Sticker Causes Memphis
Airport Scare
* Lauren Lee
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Police searched a man and took him into custody after a bomb scare at the Memphis airport. Officials say an airport police officer found a bike chained outside Terminal C with a sticker on it indicating it was a pipe bomb.
"We established a perimeter around it and had a fire watch in case there was an explosion," said John Greaud, vice president of airport operations. "We had one of our K9 dogs confirm it was not an explosive."
"This Bike is a Pipe Bomb" is the name of a Florida punk band and stickers bearing their name are relatively common on bicycles.
Once FOX13 told airport officials about the popular decal, they said that it very well could be the same sticker, but when it was found it was taken as a serious threat.
Terminal C and the passenger drop off area were cleared during the false alarm. Some flights were delayed.
"That's scary, that's scary," said Dora Rogers. "I really was afraid because my daughter was supposed to be here at six o'clock."
Rogers was caught in the miles long traffic jam outside the airport. She saw passengers take drastic measures trying to make their flight.
"They were starting to get out of their cars pulling their luggage trying to get to the airport and I was trying to find out what was going on," she said.
If this does turn out to be just a popular sticker taken out of context, this would not be the first time the "This Bike is a Pipe Bomb" sticker caused chaos. In 2006, Ohio University shut down when an officer found a bike unattended with the sticker on it.
Like the Ohio officers, the airport cops don't take any chances.
"Safety of the traveling public is our first concern," said Greaud.

I'm surprised they didn't blow it up anyway to 'set an example'. _________________

PEOPLE ARE SO FUCKING STUPID
Because terrorists clearly label all bombs with custom printed vinyl stickers.
Dose this mean that if I hate someone I can just stick "this here is a bomb" stickers to things they own? _________________ Mixtapes galore ~ VG MUSIC

Guys, people do plant bombs in buildings clearly marked as bombs or with threatening letters explaining malicious intent. It is not unheard of.
You also can't blame officials responsible for protecting citizens for not knowing an obscure punk band or the culture associated with it.
Also, anyone who leaves anything unattended near an airport or highly sensitive building like that with the words BOMB on it is asking for a misunderstanding. |

Bicycles are commonly used for IEDs because you can fit a lot of explosives in the tubes, so it's not ridiculous. |

First off, I'm going to think really really hard about the last time someone use a bike as an IED in the states.
Then I'm going to think about how a half-box box of ammo is cheaper than a Big Mac combo meal. Getting a gun without a license is slightly more challenging than googling "gun show" and remembering what state I'm in.
Now! I'm going to think of ten more readily capable everyday pedestrian objects to cram full of explosives.
It's always fun walking around after realizing that everything around you could be a bomb. Hell, at that point, seeing a "This object is a bomb" sticker might not be as funny. In fact! I'd be a little pissed off it wasn't. Diverting my fear from the REAL bomb. That plastic flower vase. The half-empty fast food bag. That suspicious-looking toddler's back pack.
Oh. And way to let the terrorists win, looooooooooooosssssssssssseeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrr. _________________ Still alive. |

Once this Israeli ship security guy (the Israeli ship security guys are always the most intense ship security guys) was very unhappy because I didn't know who had left a bike locked up near their gangway.
The fact that it was about ten feet away from his own people on the dock, so I reasoned that it was an area they could keep track of (most of my job on that dock was looking in the opposite direction) did not phase him.
He wanted to know who put that bike there.
I was the man responsible. _________________

They would also prohibit all bicycles from entering the area. Which would be fine, because the number of people inconvenienced would be less than the number of people relieved by such a measure.
However! If this band were "This Car is a Bomb" and on a car and it blew up... They wouldn't just prohibit cars. Then! All of a sudden such a measure would be unthinkable and going too far.
Man, I think there would be teenagers doing nothing but running around slapping those stickers on cars then.
Also! Surprised no one brought up the old first amendment -vs- yelling fire in a crowded theater debate. _________________ Still alive. |

True story
Was seeking employment at one time a d went to a hotel to look for work in their kitchen. Unbeknownst to me, president w Bush was doing some sort of speech there. A secret service agent approached me and asked what I had in my satchel. I answered truthfully that my bag was full of knives and a couple blow torches. I then asked if they needed to go through it to check for anything. They told me it was ok and waved me through. _________________
