Also: Would anyone be offended if games implemented an official release day (Tuesday) like movies and music do?

Most games do have a release date of Tues already.

Yet they never actually go on sale until Wednesday. At least that seems to be the case around here.

"Never"?

It's a distribution thing. Nintendo send their stuff out directly from the factory so that it arrives in stores on Tuesday. Company X sends their stock to EB/GS distribution warehouses and they are mailed out to arrive Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, depending on how far they are from the warehouses and cost. Company Z sends out their product 6 days early to ensure that every store has it ready for the Tuesday launch. If they don't have it or FedEx lost the lost, then they can do an emergency distro and send a second one. (This also happens a lot with game consoles at launches)

Street date is more recognized within the music, movies and DVD worlds, because they are strictly enforced. Why? Because the stores and theaters have their boxes arrive days or weeks before they are officially "out". Not all the time. Same for games. WoW Burning Crusade, Halo 2, certain Wii and PS3 games were street dated. EA sends out the big sports games a few days early. I can clearly remember Fight Night, King Kong, Madden waiting int he back room overnight.

Street date is just a date. The production start and stop dates are controlled, just like when the distribution dates are set for a certian week, or month, well before the game is finialized. If it isn't pushed back/delayed, the final controlled date is when stores are allowed to sell the game. The stores rarely go against this, as there are fines and it gets you in serious trouble. So don't go prying around EB saying "hey I know you got the game back there, so here's an extra 5/10/whatever to sell it to me now." It kind of annoys us. Unless we are hungry and forgot our wallets at home. Then it's tempting.

Boo hoo, you had to wait to wednesday. Go preorder the game online, get it a day early or on time, and stop whining about brick and morter stores. B&E stores have convenience on thier side. Controller is broken? Go run out and get another, without having to wait 2-3 days. Midnight launches! Chatting with the hygenically perfect and well-spoken staff who are delighted to meet you! Demo stations! Weeee!!
