. Several times I have tried to explore areas of a dungeon or town that didn't seem like it had a giant sign saying "Go This Way" and was rewarded by a teleporter. Only it was several feet beyond where I was allowed to go. So, basically I had to wait until the story finally said, "Ok, I guess you can go there now" and I had to make the long walk again.
Which is another minor annoyance I find in the dungeons. There are multiple paths, so I feel I should explore so I don't miss anything. And then the game makes them mandatory paths later anyways. I know that as soon as I get used to this and just stop trying to explore I'm going to miss out on something I would have liked to get.
Furthermore, the environments are usually so big that even walking between the nearest teleporter and your next objective just feels so slow. I'd have preferred a more compact game world with higher encounter rates. It would have sacrificed the expansive feel of the game, but it wouldn't have drawn attention to the fact that there is nothing to fill that expanse. Of course, what I'd prefer would be something like the Ride Pod of Dark Cloud 2. |
I agree with all of this entirely, and it's a big part of why I gave up on RG and got rid of it, but stuck with DC2 all the way to the end and still own it and recommend it to friends. _________________
