The only problem with RE 4 is that the village is so awesome is makes the castle disappointing. If the castle had been before the village the game would probably have been perfect.

The jump from classic RE to RE 4 is one of the biggest and best in a franchise, though. I'd like to see the GTA series get the Resident Evil 4 treatment - you know, great controls and great gameplay without taking away any of what made the previous games awesome.

This is arguable -- I think the atmosphere and general "scariness" of REmake is far far superior to RE4, in my opinion.

Part of the problem is that you ARE so badass, so you never feel like the zombies are much of a threat.

Iron Maidens, dude. Those things freak the shit out of me every time. Although yeah, the set pieces start loosing their sense of urgency after the long walk in the rain and the cabin defense.

And the hedge maze.

And the right hand..!

yeah, there's definitely some great moments. but it's only temporary. when you aren't at a major setpiece the game is actually rather relaxing.

The Castle did have some nice touches there. At the far end of the Water Room (the giant room with the equally large number of cultists) is a little cubbyhole room. You can run there with Ashley and hole up. Leon seemingly just has to guard the door to ride out the enemies, which is an easy task. Try this, and you'll probably hear Ashley scream. Turn around, and you'll see a couple of cultists in the room. You'll likely get mad that the game just spawns enemies in the otherwise safe room. But it doesn't. They actually drop through trap doors in the ceiling. If you watch, you can see it happen. The room itself is a trick to catch the player. (Mind, once you know of the trick, you can still use the room as a safe house.)

That is exactly how it went for me.

I always stand at the very rear of this room and stand behind the zombies as they drop out of the hole.

God damned this game is ridiculous. It has fucking zombies just dropping out of holes in the ceiling!

Isn't that kind of insane?!?

I wrote an article about how insane that is, you know!

Also: did anyone else snortle-chortle-laugh when Salazar referred to the ganados as "diminutive?" I thought that was a nice little joke from the localization team. Don't know what the Japanese on that was, though.

Actually I think my favorite line is when he says "I will send my right hand to destroy you." and Leon replies: "Your right hand comes off?"

The PC version is awesome. Look at this:

Cover the bottom half of the picture and tell me what you see.

That's right, shit, in every sense of the word. The console versions had some moments where it was somewhat difficult to immediately see a clear path ahead, but those were rare, possibly deliberate sections of the woods. This, on the other hand, is porting at it's absolute worst. You can barely make out what kind of environment you're in.

What are those vertical lines? Is that just a screencap artifact or is that how the game actually looks?

If so... yuck.

Also how could they remove the lighting effects I mean the lighting effects were pretty fucking primitive in that game to began with.

It hasn't been officially released on PC yet, has it?

Maybe they'll fix this before it goes gold?

I thought the release was still few months away...

Ging, the Red9 is actually a Mauser C96.

I always use this as my handgun to the end of the game.

I don't care how much space it takes up! It's still awesome!

Also that Ashley death is fucking awesome.

It is more powerful than the other 9mms.

Once you get the exclusive upgrade, yeah.

Then it's fucking unstoppable!!

One of the things I always liked about the shotgun in Half-Life was that Freeman actually put 8 shells into the thing upon reload, and if you interrupted the reload animation by shooting, you had just as many shells in the shotgun as you put in. I appreciate attention to detail like that.

Yeah, this is the ideal solution to that problem. Would've been nice if RE4 did it, but, ah well.

If you want to do well in RE4, there is one basic trick to the game:

If you always act like you're gonna run out of bullets soon, you will never run out of bullets.

You can ignore this during special sequences and whatnot, but if you're just in a fight with some Ganados, kill them with the minimum number of bullets. Flash grenades, the knife, and the infamous Zombie Suplex are great for this.

headshots and kicks work well too, as well as spamming all of your money into the firepower of your weapons.

The suplex is awesome for conserving ammo though. Using the suplex I can usually take out a single los illuminados with like... two bullets, three at most.

Unless it's a parasite, but is still works really well on them too.

Thread has inspired me to play the game.

Capcom should have been smarter than to put a gigantic wall-sized texture of Raphael's "School of Athens" in the castle. They usually do a good job of sticking to paintings for decoration that aren't used as the highlight pieces of eras of painting in Visual Art 101.

Kills the suspension of disbelief!

Wait where is this?

How have I not noticed this before?

I don't understand. What's wrong with the Hedge maze? It's got zombie dogs, so you might consider that a plus. And it's not a particularly complicated or long hedge maze.

Like I said, I disagree with the idea of a hedgemaze in an otherwise streamlined game on the most fundamental level. The game has, in my eyes, jumped the shark at this point.

It's not very videogamey at all, or even very confusing. You can take multiple routes through it and the whole thing is over in 5 minutes, and the hedge maze only exists so they can ZOMGSPOILER scare you with zombie dogs jumping over the bushes.

The castle part is really weird and videogamey overall, and if think that part's bad, well... it only gets sillier!
