People who have a "colorblind" perception find the photos non-racist. The study tries to make the photos outrageous enough that they are "objectively" racist but that fails; ultimately the study's conclusions are based on the fact that the studiers have a non-colorblind perception. In other words they already think colorblindness is racist. They happen to be correct, but that doesn't mean there's anything scientific about the study.

I just feel like mentioning this. My mom was in the military hospital last week, so I had to get a visitor's pass to get on the base. While I was getting a pass, one of the private security guards ( because all the actual soldiers are in Iraq) asked me if I'd been to Fiesta this year, a big festival in San Antonio. I said I hadn't. He said, "What? Too brown for you?"

"I uh..what?...what? no." The question really surprised me, and I never really think about things that way, but okay America!

Then today at the Burritos place I saw a bumperstick that said, "FUCK SOCIALISM" and had a peace sign (seperate sticker.)

Verifiable executions, 2009:

China: Unknown (suspected to be in the thousands)
Iran: At least 389
Iraq: At least 120
Saudi Arabia: At least 69
USA: 52

Japan news: They've banned Yakuza, among other things. I hate April Fool's Day.

And the US is closing their base in Okinawa. I continue to hate April Fool's Day.

Aaand "Japan's rank in a World Economic Forum on the equality of sexes was recently lowered from 91 (out of 134) to 101."

AAaaaaaaaaaaaaaa the men's skirt fashion boom.

The Yakuza one is the most amusing.

"The days that this country coddled organized crime members as if we were children with a Hello! Kitty doll are finally over."

Yeah, I realized this the next day. I recently set my RSS reader to sort by reverse dating, and so it didn't even occur to me that I should be vigilant for April 1st. FFffuck meeee etc.

Impressive from a Long Now perspective. Researchers have figured out how to make vaccination patches out of nanomaterials, in such a way that they use about one hundredth the amount of vaccine, obviate the need for multiple vaccinations, are painless, can be self-applied by non-professionals, don't require refrigeration, and whatever else.

This is one of those things that'll help the second and third world a hell of a lot.

We're a few decades too late to help the second world. And speaking of vaccines, PBS recently devoted a Frontline episode to the furor over vaccines. Spoiler: new age liberal moms are insane and believe they should be allowed to endanger everyone in their communities.

http://current.com/shows/vanguard/

I'm not sure how the expose on North Korea will turn out, but given Vanguard's record, I expect it will be pretty good. That said, this was originally slated to be released in 2008 (though I assume it's been revised by now). Supposedly it's about the underground railroad that exists between North Korea and China (which is probably a problematic discussion as it is, since putting an underground railroad in the spotlight makes it considerably less underground), but I'm not sure how much of that will remain vs. other issues vs. the capture of the journalists.

Also, news on Conan O' Brien.

Mh. There practically is no second world anymore. A bunch of developing nations have crazy good medical these days. I think Taiwan has 100% social medicine with an elaborate digital recordskeeping system so all you need is your ID card, etc.

Now this will definitely be helped by the patches, since patients will be exposed to 1/100th the amount of vaccine, and it can be a slow, progressive administration rather than one jab on the spot. Not sure if the patches will allow the thimerosal to be eliminated from the vaccine entirely, but that should be helped as well.

And man the vaccine scares have been goin' longer than we's been alive. http://ringnebula.com/project-censored/1976-1992/1976/1976-story25.htm

Ooh. The DOW just spiked really hard below 10k for a moment. This could get interesting.

Edit: Weird. One random company spiked from $40 a share to 1 penny a share and then back again, in a flash. http://www.google.com/finance?q=acn

Some people are thinking that today's interestingness is due to algorithms going haywire, rather than any particular news. I'm hoping this ain't going to be blamed on hackers or something.

Kim Jong Il and Vladimir Putin are having a summit meeting in Moscow.
During a break, they're bored, and they decide to take a bet to see whose bodyguards are more loyal.

Putin is on the 20th floor and calls on his bodyguard Ivan, opens the window, and says: "Ivan, jump!"

Sobbing, Ivan says: "Mr. President, how can you ask me to do that? I have a wife and child waiting for me at home"

Putin sheds a tear himself, apologises to Ivan, and sends him away.

Next, it's Kim Jong Il's turn. He calls his bodyguard Lee Myung Man and yells: "Lee Myung Man, jump!"

Not hesitating for a split second, Lee Myung Man is just about to jump out the window.

Putin grabs Lee Myung Man to prevent him from jumping and says: "Are you out of your mind? If you jump out this window, you'll die! This is the 20th floor!"

Nevertheless, Lee Myung Man is still struggling, trying to escape Putin's embrace and jump out the window: "Mr. Putin, please let me go! I have a wife and child at home!"

....

No, let me rephrase that.

I thought that even though the Conservatives took the most seats the results of the election was that there was a hung parliament? Meaning basically no one's in control just yet because nobody got a majority*. So technically if that's the case then not much is going to happen, probably, until the other two parties are able to form a coalition and take control that way.

*Or something to that effect. I haven't really been following the election that closely wheeee.

Related to the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico:
This sort of seems like the opposite of what we should be doing.

Related to Wall Street incompetence (why would you be surprised?):
On Capitol Hill, Sens. Ted Kaufman, D-Del., and Mark Warner, D-Va., called for the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to conduct a thorough study of high-frequency trading and other tools that move markets in milliseconds.

"We saw a living, breathing, real-time example today of the potential catastrophe that takes place if we don't have an ability to make sure we adequately use this technology," Warner said late Thursday.

"Right now, there is no way to know what is happening in this marketplace," Kaufman said.

Some irony in that, coming from Congressman, but whatever.

Movie Studios Win Drive to Disable TV Features
May 8 (Bloomberg) -- Movie studios won U.S. permission to disable features on television equipment to prevent copying of films, clearing the way to send first-run films to consumers in their homes.

Temporarily restricting TVs and the set-top boxes used for cable service will “enable a new business model” that wouldn’t develop without such anti-piracy protection, the Federal Communications Commission said yesterday in an order.
My my my, these guys are going to learn some hard lessons.

The funny part is, this isn't the first time they've passed this law and Henry's vetoed it.

If liberal/moderate/progressive Oklahomans voted in local elections in the same numbers that conservatives did he wouldn't have had to veto this crap in the first place. But they only seem content to turn out for state/national elections instead.

This pretty much nails it.

At the minute, both Labour and the Conservatives are posturing for a coalition. A Conservative-Lib Dem coalition would give a majority to the Tories so they can rule unopposed (Though the Lib Dems could end up killing their own support and going back to the 10 MPs they had in the 80s). A Labour-Lib Dem coalition would give them more power and voter reform but still in a minority. They could add a rainbow coalition of the Greens, SDLP and Alliance NI to get close to the 322 they realistically need (Since Sinn Fein refuse to take an oath of loyalty to the crown and do not take their seats) and Plaid Cymru and SNP could realistically dick over the Tories because while they are not fans of Labour, they hate the Tories more.

At the minute, Clegg is talking to the Tories as he said during the election that the winning party should have the chance at forming a government first but if they fall through or the rest of the party says no. He can go to Labour and hash out a deal there. Theres a strong rumour going around from political forums than Mandelson is already offering Clegg Single Transfer Vote, 6 Cabinet seats and Brown steps down as Labour Leader (But remains PM) till a new Labour Leader is elected (Probably one of the Miliband brothers)

There is still a chance Clegg could just go "Fuck, all y'all". Let Cameron get a minority government. Do his cuts and if the cuts fail. Vote no confidence in the government with Labour and sweep in with a Labour/Lib Dem majority in a snap election.

I know right? By that same rational maybe someday those babies will grow up to be murderers who kill good people, or mad scientists who genetically engineer new forms of cancer.

Ahhh, legislating morality. It just never gets old.
