Sounds like most disappointment stems from the movie not going in the same direction as the viewers expectations. Like ghost_dinosaur said, there didn't have to be architects, but there were. The story is crafted with their existence in mind. The film makes a point of the dreams needing to be mostly realistic, but slightly malleable. So most of the events aren't completely outlandish surrealism. I suppose I wasn't disappointed because I didn't go into the film with any expectations; I really knew barely anything about the film at all.

I thought it did pretty well in establishing rules and never breaking them; it just found ways of playing with the rules to make some interesting situations, such as the effect higher level dreams have on lower level dreams. I suppose this could be argued as both a pro and a con, but there isn't a lot of gravitas when characters come up with an idea to utilize the dream laws to advance further toward their goal. It's not treated as some sort of astounding revelation; it's merely an obvious technique following the laws established by the movie.

Overall, the movie was just "fun". It doesn't make you think, nor does it challenge your imagination. It was just a fun thriller movie. There were certain things that I thought could have been handled better, such as during the recruitment scenes, everyone went from "no that's impossible" to "oh i have an idea" a bit too quickly, and I didn't quite understand how DiCaprio got over his wife-issues at the end so quickly, but overall I thought Inception was pretty great. I also really enjoyed the main theme. Though played often, it's very striking, and the huge amount of bass provided by the theater caused it to have a large impact on the atmosphere. It's foreboding and grim, and I feel we might see more of it in future movies. I wouldn't want to watch Inception without some very strong bass.

But I don't know anything about movies, so I'm probably wrong.

Before the movie, there was a trailer for Devil. When the words "From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan" appeared, everyone else in the theater burst out laughing. I'm not completely sure how that should be taken, but I got the impression it was more of ridicule than anything else. It's amazing how much he has fallen after being such a darling after The Sixth Sense.

antitype, you make Inception sound like eXistenZ, except less interesting. But with more action.

I haven't seen eXistenZ, but I never felt the action was the main focus in Inception. I'd think the only scene where the action is the focus was the fight in the hotel. All of the scenes with gun fights are just stuff going on while the characters are doing their thing. That's why I think of Inception as more of a thriller than an action movie.

Though admittedly I'm probably thinking of the thriller genre incorrectly.

But the point I'm trying to make is that the movie wasn't heavy on action.

I could have sworn the Dark Knight didn't have any music during the actual movie. It was one of the things that popped out at me and helped give it the gritty, realistic atmosphere. I guess I was wrong?

Watched Ninja Assassin last night. This movie was far bloodier than I anticipated, and far more dull than I anticipated as well. Rain wasn't very attractive either. I wonder why he's such a heart throb.

They were awful ninja and awful assassins. What the hell kind of super ninja gets caught on camera walking away from the scene of the crime with his mask off? The fights weren't as entertaining, nor as plentiful, as I had hoped.

Also, I would like to note that Inception made me want to play Phantom Dust again, as they shared similar concepts. Phantom Dust DS where did you go?????????

The problem with that explanation is that the writer creates many character motivations but he doesn't provide any backing in the movie that could hint at it being a possibility. I can't think of any either. The only hint at it all being a dream is the one we all know about, the spinning top at the end, but none of his conjectures are justified by just that. It's essentially fan-fiction.

The one thing I was wondering about involved Cobb's children. Was it ever established how long ago Cobb left his home? I wonder, because at the end of the movie his children are the same age as his memories. The other closest thing to a hint of it being a dream was that the children were standing in the same pose as Cobb's memories, but this could also be chocked up to Hollywood cheesiness.

How do you not remember Saito? They yell his name so much.

Oh man, I just figured it out: Cobb is still in a super dream world with Mal. The Mal we see in the end is the real Mal, who was locked up in a super cage made with Cobb's super dream powers. The Mals we see elsewhere are Mal Clones created by Mal to get revenge on Cobb. The Mal who committed suicide is a fake Mal Cobb made to replace the real Mal.

It all makes sense!

Either that, or Cobb led an inception into our own minds to plant the idea that we should buy the DVD and Blu-ray coming this Fall from Warner Brothers Pictures.

So David Fincher is adapting The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I hear the books are the swedish equivalent of Dan Brown with a rape fetish, but directors have done wonders with poor source material before.

Is adapting? I thought it was out already.
