Aye. Was sortakinda hoping they weren't going to turn into this, but hey, Ziff Davis LOL etc. There's still some good shit on there, but it's almost entirely user-submitted, which is laaaame.
And yes I had a page on there for like two years. Shut up. _________________

| What's ironic is EGM and 1-Up have historically been the first to toot their own horn about how much integrity as journalists they have, yet threads condemning them as hacks (such as this one) appear every five minutes on the internet. |

| Hey stretchpanic-san, does this mean you're going to (finally) retroactively credit fort90 for that mega drive stuff he helped you out with? |
That was an honest mistake. I interviewed him and then the article was delayed for a month, meaning I forgot to add him to the contributors list. We spoke, I apologised, and we were cool. Who made you his attorney all of a sudden where you need to jump down my throat? If Fort has a problem, he can say it straight to me, and I'll try to make ammends.
I didn't do it intentionally. I credited the Sega-16 website, and Katz from Sega, what reason would there be to leave out Fort90 intentionally? Hell, ask NFG, I credited him and his website when he helped me ages ago for an importing article, and then later still when he provided info on something, I forget what. I think he even made a post on his blog about being credited.
Try speaking to other people James, to get the full picture, you'll see I'm an ethical person who always credits those who help me - except on the odd occassion when I forgot.
Have you read the last 3 issues? I praise and provide links to Insert Credit in ALL of them.

| You're got incredible nerve, man. I might start to pick up Retro Gamer now it's not all going to be summarized forum threads that I've already read. |
Your venom towards me is frightening, James. When games journos recycle the company line from developers, that's being lazy and not doing research. When someone interviews people and asks questions on forums, openly stating it's for an article, in order to get a feel for the scene, or what's happening at ground level, that's also bad, because you think it means the person is just using other people to get info.
Grow up. There is nothing wrong with speaking to gaming communities in order to get a feel for the scene, or speaking to experts on a forum in order to write about some specialist information.
That is what I call research.
How do you think people in the real world should write articles? I suppose it would best if I didn't speak to companies or read their press releases, and I didn't speak to people on forums either. So what you're saying is, the best journalism is when people live in a bubble and make things up?
I think you misunderstand me and my intentions entirely. And you seem to be one of only a few people who have a problem with my work. You live in the UK, right? Maybe we should meet and speak face to face, since forums are incredibly limiting. You'd find that I'm just one hard working guy, trying to write things a bit differently, and make my work interesting. Why that offends you so badly, I do not know. Dozens of people have been happy to help me, in exchange for their names being credited in the mag: JunkerHQ, Panzer Dragoon forums, people on the old Insert Credit, the guy who runs canned dogs, that doujin site, ROMhacking.net, even Frank Cifaldi was happy for me to quote him in a news piece I did on unreleased games. Most people are incredibly eager to provide screens and info, because they value the coverage given.
I was also going to interview Derek Yu on TIGSource, regarding the world of indie games, for a feature which covered the site. Not that it will happen now, since I left the industry. I guess you'd have been annoyed with that too huh? Because by speaking to him, I'm essentially stealing his words and getting him to do my work?
You'd be surprised how the real world of journalism works. Where is dhex when you need him?
Anyway, what exactly is the problem you have with me, James? Try and explain it in polite terms, since I honestly don't feel like this turning into a flame war. |

Skretch Panik, my issue is more that while other people come to forums to talk and share ideas freely you seem to be hovering over it all with a notebook. This is borne out in your skeezy attitude to roms and watermarking of images.
(Anyway, your stuff for Retro Gamer often seemed like a book report on the internet sites you visited or just a bunch of arse-kissing) |

Not saying they are/aren't hacks, but... threads on the internet aren't exactly conclusive proof. Some of it might just be bitter jealousy. And integrity in journalism doesn't necessarily mean 100% original articles. As long as they aren't actually plagarizing by actually copying text, it's pretty standard for the world of journalism. In a way, it's arguably good journalism for a mainstream site to pick up on these trends in the indie scene and repackage them to present the interesting story to a much larger audience. |

Joe does not understand the concept of love (nor dramatic irony)
If you can prove Sketchpanik isn't a sycophant who supports rom hoarding and huge watermarks on images I will quit this board and never come back |

Dude, that's the thing. No one but you really cares about this, and your one-man crusade against the dude is pretty damn annoying. Well, that, and your one-man crusade against like 5 other people on these forums that you insist on dragging into every thread they post in. I mean, I don't really like the guy either, but I'm not going to go out of my way to make him feel unwelcome to post on some forums that I don't operate or pay for.
It's starting to feel like Insert Credit again, with all the teeming, open hostility, and I'm not sure that's something I want to be part of. I got sick of the IC forums when it turned into petty sniping (instead of just being in jest, like any "trolling" should be here) that ruined every other thread.
That said, I don't run these forums so I guess I don't have any business telling you how to act. I'm just throwing my two cents in. Carry on with your e-crusade. |

I make a few comments now or again whenever he pops up like a scurrying whack-a-mole which are usually just one-liners and reflect what I imagine a few people think but can't be arsed to say. I am the man who can be arsed. I was even kind to him the first few times he almost got laughed off the Lost Levels boards! That's verifiable!
As for the insert credit stuff - yeah, great, whatever. You were still responsible for a hell of a lot of the shit that went down there, back in the day. The fact you're kind of inane didn't help, and I don't think it's helping right now.
Can you please get over your spurned crush on me, Joe? I'm getting a little bored of it. |

This is the difference between you and everyone else here that makes the place interesting / enjoyable : if you think something divisive, negative, or shitty, you just go ahead and post it! Congratulations, you have no control over what you write and a willingness to hit the "Submit" button where most of us would realize it wasn't worth it and give up whatever clever snipe we wrote.
You're not providing a public service by being an internet vigilante. All you're doing is shitting in the pool, which makes it nasty for everyone because then there's shit everywhere. And how do you even know you're right about this whole controversy you've just unearthed? Better yet, how does anyone else who doesn't already agree with you know you're right? You didn't really give any specifics or cite evidence, you just acted mad.
In summary, being angry on the internet isn't something they give metals for and I think I'd enjoy your posts more if you tried to avoid it instead of considering it a virtue.
Also: I request that James be given the custom title "the man who can be arsed," but not to be mean just because it would be funny and he'd probably think so too. |

Didnt Mr. Luke Smith write a big article on IGN stealing his articles and reposting them? _________________
