Same thing goes for musicians. Ever heard of Elvis? Also, a NEW VIDEOGAME INTERNETS JOURNALIST isn't an artist. I think. |
|
|
|
| Brandon apparently e-mailed that dude. I don't know if he got a response.
However, if you can personally prove specific cases of plagiarism you've got a stronger case than Brandon, who was probably only interested in getting a linkback/credit. I also wrote about Tose, funnily enough; but for a column in a Danish magazine where I guessed most folks don't read Gamasutra, so I considered it a public service (and I mentioned Gamasutra, to my memory.) _________________ "Did you read that mr. ignorant new games journalist? | I told my fiancee about Tose the other day, and I didn't even mention Brandon. She must have thought I did all the research.
This is kind of funny though, I mean do mainstream videogame journalists actually do "research" for anything that doesn't involve, at most, cruising the internet? How are they suppossed to know, when they stumble across an original idea of piece of content, that they aren't supposed to just copy and paste it like they do for hundreds of press releases each year? I mean blaming 1-Up is like blaming a puppy for shitting on the floor, its just in its nature. Btw, nice to see your back Szczepaniak. |

|
|
| Precisely, he didn't even link to Brandon's article, which had a lot of dialogue from the people themselves.
As for the whole games journos people not doing research, I'd like to think I bucked that trend. I spent a year tracking down the guy who made the CDi Zelda games to interview him, spent a year browsing assembler's forum building up info to document the community, and pestered the hell out of everyone at ROMhacking.net to write about the rom translation scene. In truth it all involved the net, emails, fax and phone calls, but it took some work to go from one bit of info to another. I literally had to wafe through about 20 full interviews for the two scene articles, and for each I had to deal with about... ohhhh.... 10'000 words of answers total? Then again, covering community scenes is a lot different to previewing a game or something. I think people actually misunderstand just how much work goes into a mag. |

So is this anecdote false?

| I guess so. But, so what? It's not like we burned his house down in rage. We're just doing what internet people do: bitch about things.
I am 100% certain though that he was influenced by other TOSE articles. There's too much of a co-incidence here. |

man here i was going to post "in before someone points out the inherent irony or sczepaniak complaining that another journalist didn't do his own research" but I guess I was too late. and fwiw I think a linkback would be appropriate given that brandon did break this story several months ago and it was all over the blogosphere, but I don't think it counts as plagiarism. _________________ ![]() |

Um... so what. That's just journalism. If the article is actually lifting exact wording, that's plagarism. Making a me-too article isn't plagarism, even if it isn't horribly original or creative. The local news does it, women's magazines do it, sports newspaper columnists do it. Tis reality. Even the games we discuss are mostly retreads of stuff someone else made and proved itself as intersting/worthwhile/etc. There aren't very many original ideas in any media, and when one does show up it's sure to be copied. Movies, games, books, articles, songs... Take it as a compliment that your article (or the article by the person who YOU got your "inspiration" from) was good enough that someone thought it was worth doing again. Now, I'll change my tune if I see exact wording repeatedly copied, or with very minor changes (i.e. substitute one adjective for another repeatedly). |

|
| Hey stretchpanic-san, does this mean you're going to (finally) retroactively credit fort90 for that mega drive stuff he helped you out with?
You're got incredible nerve, man. I might start to pick up Retro Gamer now it's not all going to be summarized forum threads that I've already read. |

|
| Sorry to be so random but do you have a brother at Imperial? | |
|
|
| Oh man, the biggest irony of all this is that TOSE got broken to the internet before brandon's peice: http://gamasutra.com/features/20060420/cifaldi_01.shtml

| I dunno if it means anything now the thread is more or less derailed, but 1up steals a LOT of stuff. They copied a picture made by a friend of mine and after he plagued them about it they simply changed it.
It's not the first time I've heard of them doing it, and I doubt it'll be the last. I refuse to visit the site at all. Fuck 'em. _________________ |

| Remember when they just copied that DOA fansite's strategy guide and posted it as their own from their so called "fighting game" master?
1up blows phat cocks. This is without even going into their piss poor previews/reviews. _________________ ![]() |

Personally I don't mind the site for the most part. There are a lot of editors there who I actually read before they were legitimate game journos...or people I remeber reading in the pages of EGM circa the mid to late 90's. Last edited by newave on Thu Feb 01, 2007 7:50 am; edited 1 time in total |

I forget their defense for that DOA guide, but I remember it being fairly weak. Anyway, the small (and unimportant in the big picture) game's site I write for did a piece blasting 1up for some things, and if the webmaster wasn't lying to me, then Sam actually found it and trolled us in the comments section. So I'm not overly surprised about this by now. |

I'm going to write a final fantasy article for a website and have it published before your one and then i will accuse you of copying me and expose you for the fraud you are |
