Catching up on thread. But wanted to add this:

Correct! If you try to hole up in the tower, they start throwing firebombs at you. =(

Is Seperate Ways only on the PS2 version?

Because it's totally fucking awesome. It's basically a series of isolated missions with Ada, that involves a lot of high pressure swarms of enemies and evading cannon fire from the artillery of a docked battleship and stuff. You can't upgrade your weapons either, though you can buy new ones, and your shotgun is basically totally fucking useless by the end. It's just way more fun than the normal game was by the end though. It's also the reason why the blacktail and semi-auto rifle are now my favorite weapons.

I bought this game the day it came out on the Gamecube, and to be honest, I could never bring myself to beat it. I never really got too into it.

The village was fun enough, but I just wasn't feeling the castle. By the time I found out that I was expected to traverse a HEDGE MAZE, I had had it with the game. Open door, see hedge maze, turn off game.

So now I see everyone talking about how awesome it is, and how even MORE awesome the Mercenaries game is, and all this. I decide to give it another try. I have just come to the hedge maze again. Now, I've heard time and time again, people tell me "man, the hedge maze isn't so bad". It's hard -- almost impossible, at times -- to explain to them that it's not that I think it's DIFFICULT, but that I disagree with the hedge maze on a fundamental level.

Tell me, guys. I haven't actually tried the thing, but will I be disgusted if I actually try to get through the hedge maze? How can I survive this thing?

I don't understand. What's wrong with the Hedge maze? It's got zombie dogs, so you might consider that a plus. And it's not a particularly complicated or long hedge maze.

Like I said, I disagree with the idea of a hedgemaze in an otherwise streamlined game on the most fundamental level. The game has, in my eyes, jumped the shark at this point.

Oh, see, I didn't understand what you meant when you said that it was fundamentally against the nature of the game.

Honestly, if you don't like sharks being jumped, you should probably stop right now. I believe this topic has already addressed the fire breathing stone dragons and the mechanical Salazar, so yeah, it jumps the shark a few more times before the end.

Although you may want to fight through the pain just to get to Mercenaries. That sounds like more your cup of tea. Just you, an environment, a bunch of zombies, and minibosses every 5 minutes. Though you might think that the Double Donger is jumping the shark. Or Krauser, Hunk, and Wesker.

It's not very videogamey at all, or even very confusing. You can take multiple routes through it and the whole thing is over in 5 minutes, and the hedge maze only exists so they can ZOMGSPOILER scare you with zombie dogs jumping over the bushes.

The castle part is really weird and videogamey overall, and if think that part's bad, well... it only gets sillier!

2nd playthrough after taking about 2 months really wanting this game and finally getting hold of the pal version in nice non-smashed condition.
fucking awesome, just killed the centipede chap and going into the castle.
Not hoarding my weapons this time, fucked off the pistol and punisher and got the red 9 also just swapped shotgun for the riot gun.

First time I was very careful and I don't think I ever got the riot gun.

The Gamecube version has Assignment Ada, unlocked after you beat the game.

Assignment Ada is only on the island base. It starts where Leon starts the island, and covers some of the same areas. It ends I think on the walkway to the communications tower?

From what I remember, she has a Punisher (weaker handgun but with penetrating shots), the TMP, and the semi-auto rifle? Weapons are only slightly improved from stock and with minimal ammo. No knife and weak situational attacks round out a difficult start, forcing you to avoid more than fight, but by the end you'll have more ammo that you can reasonably expend.

Anything else is PS2-exclusive. Capcom's main PS2 enhancement was supposedly to add more Ada missions, though I've never seen a decent description of just how much was added.

Seperate Ways is the PS2 exclusive that Ging mentioned...unless you're stating that their post wasn't a decent description of what it was, then nevermind.

I like how Seperate Ways totally expands the plot in the most completely meaningless ways. By which I mean a lot of allusions and no real improvements.

Seperate Ways has 5 very well balanced missions. You feel fucking badass too. You start out with a pump action shotgun and a blacktail, and you can buy a TMP, SAR, and Bowgun that fires explosive arrows. These weapons are not upgradable. The whole thing has you blasting your way through rather well placed enemies and the whole thing has a balance that you just never got in any of the other modes.

It's really fun compared to the normal game, and seems a bit harder, but not quite as hard as pro.

Ada runs really fast and has a knife too.

Seems kind of weird, when Assignment Ada was about going from powerhouse Leon to underpowered Ada. (And I can see no way that it wasn't. The difference is just that great.) Guess it shows Capcom decided to further push the "bad-ass death machine" appeal of the game with the PS2 version.

Bowgun? Krauser's bow, or a new weapon?

Naw, some people just make certain spelling mistakes without knowing it.
