learn the korean alphabet with about two days' worth of exertion, then meditate on the fact that you sure as hell don't want to stick around in korea

A friend of mine went there to teach, pretty cool guy. Loved the place, may never leave. Grip summa that Korean beer. Super cheap and far better than its general Japanese counterpart.

Two of my ex-roommates were Koreans from Seoul and students at Yonsei, awesome guys. Gonna go there in the middle of the blazing summer to hang out with them and stay with their families. Tell me if/when you find something radical to do.

There's a lot to do, but what I'd recommend? Take a train or bus and go hiking. The part of Korea that I found the most beautiful were some of the mountains and shrines that were pretty out of the way. If you're not staying very long? I'd just say get tanked. Maybe try and find some hookers. My roommates certainly had no problems with the latter two options.

i know a lot of people who've loved living in korea but it doesn't sound like it'd be the most overwhelmingly awesome place to hit up for a few days.

still, i'm going to do it at some point, it'd be dumb not to i guess.

learning hangul would probably be a good idea yes!

YES FOOD IS A GOOD IDEA.

A DAMN GOOD IDEA.

Actually I had a student, because I'm going to work even if they're not fucking paying me, and a student goes, "You're going to Korea? You can eat DOG!"

So it's not just a western stereotype. You fucking dog eating son of a bitch. I bet that's what you mean by good food isn't it?

fyi: korean people actually do, on occasion, eat dogs

in addition, some of the japanese people mentioning that you can eat dog in korea are not being "racist" so much as they are probably indicating that they wouldn't mind trying some dog meat themselves

after all, they eat horses and whales over here

I don't know about that. You'd drink Hite or Cass over Sapporo or Asahi?

dolsot bibimbap.

as someone who is currently dating a korean girl, i have found the most useful phrases in korean to be

"chou gi yo!" (i dont know how to romanize korean but pretend this is japanese) .. you wont got served in restaurants without this. gotta be ruude!

and ___________ duh joo se yo .. like bulgogi joo se yo. everything ends with yo, or da, for some reason in this language.

i dont pretend to know much about korean but i've had great success with those two phrases.

In general I am not a fan of the "industry standard" Japanese beer (i.e. Super Dry, Kirin Nama), moreso because it usually costs about 6 bucks a litre, and far more for anything darker. Hite is shit, but Cass you can get for like a buck a jug last I heard, and i've heard it tastes not so bad. Of course, OB is king of them all!

Oh yeah, Rudie, if you get a chance to go near the DMZ (doesn't seem like you are, but what the hay), see if you can sneak a look into a North Korean shop in the area and pick up a bottle of NK government-approved Soju (there is only one kind afaik); the stuff never really gets more expensive than 5 bucks a bottle. Be careful though: they will definitely try to haggle you for two bottles at like half price, but you can only bring one bottle of liquor with you across the DMZ. Even though you don't drink, it makes an incredible party favor at your next enkai, especially if you don't tell your friends its from NK until after they drink it. Watch them eyes bug out.

Freshly seared dog and a jug of Cass. Fuck yeah. What's the Korean equivalent of Dueling Banjos?

Kapp is dead on. That first one is equivalent to saying "excuse me!" and will get you service all the time while the second line is just asking "please give me more ____."

One thing I remember about Korea was that if you can argue, you can barter for EVERYTHING, especially food and services. I went as a kid with my mom and her friend and her friend got us half price for EVERYTHING, it was amazing. She'd just tear the cashiers apart at restaurants, yelling at them for slow service, no refills, and just about every minute thing. Oh, also, if store owners/taxi drivers/other merchants see you and realize you're from America, they'll not so subtly hike up the price by like 50% or more. I guess this would already apply to you since you can't hide being non-Korean though.

Also, Japanese things like books and stuff are cheaper in Korean than in Japan for some reason, though this may have changed in the 10 years I haven't gone.

Also, as for eating dog - my friend told me that they only do that in some backalley secret places now as they are ashamed of it or something. He said a family friend hooked him up with some at this restaurant, ordering it off some unlisted menu, and he said the moment his mouth tasted the meat and felt the texture and flavor on his tongue, he couldn't go back. But then when he left the restaurant, a stray dog spotted him and wouldn't stop barking at him, as if he was tainted. The dogs, they knew.

Other tasty things to eat:
- bulgogi
- japche
- chicken (Kyochon? I think they have it there)
- bibimbap
- soondubu
- stuffs i'll update more later

kyochon/bonchon is the BUSINESS. Hands down the best wings of any cuisine, ever. They're like crack, and completely different than any chicken wing you've ever had.

I went to Korea! I really don't want to spend a long time in the country! Even a short time was pushing it. The plentiful supply of Smoothie King, Dunkin' Donuts, and delicious korean street food pulled me through.

The Korean food in Tokyo was better than what I had. Except for the restaurant my girl's korean friends took us too. That was fucking delicious. I need to find that here.

I uploaded a bunch of photos.

What I did! I ate a bunch of delicious fucking food. I had Smoothie King and Dunkin' Donuts every chance I had (actually my first time going to a DD and I'm in love.)

I didn't see any historical things in Seoul, pretty much just shopping and giggling like an idiot anytime the train went past Dongjak. I did go to this place about an hour south of Seoul station, Suwon (Suwan?) Fortress. It was pretty cool. Especially since I said fuck the bus and we walked from the station to there (which was actually up a bunch of hills.) Had a really nice view. We got stiffed because someone woman grabbed us by the arms and made us pay to walk around the fortress but it was the equivalent of 3 dollars.

Everything in Korea is moronically cheap!

If it's not moronically cheap, you can bargain to make it cheap. Bargaining really is everything in the country. Trying to shop in the giant all night department stores with literally 2000 shops is a nightmare. The girls' floors were fine. The guys' floors had people screaming AT US (In Japan they just scream in general) in Korean, Japanese, and English, whatever would cause us to look at us for a second. They would also grab you. I didn't find anything in those stores. The air was terrible, the personal space invasion was damn annoying.

Oh wait I did buy a totally sweet tshirt I guess! I also bought really great girl jeans for about 10 dollars. I've finally fullfilled the destiny of owning a pair of girl jeans.

Things that drove me mad
*Dudes getting on the train with loud speakers trying to sell pipe cleaner
*The beggers on the train physically grabbing hands until you got out your wallet/purse and gave them money
*Being in any line and the person behind you literally breathing down your neck, so you move forward and they move to touching the back of your shoes with their's.
* The city is pretty much all slum from what I saw. That wouldn't drive me mad, but hmm.

Things that were great
* How cheap everything was! I mean none of the street food cost more than a 3 dollars. I got a medium pizza (American small) for 5 dollars WITH toppings!
* The younger Korean generation is pretty cool.
* Korea gets every game Japan doesn't get (Silent Hill:Homecoming, Force Unleashed PS3, Jak 3 (yeah))

I didn't buy any games though. I did go to the electronics district (because it was that or more dudes screaming at us and my girl couldn't give me a single thing to do instead.) I don't think we got to the real district but the two giant mostly empty buildings with shops near the station (we never actually went outside) had game stores but none of the games had prices and half of them didn't have employees. Would of liked Shadow of the Collosus in a language I utterly don't understand!

But how is Korea?

Well, when you get to your hotel room, lock the fucking door.
