edward said's work on orientalism and his criticism of us foreign policy are of course related, but it's pretty frustrating to see him brought up as though he was someone whose only goal was to bludgeon the west to death with its own guilt by means of a single buzzword. the guy has been dead for nearly a decade, and hasn't been genuinely controversial for a couple more. continuing to treat him like some kind of clandestine jihadist is just an admission of having never really bothered to think about what he was trying to say in the first place.

also, i'm actually kind of glad influential world leaders are having conversations with each other :-\

EDIT: and it seems rather obvious to me why they would want it to be kept secret. if the same group of people met in a public forum, they would not be able to have any conversations in the hypothetical. it would be a disastrous way to propose ideas and talk about internal problems, because as soon as the media caught wind of it even the most inconsequential idle thoughts and speculation would turn into something worthy of analysis and weeks of coverage. imagine, if everything you ever thought about doing was open to scrutiny of the public!

the political ads posted above. Definitely not referring to anything anyone said in a post here.

I just mean the way it is casually name dropped as the emblem of countries that we owe money to in order to make the entire concept of foreign debt look like a bad idea, building off of the assumption China is bad and scary. Or even worse "...places like China." What do they mean by "places like China"? Just ... foreign countries in general?

I know it is subtle in those ads (more so than in some situations, of course), but for me it isn't any easier to ignore, and is maybe even worse because of how subtly it reinforces the concept that the Chinese are somehow meddling with the American economy.

of course accusations of racism are probably not unwarranted, but i feel as though it is also embarrassing to be caught in such a vast miscalculation of what aspects of folk culture are still comprehensible to modern people. this thing was last prominent in popular culture in "song of the south," and we all know how many of us in the 21st century have actually seen that.
