| Oh hey, apparently last night the Cleveland City Council said it is supporting the Occupy Cleveland people, as did the mayor, and so far the cops have been on board as well (from anything I have heard). It makes sense, given the shitty economics this city has been staring down since Kucinich was mayor and the municipality had to declare bankruptcy. |

| Still wondering when anyone who wants to cut the deficit is going to bother talking about the military... |

While I definitely agree that we don't need to go shooting 100 million worth in missiles at foreign problems and we don't need to spend on R&D for new shit, generally speaking, the military would not be one of the first places I'd go cutting money. |
Wait, hold on a second here.

| Why? Well its not very big, relative to other programs. and secondly, any cuts will surely take away from the pay and benefits of the men and women in uniform, as well as veterans. They don't deserve it just as much as any teacher doesn't deserve it. My G.I. Bill has already been fucked with in some seriously fucking bullshit ways, this year alone. |
First, it is ridiculously big, compared to other programs. Military budgeting alone accounted for between 28 and 38% of the total money spent by the US last year (almost $700 billion dollars, while note, bringing in no money on its own to fund it), and that specifically does not account for the appropriations for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, which push it up even further (and come from "Discretionary" funds, if you are looking into the budget).
Keep in mind that the budget of our military is over 10 times as much as the country with the second highest military budget (China, rocking at approx. $60 billion). This is a ridiculous expenditure. We could cut it in half and still have a much larger military than any other nation on Earth. And yet if a politician even mentions it as a possibility, we all know what happens.

The military is "the top". It is the single largest expenditure of the US government that has no funding built into it. People point to things like Social Security and Medicare, but both of those have built into them methods of accruing funds. While those methods have problems and do not neccessarily fund as well as they should, the military has no such option.

Hopefully, never. I genuinely think most people do not want them to, and those people shall keep those seeking violence in check. |

sorry. you're welcome. |
Classic Rush. The man as a gift (?) for taking absolutely any news story and figuring out the way to spin it so it looks bad or good for his audience, depending on how he wants it to go. |
