What will you remember most? What changed the world? Who will you miss?

Topics!

- Gas went from to $100 a barrel in January to $140 in June to $37.71 as of December 26th. Rather than think too much about this, I'll just link that one episode of Sunny.

- Barack Hussein Obama elected as first secret-Muslim black President of America born on foreign soil. Watch Fox News to see if he swears in on a bilbe January 21st. Watch every other network to see what puppy the First Daughters adopt.

- George Carlin, Arthur C Clarke, Michael Crichton, Gary Gygax, Don LaFontaine, Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes, Roy Scheider, Heath Ledger, Tim Russert. Also! Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, who was pretty popular around the Star Trek circles. If you're thinking "What do all these people have in common?" do I have some sad news for you. Edit! Eartha Kitt, who played the (black) 60's Catwoman and Disney's Yzma. W. Mark Felt, better known as "Deep Throat".

- Michale Phelps wins eight gold medals at the Chinese Olympics. $300 million two-hour opening ceremony. Google "2008 China" also returns news of tainted milk, lead-based paints in toys and an earthquake that killed 69,000 (officially). To compare, hurricane Katrina's death toll is at 1,800 (officially).

- Banks/Wall Street/Big Three bailouts, housing market, 401k disappearing, recession madness. There will be more on that next year, though...

Also Peter Brock and Steve Irwin for the above list.

Man, I was so sure that Russell Crowe would be the next Australian celebrity to die after those two...

Eurr... Brock and Irwin died in '06...?

- Sort-of stapled on to Marco's points: '08 marks governmental decisions to throw 700 800 billion USD into a bailout 'rescue plan', and then throw another 800 billion USD into another much less publicized plot to 'unfreeze lending'.

- Largest Ponzi scheme bust in American history, involving somewhere around 50 billion USD, and led by a former NASDAQ chairman (who faces up to twenty years in prison and a five million dollar fine (don't try this at home, kids!)).

- Japanese researcher develops method to induce pluripotent stem cells from regular human tissues.

Wikipedia wrote:
It is unknown what will happen to the series following Eartha Kitt's death because of her recent death on December 25, 2008.[3] Production has been haulted and no new episodes have yet to be determined which is called "Paused Cancellation," which means a main actor or actress has died or leaves. They cannot continue the series until Disney decides to resume production.

The show in question, Emperor's New School, wasn't half bad and Eartha won a bunch of awards for voicing Yzma. It's a real toss-up if they'll continue the show or not. Similar deaths I can think of were Phil Hartman and John Ritter. Both went on after they died. Simpsons phased out Phil's characters and 8 Simple Rules went another two seasons.

I hate not-knowing. You'd think that any contract with an actor over 50 would have a little box to check with "I give my blessing for the project to continue on without me."

Also, Phil was supposed to voice Zapp Brannigan in Futurama but never got to, but it's soooo obvious when you think about it that he was written for Phil.
