I'm kind of new to leather. How do you guys recommend I maintain it?

I also picked up a used suede coat a while ago for really cheap. Is caring for one much different from normal leather?

Most of the sites sites I've seen on google say to apply conditioner annually and water repellant somewhat more often with occasional professional cleanings; do you think this would be insufficient? What exactly is vanish and renovator?

Edit: it took me way too long to figure out you meant varnish. And from my understanding of renovator it sounds like it would only be necessary when the leather is old/discoloured/in some way needing renovation. Do I have this straight?
