1UP plagerises Brandon Sheffield, and me! (TOSE)

Jesus H Christ on stick. People on the internet stealing work from people on the internet who stole work from other people on the internet.

I copied Brandon Sheffield's article on TOSE from Gamasutra:

And I wrote this:

And then Sam Kennedy stole MY idea and wrote this:

Which is practically the same article, and hell, even the final paragraph is like, almost identical.

Now, before anyone accuses me of stealing Mr Sheffield's article idea, I linked DIRECTLY to it, encouraging people to read it. So at least I made reference to it.

Does anyone know Sam's email? I feel I should contact him.

But mainly... It's my last day at my current employer, and there's not much work to do, and I thought I'd post on SB.

What are your thoughts people on internet theft?

Wagner James Au stole an article near blatantly from me and an idea I'd posted in my forums for some shit he did at Kotaku (i think). It was shortly after E3 last year. I started a thread on IC about it. You know what the end result is? Don't be a pussy and suck it up. It's hard to prove anything is stolen on the internet and really, do you care? Or rather, do you care because the article on 1up is getting more exposure than yours and Sheffields will? That's why I was pissed. It's tough to be original and not be big time. It just takes a few pen strokes and the other author goes down as the guy who wrote that shit (at least to the mass market).

You could do what I do these days and just stop giving a shit. Or you could apply to write for 1up (something I'm not particularly fond of doing).

Brandon apparently e-mailed that dude. I don't know if he got a response. However, if you can personally prove specific cases of plagiarism you've got a stronger case than Brandon, who was probably only interested in getting a linkback/credit. I also wrote about Tose, funnily enough; but for a column in a Danish magazine where I guessed most folks don't read Gamasutra, so I considered it a public service (and I mentioned Gamasutra, to my memory.) _________________ "Did you read that mr. ignorant new games journalist? I told my fiancee about Tose the other day, and I didn't even mention Brandon. She must have thought I did all the research. This is kind of funny though, I mean do mainstream videogame journalists actually do "research" for anything that doesn't involve, at most, cruising the internet? How are they suppossed to know, when they stumble across an original idea of piece of content, that they aren't supposed to just copy and paste it like they do for hundreds of press releases each year? I mean blaming 1-Up is like blaming a puppy for shitting on the floor, its just in its nature. Btw, nice to see your back Szczepaniak.

Precisely, he didn't even link to Brandon's article, which had a lot of dialogue from the people themselves. As for the whole games journos people not doing research, I'd like to think I bucked that trend. I spent a year tracking down the guy who made the CDi Zelda games to interview him, spent a year browsing assembler's forum building up info to document the community, and pestered the hell out of everyone at ROMhacking.net to write about the rom translation scene. In truth it all involved the net, emails, fax and phone calls, but it took some work to go from one bit of info to another. I literally had to wafe through about 20 full interviews for the two scene articles, and for each I had to deal with about... ohhhh.... 10'000 words of answers total? Then again, covering community scenes is a lot different to previewing a game or something. I think people actually misunderstand just how much work goes into a mag.

i was looking through the manual to FF chronicles the other day and it said TOSE Ltd. right in the credits. tose isnt that big of a secret,its hidden in plain sight. _________________

I dunno if it means anything now the thread is more or less derailed, but 1up steals a LOT of stuff. They copied a picture made by a friend of mine and after he plagued them about it they simply changed it. It's not the first time I've heard of them doing it, and I doubt it'll be the last. I refuse to visit the site at all. Fuck 'em. _________________

If you listen to the 1up yours podacast or the 1up show videocast you'll see them name drop IC and Sheffield like every damn week now. Personally I don't mind the site for the most part. There are a lot of editors there who I actually read before they were legitimate game journos...or people I remeber reading in the pages of EGM circa the mid to late 90's.
