Yeah, I know. The mortgage crisis couldn't have happened without them.
All the more reason for S&P to try to save face, I guess.
I honestly don't know if S&P's competitors were rating those mortgage bundle things poorly, but if they were, I guess you could argue that the world should listen to them instead of S&P. But--y'know--people are going to give credence to whatever rating they see fit. _________________ "Godzilla could be anyone."

Police surrounded a dude hoping to arrest him. The dude shot one of the police, the police shot back.
edit: Oh the police shot themselves, then shot the dude, nevermind. _________________

So wait, a guy shot at police who then shot him. And people are rioting over it? Is there really nothing more going on here? Because if it's really just people in Britain not used to gun violence then that kind of blows my mind.
Then again, if you're going to riot over something it might as well be something like gun violence. Americans only seem to riot when their basketball team loses.
There was a very similar incident that happened a couple months ago not more than 20 or so miles from where I live where a guy got shot and killed by police after a shootout. It made the nightly news but nobody got super upset about it. Even the guy's family was like "yeah we're upset but what was he thinking". I mean I think there's a huge, systemic problem in America with police brutality and etc. but I find it hard to fault any police for shooting back when fired upon. What were the Brits expecting the police to do in that situation? _________________

Two relevant bits i've read so far:
| Quote: |
| 7.35pm: Initial ballistics tests on the bullet that lodged in a police officer's radio when Mark Duggan died on Thursday night show it was a police issue bullet, the Guardian understands. |
| Quote: |
2.44pm: Returning to the reports a girl was involved in an altercation with police – here an eyewitness tells the BBC that a female was "set upon" by police. It was subsequently discovered she was 16, the witness says, which provoked a surge forward in her defence by people at the scene.

That's pretty much true, I mean, I'm not American, but four and especially five and two really hit home to why I hate school.
Throughout my life I get told that I'm crazy and put on different medication and teachers say "school is not a democracy it is a dictatorship" -- and I mean that too, it is entirely fucked up.
God damn, I love learning. I LOVE to learn. But I hate school because it is just fear of the next test. It is just censorship and P.R.I.D.E. -- Perseverance Respect Integrity Diversity Excellence.
Really those just mean "Be a slave to the system and listen to what we tell you."
And fucking Hell, they put you on all this medication and tell you you're fucked in the head and if you do anything wrong and say "Well, man, this is part of it. I'll work harder to avoid it next time." you get shot in the face with the bullshit that it is not an excuse.
Was I trying to "excuse" my actions? Fuck no.
When half the school and its staff are racists and sexists, and I get in trouble for questioning bullshit and asking questions, something is real wrong with the system.
I remember one time I was in the principle's office for calling somebody a bottom-feeding swine with zero intellect after they had been being racist against oriental folks, heterosexist against homosexuals, and sexist against women.
And I got in trouble for this because I was being racist. Apparently I should have been aware that calling him a swine was a "big deal" because he is Muslim. I didn't make that connection, and if it is a big deal I hope it is! I wanted him to be offended, he offended me! But he got off free-of-charge.
Another time, a guy was on his cell-phone talking to somebody about meeting plans. He says, "I'll be there at four o'clock, aight?" and I replied "Oh yeah, see you then, it's going to be good!" and I'm joking, obviously, but he says to his phone-partner something like "Sorry, I gotta beat on some little faggot, talking shit" and he grabs me by the collar and threatens me that he'll come and beat the shit out of me when I go for the bus. He asks me if I think I'm a comedian and I tell him "I think I am THE Comedian, actually," and start talking about the character from Watchmen, as if I am him.
Anyway, a teacher comes out and asks ME what I did to him, and when we're in the office, he doesn't have any punishment put on him, but I almost got suspended for harrassment. I had to sign these police forms too.
It was bogus as hell.
Or when I correct teachers and get kicked out of class for that, like one time a teacher was telling us that cinematography was pretty images of landscapes and I explained to her that the cinematography was the camera position and choices in any film. She got offended. I called my brother's professor (He's in film studies) and asked him and he told me she's an idiot. Later on we were watching The Great Gatsby film and she kept saying it was a Coppola film and it may have had a screenplay by him but the director was Jack Clayton and she would have NONE of it.
Later on I drew a gun on a paper and she thought I was giving her death-threats. And when she said I shouldn't draw that because there are people from war-torn countries in the class, I told her she shouldn't show us The Untouchables were a girl gets blown up by a hidden bomb in the first five minutes of the movie.
She gave me bad marks because I called out other students in my papers, gave me a zero on my summative because I told the class that my group was made up of a genius (me) and imbeciles, and disagreed with their points -- some of which were her own points that she corrected the group on and apparently I did no work for the group whatsoever and deserve a zero.
One time she didn't accept my work because it didn't fit the format, which it did. She wanted us to write on this paper she gave us which had all sorts of corrections and bullshit, so I retyped it without the errors and tried to hand that in and when I get upset and yelled at her she made me leave the class (understandable).
Later on I handed it in again and she said "It still doesn't follow the format", even though I had changed it to her specifications and I was going to get angry but didn't. And she tells me "Now, Sam, don't get upset. There's no need to show emotion, control yourself," which is basically the stupidest thing ever because obviously I am trying to control myself.
She didn't even follow my IEP which I pointed out to her repeatedly but she wouldn't change.
When I made contradictory statements to anything she said she'd tell me "Well, this isn't a democracy, this is a dictatorship" and at one point I printed out a list of dictators throughout history (as well as fiction, with M. Bison and Megatron) and the header was "Ms. M&M's Heroes and Inspirations" and left that on my desk without before exiting the class.
I had another teacher that called me a faggot and would repeatedly ask me if I thought men were attractive and one day brought in a dress which he told me to wear because I am such a faggot.
This is just ridiculord ranting at this point, but yes, the system is totally fucked.
I also got sent to the office for refusing to eat baked goods made by the special class when I had previously seen one of them sneeze in the food. Or when I didn't give one of them a high five because she had visual dirt on her hand.
Apparently this means I absolutely hate those with mental disabilities.
I would rather go into the library and read instead of having to write essays and tests that are regurgitation of exactly what the teacher has told me to write. I refused to do an assignment where we graded a bunch of things on a scale from 1-10 because I found it silly to quantify things so arbitrarily and haphazardly and I instead wrote my reasoning behind the choice not to follow instructions and it was requested that I be checked for mental disorders for not understanding basic instructions.
I'd often point out accidental trick questions instead of answer what they were supposed to mean.
I don't want to say "I'm a fucking genius" but I need to compensate for my grades because if I go by those I'm a fucking idiot. I just feel like I'm the only one who thinks. And fuck I need to conform next year so I can have marks for grade 12 to go to a place I want to go. _________________

wow.. this London thing is really getting out of hand. A lot of opportunistic looting is going on..from 99p stores...budget clothing stores... closed KFC restaurants...
My opinion of my fellow Londoners is at an all time low. |

Saw that hate crime thing via NXS on twitter today. Depressing.
What's with hate crimes and going to mcdonalds?
Not even sure what to think about the London riots. Except that if Glee is canceled perhaps it'll happen here finally?
Also love how much news is devoted to stocks and credit over everything else. |

I havent been following the wisconsin elections as closely as I should. Digby's blog is bringing me up to speed, though:
| Quote: |
| At this point in the evening, two Democratic wins out of six in the recalls and a lot of questions about a third (coming down to the same Republican activist who was suspected of rigging the Supreme Court election last April.)Remember that these were all GOP districts. |
http://digbysblog.blogspot.com/2011/08/wisconsin.html
| Quote: |
| Wisconsin Democratic Party chair Mike Tate following evidence of election tampering in the 8th State Senate District race: "The race to determine control of the Wisconsin Senate has fallen in the hands of the Waukesha County clerk, who has already distinguished herself as incompetent, if not worse. She is once more tampering with the results of a consequential election and in the next hours we will determine our next course of action. For now, Wisconsin should know that a dark cloud hangs over these important results." |
http://downwithtyranny.blogspot.com/
This last issue is especially important to note: Kathy Nickolaus (the waukesha county clerk in question) is if not entirely incompetent a complete scumbag:

Typical local government stuff mostly. Also typical friction between an entire office made of lifelong bureaucrats and the elected/appointed know-nothing that gets rotated in as their boss every however many years. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |
