thank you!
the thing that makes recommending flash games hard is the "pretty good" qualifier.

this is all pretty fascinating.
a new problem has arisen, though: my ps2 pad has gone haywire. i turned on edf2 and only the left stick seemed to function, so i couldn't get beyond the title screen. then i put in metal slug 3, and the menu screen madly flips between all the choices. if i select one, the game immediately cancels it. the impression i get is that the game is receiving constant input from the d-pad and face buttons. does anyone have any clue what's going on here?

the keys don't feel stuck, and yes, it's a first party controller. i tried putting it in the second controller port and it wouldn't do anything, but maybe that's because there's nothing for the second player to do on edf2's title screen, and i can't get any farther than that. _________________

later i'll try a bunch of games with the controller in the second slot. in the meantime, i'm trying to find breen's speech on the dangers of instinct, which plays in the plaza in the first chapter of half-life 2. the script at gamefaqs doesn't have it. _________________

there's biometal gust, a remake of biometal (a hori shooter for the sfc/snes) a flat-color polygon remake of daioh gale (the example game from the superfami dezaemon) made with deza2's 3d workshop, and an original vertical shooter about nightmare butterflies. HOWEVER, if you watch the attract mode for a while, eventually you'll start to see demos of other games, and if you press start while they're playing, they'll download to your user game. one of them is a super-hard gradius style game with flying saturns that shoot cds, the other is a short vertical shooter with super cute sprites that look like they're out of a snes rpg.
also if you want to see some neat stuff do a search for "deza2" on youtube. _________________

no home should be without a pc-engine. it's also really cheap to collect for if you go with used games. you want galaga 88 and atomic robo-kid special for starters. consider ninja spirit and devil crash. _________________

i can't remember in which order they are off the top of my head, but one of them's a soft reset and one is save. (if you hold a and press start you'll continue from the highest world you saved in.) _________________

when you save, the game will remember what world you got up to and you'll be able to continue from that world the next time you start the game. you can also start a new game (not holding a when you press start). if you save, it'll save the world you're on, so don't overwrite a save that's later in the game. if you want to get back to the world you saved at, just turn the game off and back on and hold a and press start. _________________

i wanted to use doom because it was simple and i have a better grasp of the limitations of doom levels than any other first-person shooting game
i was thinking about using forge, because forge is beautiful and easy, but it's mac only as far as i know

forge?

marathon's level editor
it's really polished. you go into a first-person perspective and navigate the space to add textures and adjust details

I've seen quake editors that let you do that
actualluy
there's an open source FPS engine whose editor is entirely in-engine...
but I can't remember what it's called
the quick question is: what is it called? _________________

i've always thought that "mother" referred to the earth. but yeah, relationships with mothers (and grandmothers) play important roles in the mother games. _________________

initially it wasn't possible to save data to a famicom disk, so the disk system was a way for nintendo to release more ambitious games: games that actually save player progress. the neat side effect of the disk format is you could actually rewrite your disks with new games instead of buying new game carts. anyway, it wasn't long before they figured out how to save data to carts, which is why the nes never got a disk system.
a while ago nfg translated the manga / instruction manual that comes with the fds. it should give you some idea of what the good and bad things about the disk system are.
while you're at it find an fds emulator and play otocky. it is one of the good things about the disk system. _________________

I'm a bit late to the FDS discussion, but I also recommend Nazo no Murasame-Jo. |
murasame is basically kage's superfast gameplay in zelda's world and dungeons, and it's beautiful to boot. i have the gba port so i don't have to worry about load times, but if you've never played it by all means cancel your plans for this evening. _________________

arkanoid plays really well with the stylus, though i love the paddle, both for arkanoid and space invaders, and i'd recommend importing one if you can. the invisible space between the screens has always felt pretty natural to me in arkanoid. it helps that the ball never goes back and forth between the screens rapidly: the top screen is always where the blocks are, and the bottom screen is always where the paddle is, so there's always that very tennis sense of serve, return. the game uses space really well, despite the initial feeling that there must be wasted space on the bottom screen. _________________

so let's say hypothetically i'm releasing a game a week from tomorrow and i want to record a gameplay video for youtube. what's a good free screen recorder THAT WILL ALSO RECORD AUDIO FROM SPEAKERS, because that seems to be the part all the programs i've found seem to have trouble with. camstudio included. _________________

goddammit dell do you have any idea how much they made me pay for your laptop
total recorder grabs audio fine though. i guess i could record the video with camstudio and the audio with total recorder and then patch them together, but that sounds like a lot more work than i want. _________________

thanks takashi!
crossposted from the gamer's quarter:
so, after collecting various bits of advice, the solution that i arrived at was to record video using camstudio, record audio using total recorder, and then add the audio track to the video track with virtualdub. the problem was getting both tracks to sync, and in a way that was foolproof and repeatable (i don't know how many times i'm going to need to record).
i hit on the idea of giving both programs the same RECORD and STOP shortcut. in practice, though, one program catches the keypress and the other one doesn't (because it's already been caught). so they needed to have different shortcuts and i a way of triggering them both at the same time.
my solution: joy2key. now i have my saturn pad rigged so that pressing the B button calls both programs' RECORD shortcuts, simultaneously, and pressing the A button calls both programs' STOP shortcuts. sure enough, i get a video track and audio track of the same length that sync perfectly. amazing. _________________

three questions.
ONE. there's this old two-player arcade game with these bunnies tied to, i dunno, sticks of dynamite maybe? players compete to make their opponent's bunny explode first? something like that? does anyone know the game i'm talking about?
TWO. there was a question here. it's gone now.
THREE. how's saturn emulation these days? _________________
