I'm in the market for a new PS2.

I bought Rogue Galaxy last night, and my PS2 wouldn't see it. I mean wouldn't SEE it, I wasn't even getting Disc Read Errors. It just acted like there was no disc in there. I tested it with other discs laying around, and they all worked, but my new Rogue Galaxy didn't. So, tonight, I exchanged it for another copy, and it had the same problem.

I've come to the conclusion that RG is pressed on some new type of disc that my PS2 can't handle, and that means I need a new system. I've been really wanting to anyway, since mine also won't read blue or gold discs, so this is basically the best excuse I'm going to get.

So that brings me to my main question:

Is there a version of the PS2 hardware that is generally accepted to be the best-behaving model? And if so, how can I be sure that I get that version?

The latest PStwo is pretty stable, as far as I know. You can get em for cheap now.

I ain't got no truck of money to spend on a PS3, even if I DO also need a space heater.

I was considering the slim model, but for some reason, something in the back of my mind suggested that I might have heard someone say that one of the revisions of the large PS2 was actually better, so I'd like to find out if that's true before I bumble on down to GameStop.

Well, I would tell you that a later revision of the fat PS2 is better, mainly becuase you can't put a hard drive in a slim PS2!

Rogue Galaxy runs so nice from a HDD.

I HAVE considered this! I actually have the hard drive, after all.

Then again, it might be in my best interests to consider cutting ties with the hard drive, since it's the fulcrum of my hatred toward my PS2.

The story goes something like this:

It's hard for me to imagine, now, but there was indeed a time BEFORE I owned a Playstation 2. I managed to get by with playing on friends' systems now and then, even going so far as to buy a memory card to keep all my saves on. Well, Final Fantasy 11 came around, and I wanted to try it pretty hard, so I caved and bought the PS2 version.

Without actually owning a PS2.

I borrowed my friend Ryan's PS2 and installed the hard drive in it, and played me some FFXI. It was working rather well! A week later, I had made up my mind to finally take the plunge and purchase a system of my own.

About this time, bad news struck. While looking for some tips for FFXI on gamefaqs, I stumbled across a thread that informed me that the hard drive couldn't be switched from one system to another without formatting all the data on it. After a bout of worrying and pondering, I had a chat with Ryan, and he agreed to my plan of purchasing a new PS2, giving it to him, and keeping his. I mean, my Red Mage was already level 20! That is a hell of a lot of work, in FF11. I would be losing all of that.

...It seemed like a good idea at the time. In hindsight, it was the worst of ideas.

You see, his was a very old system. Version 3, I think it might be? I'm not sure. The one I bought him was Version 9. The newest, best one. The one with a fan that DIDN'T pull dirt across the laser lens.

Well, a year later, "my" PS2 suddenly wakes up unable to recognize the hard drive. All my data, my archived saves, my Victorious Boxers replays, my Gran Turismo replays, my Final Fantasy 11 character (R.I.P. Voltz), my Resident Evil: Online Whatever data, all of it gone forever. The reason I had made the stupid decision in the first place is gone.

Not TOO long afterwards, he moved out of town. He moved to Disney, didn't leave any contact information.

Which brings us to today. I have an old PS2 that won't read blue, gold, or dual layer discs, and also can't see hard drives. And I just bought a $40 game that I'd been waiting over two years to play, and it refuses to even admit there's a disc there.

Conclusion: If I get a new PS2, I'm going to beat the hell out of this one with a sledge hammer. Maybe I'll take pictures for you guys.

I mean like, is there some kind of serial number trick I can use to make sure I get the Secret Ultimo-Prime Edition? I would like to not ever have to worry about "will my PS2 work with this?" again.

I think only the first run of the slim PS2s had any hardware issues.

Have you tried opening the case up, taking the top of the drive off, and giving the lens/drive apparatus a good cleaning? You'd be surprised how well this works, and how easy it is to do.

Err. Well. I kinda got mad and kicked it. I don't know if it even still works at all. I'll give that a shot, though.

You put real discs in your PS2?

Oh, right, the swap magic discs.

No, I kicked it AFTER it didn't work. Like, just before starting this thread.

Also I just got finished taking it apart three times and cleaning it and it's just no use.

I'm going to have to get a new one.

If the HD is all preformatted perhaps you can sell it to someone here?

Since you may be getting a slim one?

I just don't like seeing good equipment being wasted like that. Also if you procure a fat one they have solderless chips for them. That blew my mind when I first saw one.

I... guess? Are they really that in demand? I never really thought about it.

Nothing wrong with try before you buy. Piracy made me try and buy Rocket Slime, and give up on and cancel my preorder of PW2. IMO "borrowing" these games directed my cash to the worthier title.

That's what I'm leaning towards. I guess I'll get a PS2 tomorrow, and spend tonight drinking midshelf brandy and trying yet again to play RE4 and enjoy it this time.

Hey, you guys are the one who brought piracy into this thread, not me. Running games from the hard drive has a lot more uses than just piracy (keeping disc copies in good shape, easily running (most) import games without a need for a fliptop, etc) so get yer damn minds out of the gutter!

If there are any older games in particular that you want to play, then you'll want to search for compatibility lists.

Basically, as Sony made newer versions of the hardware, more problems crept into older games. Some are minor issues, while some games can effectively be rendered unplayable. PS1 games suffer the worst, but there are PS2 games on the lists as well. Odds are it won't affect you, but it might.

The funniest part of this story is that your character is stored on their servers and not on your hard drive. Even if you had to reinstall the game you wouldn't have lost an ounce of progress...

Also, you're best off with a new system. Buying a used one you never know what it's been through and you're pretty likely to end up with another situation like your first PS2.

Why didn't you get the (superior) pc version of ffxi in the first place? It would have been way cheaper (assuming your pc wasn't total crap), and was out for about 5 months before the PS2 version.

Yeah, but I didn't find that out until quite a while later.

At the time, yeah, my PC WAS pretty crap. By the time my PC was good enough to run it, I wasn't very interested anymore.
