Wow, first time I saw something like that by a company involving video games. _________________

| This of course is also true for retail, but typically big box stores make their money on accessories and other non-videogame related merchandise they sell you on your visit. The EB/gamestop model is supported by overcharging for tradeins. |

I knew this also, but seeing it again made me think that the whole angst over buying and selling of used games on a publisher level is complete bullshit. If selling your product used is the only way anyone else can make money off of it you're probably not running on the most effective business model in the first place.
Also: Would anyone be offended if games implemented an official release day (Tuesday) like movies and music do?

4. No Product Returns:
This one blows our minds; we are not big enough to return products. The game industry releases many bad games, and word of mouth spreads fast to the consumer. All of those bunk games sit on our shelves. If we do end up selling them, we lose more money, due to the lack of price protection. They won’t let us return the bombs. So if we buy a bad title, we are stuck on an industry-induced money losing ride through the land of price drops. Of course, if the video game industry produced quality games, we wouldn’t have this issue. |

The 2/5 and 2/6 shipping dates on the EBGames.com coming soon section would disagree with you. So would the fact that 95% of all games aren't street dated and stores can sell them whenever they get them - something that isn't true of CDs and DVDs.

Yet they never actually go on sale until Wednesday. At least that seems to be the case around here. |

"Never"?
It's a distribution thing. Nintendo send their stuff out directly from the factory so that it arrives in stores on Tuesday. Company X sends their stock to EB/GS distribution warehouses and they are mailed out to arrive Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, depending on how far they are from the warehouses and cost. Company Z sends out their product 6 days early to ensure that every store has it ready for the Tuesday launch. If they don't have it or FedEx lost the lost, then they can do an emergency distro and send a second one. (This also happens a lot with game consoles at launches)
Street date is more recognized within the music, movies and DVD worlds, because they are strictly enforced. Why? Because the stores and theaters have their boxes arrive days or weeks before they are officially "out". Not all the time. Same for games. WoW Burning Crusade, Halo 2, certain Wii and PS3 games were street dated. EA sends out the big sports games a few days early. I can clearly remember Fight Night, King Kong, Madden waiting int he back room overnight.
Street date is just a date. The production start and stop dates are controlled, just like when the distribution dates are set for a certian week, or month, well before the game is finialized. If it isn't pushed back/delayed, the final controlled date is when stores are allowed to sell the game. The stores rarely go against this, as there are fines and it gets you in serious trouble. So don't go prying around EB saying "hey I know you got the game back there, so here's an extra 5/10/whatever to sell it to me now." It kind of annoys us. Unless we are hungry and forgot our wallets at home. Then it's tempting.
Boo hoo, you had to wait to wednesday. Go preorder the game online, get it a day early or on time, and stop whining about brick and morter stores. B&E stores have convenience on thier side. Controller is broken? Go run out and get another, without having to wait 2-3 days. Midnight launches! Chatting with the hygenically perfect and well-spoken staff who are delighted to meet you! Demo stations! Weeee!! _________________ Still alive. |

I used to work at a mom&pop import/used games store a while back and we never made any money on new stuff.
A lot of times when a new game that everyone wanted came out we would just go to Best Buy or whatever and buy a few of them there. Then put them up for sale that morning.
Was easier to just take the tax lose to say it was in stock and get people in the store to look at used stuff. Our "real" shipment of the said games wouldnt come in for 3-4 days after the release date. |
