Ohohoo! I played this game for the whole weekend and finished it on Monday. It was soooooooo good. I'm still getting shivers of awesome on how awesomeAWESOME everything was in that game.

One of my favourite moments was early on in the game, when you enter the village for the first time. If you follow a little path on the left, then you could sneak into the village without running into anyone, but eventually it is made clear that the only way to progress is to engage the zombies. So I tried to go with an easier-to-manage 1-on-1 tactic (completely forgetting that the Ganados can yell and call for backup) and approached an older lady with an axe, who was closer than the other Ganados. I figured that, since she has an axe, her attack speed is slower than both my gun and my knife. Trying to spare ammo, I decided to engage her only with my knife and started my approach on her. If I could get the first hit then I'll probably manage to get her in the hit-recover-hit-cycle until she dies (meaning I hit her repeatedly until she falls since she has only time to recover from each blow and no time to attack).

As we closed in on eachother, she suddenly stopped for a moment and raised her axe. I was like "Oh, arunning attack with a melee weapon. Pff, textbook dumb enemy maneuver," pushed the left shoulder button in and went into my knifing pose. But instead of running at me like every other braindead, melee weapon-swinging AI enemy in every other game I've played, she FUCKING THREW THE AXE AT ME and I was like "HOLY SHIT SHE DID NOT JUST THROW IT AT ME" and got hit in the shoulder.

Realizing that I just hadn't died from getting hit by an axe, I sobered up after the initial moments of surprise, and panic, and went for my gun while she was pulling out another axe from behind her. I shot first, but I missed, as I was still struggling with the aiming system. She threw her second axe and I was still fumbling with my gun, getting the laser pointer near her but still not there. I shot, again, but I still missed her, instead hitting the axe that was flying at me.

Hitting a flying axe with an almost stray bullet. Damn. And all that happening in the span of what, 5 seconds? Awesome in itself and awesomely satisfying.

By the way, how many times did you guys get killed during your first play-through? I got offed around 60 times, mostly during Quick Time Events (was that how they called them?).

The PC version is awesome. Look at this:

Cover the bottom half of the picture and tell me what you see.

That's right, shit, in every sense of the word. The console versions had some moments where it was somewhat difficult to immediately see a clear path ahead, but those were rare, possibly deliberate sections of the woods. This, on the other hand, is porting at it's absolute worst. You can barely make out what kind of environment you're in.

One thing that always bothered me about the Half-Life games: If you put a weapon away for more than about ten seconds it will be fully loaded if you switch back.

... Really? I've played through both HL's (plus addons like Blue Shift) and never noticed that.
