Yeah, I definitely enjoyed this more than Mother 3. I mean, Mother 3 was great. But I fucking spent 100 hours with this game and as soon as I finished I immediately wanted to start a new game. I don't feel like replaying Mother 3 at all. _________________

| The Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games could probably stand to learn a few lessons from how P4 handles relationships between characters and each other/the player. One of those with character interaction like P4's would be a really nice game. |

Yeah, that's true. It'd be nice if courting the girls were more like the s links in this game instead of just giving them shit to make their hearts slowly change color. _________________

Guys,
You know that awesomely spiffy running outline thing at the title screen? It's rare, but if you cancel out of it and go back, other party members' silhouettes. It entertained me for minutes! |

Yeah, I found that out yesterday! I did it until I saw everyone's silhouette. Teddie's is the most obvious. Also, their jacket bottoms are so huge - they look like dresses.
Also, guys if this game had no battles, it'd just be a dating sim. Which wouldn't be bad at all, really. In visual novels and such the scenario is what determines whether the game is king or failure, the problem being that most of those games have shit pandering stories with fetishistic characters that appeal to the worst.
P4 is the best, meanwhile. _________________

| If dating sims handled your relationships with characters the way P4 does they'd be be a lot more worthwhile, and I say this as a guy who has played (and enjoyed) a few of those. |

A few months ago, I played my first Harvest Moon game. I enjoyed its relationship mechanic, but it wasn't as deep as I wanted, and it made me thirst for more robust dating sims. Then Persona 3 came along and gave me what I was looking for. Though I fear once Persona 4 is through, I'll be out of good options again.
The only other really good dating sim I've played is the eroge True Love. So I'm interested in any other possible recs.
Hopefully, the influence of the Persona series splashes onto other games and we'll see more well-written, individual-driven relationship mechanics as we go forward. |

If you enjoy the number crunching true "dating-sim" style games of old, you'd enjoy games like Princess Maker or Monster Rancher if you can find them. If you like relationship building, everyone-knows-each-other games, then well...
I'm no expert on this thing, but I really dug the Type Moon games like Tsukihime and Fate. Well, I liked Tsukihime a lot more because the characters are more interesting along with the atmosphere, while the scenario is better in Fate but I didn't really like the characters that much. Also, I got into the whole series anyway from playing Melty Blood a lot and then wondering who these cool characters were.
Anyway, the neat thing about Tsukihime is that each character has a definite path that branches off from each other, but they all build on each other at the same time. Like if you clear one girl and then try to enter another girl's story arch, some of the characters will never appear and yet you'll know exactly what they're doing within the background context of the story because you've played through their events. It sort of ends up that you'll have this gestalt understanding of all the characters and how they would have played out if it wasn't a parallel universe for each branch that you go on, and you can see the repercussions of going one way versus another while getting to know each character individually and it makes it really deeply enjoyable.
The writing is pretty irritating at times but if you can slog through it, the characters are really likeable and the endings are pretty satisfying. If anything, Nasu, the writer, is good at keeping the fans satisfied with his stories because of the likeable characters, the fighting, and the endings that happen. This is more than I can say about most visual novels that I've played where the characters are just these real voids of personality that are just obviously pandering and the scenarios are just pasted together stereotypes of idealistic worlds that don't really have any kind of arch or ending that feels you deserved it.
So, in conclusion, if you're up for trying it out, I can link you to the only file you'll need besides the installer that you can get from Mirror Moon. Tsukihime was originally a doujin game so the art and music are ass ugly and amateurish but it really kinda grows on you towards the end.
Also, if you play you must make a liveplay thread like mine so I can comment back. _________________

I'd imagine it's as common amongst gamers there as an RTS would be for us here. They're featured in game magazines and things for ages now and have their own magazines devoted just to their genre.
But to the public? I imagine they'd just clump them all together as anime games or something.
Also, Gloss:
The game runs fine on Parallels so I'd imagine it'd work on VMware. Try it and let's play some vampire hunting with women games. _________________

I loved Princess Maker 2 back in the day, though I never finished any of the files I started. Should complete a game one day. Love stat & time management!
I'd like to play this Tsukihime game. Can you get me the file you mentioned? |

Will download that when I get home from work tonight.
I've decided to Finish Persona 4 tomorrow. By my estimation, I have about fifteen hours left (and will play about three tonight). |

Pad it out so that you won't feel really sad when you're done and you can't hang out with your Inaba buddies anymore. ;____; _________________

My plan could change depending on what happens next, but I think I might be even closer to the end than I thought I was.
Will miss my Inaba buddies very much. But soon after completing P4, I'm kinda going to be hanging out with my Iwatodai buddies in "The Answer."
I probably shouldn't plan on replaying two 80+ hour games in the same year I completed them, but I'm kinda thinking I'm gonna replay both P3 and P4 by year's end. |

hoooooh man
You should reschedule that, because once you're done with The Answer, you won't be wanting to play any games much less a Persona game for a while. Shit is tough. And boring. Until you clear all the floors anyway and actually get to the real story.
Actually, I would suggest you seek out the older Persona games, like Persona 2 Eternal Punishment or the recently translated P2: Innocent Sin just to see how different the games are. The older games are a lot more moody and atmospheric ala the traditional SMT games and are enjoyable in their own right too. Also they're stylish as hell in their own ways. _________________

I played around with P2 a bit some time before P3 was released, and it definitely is stylish. I sort of wish Kazuma Kaneko (?) would do another Persona game; his style seems vaguely reminiscent of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure mangaka's to me. Whom I highly enjoy.
The game itself just sort of confused me, though. Oh well.
I picked up a copy of FES the other day and am going to start it once I finish P4 (saved before the final boss right now). I wasn't planning on doing this, having played vanilla P3, but I watched the intro to Episode Aegis on Youtube and couldn't help myself. I needs me some more moé android girls. |

Just do it. It's just 1 more dungeon and boss. If you've already come this far what's so hard about that?
Plus you want to do it to prepare for your NG+. You can finally make some high end persona like Lucifer and you can go and sell all your items since money transfers over but items don't. _________________

I was actually going to hold off on finishing the game till Sunday or something, but then there was slightly less game than I as expecting. Moving toward the "true" ending now, will finish either tonight or tomorrow night.
Seems to be building toward something good. |

Is anybody going to replay Persona 3 now?
I'm going to play the FES version for the first time since beating the original right after it came out. But i want to get a few other games out of the way first as a palate cleanser.
Shadow of the Colossus is good for that, since it's as different from the Persona games as you could possibly get. Might get Zack & Wiki out of the way too, since that'll probably be short. _________________

| I'd already replayed P3 (Fes version) and played (for the first time) The Answer in anticipation of this game. I'll probably start another playthrough of P4 but peck away at it casually. |

BTW, I finished this game Friday night. Gonna withhold discussion of its ending until Persona finishes it, seeing as this is his thread and all. I guess I could go over to KoP and dish, but... not until I get my thoughts a little more in order.
Meanwhile, I've started Chrono Trigger and Persona 3: The Answer. I didn't use party control in P4, so going back to P3's system hasn't been too major a shock. And, well, four hours in, I'm really enjoying it. |

The events at the end of The Answer make the whole thing worthwhile to me, only I think it could have afforded to be about 15 hours shorter. |
