Has anyone made a Mirror Mode for left to right platformers?
Mirror SMB3 would be something. _________________

that'd be interesting...
some monitors allow mirroring, and if you'd then swap left and right in an emulator.... kinda hard to read i guess, but... |

I don't know why, but I've noticed today, playing SMW2 "Yoshi's Island", that I tend to run immediately right instead of left when a level starts.
Donkey Kong Country had ... three or four levels that gave you something if you did so, but for whatever reason, it's something that I'm doing now whenever I'm playing a plattformer.
So, a mirrored SMW would be ... weird in a different way for me! _________________

This is the best idea I've heard in a while. How hard would that be from a hacking perspective?
Man. I'd play the shit out of mirrored SMB3. _________________

Yeah, the pulled that off pretty well. The circular aspect of it was enjoyable, at least. _________________

You mean run left instead of right, correct?
Because in DKC, they had a DK Coin hidden a few feet to the left of the beginning, which is what started the backwards beginning for me. _________________ PS3 - Cryoh

Exactly that kind of thing, the only thing missing in DKC1 were the hidden coins.
Nevertheless, you could short-cut half a stage if you went left in one particular stage ... I think it was that stage right before that [edit] the first [/edit] lorry-stage. _________________

metrovanias have a good amount of back-tracking...
Once you get to Zebes, Super Metroid even forces you to go left. Maybe thats what the designers had in mind? Like forcing the mindset of exploration on you by going against the standard "left to right" as the first action on the new planet. |

It was after Mine Cart Carnage, and it was the only level where those genuinely freaky claymation Kremlings appeared. |

Yeah, I've always wondered why you run left to right in Japanese platformers since the language is right to left... right? _________________

is it tied to timelines? I mean, I don't know how they work in Japan (if timelines are written any differently), but yeah, it might have a bit to do with that. |

I could also be that "jump man" sarted running right first thing in Donkey Kong. SMB was an extension of that, and after that came out people just copied it. |

Traditionally, Japanese is written in a format called tategaki. In this format, the characters are written in columns going from top to bottom, with columns ordered from right to left. After reaching the bottom of each column, the reader continues at the top of the column to the left of the current one. This copies the column order of Chinese.
Modern Japanese also uses another writing format, called yokogaki. This writing format is identical to that of European languages such as English, with characters arranged in rows which are read from left to right, with successive rows going downwards. |

Thank you.
I couldn't remember where I read the word origins for "tate" and "yoko." |

It's not actually from the words for the writing styles. 縦 (ta te) means vertical and 横(yo ko) means horizontal. _________________
