|
|
I won't buy DVDs or go to the movies.
There are so many good ones coming up, and it kills me that I won't see Watchmen, but I'm confident it'll still be in theaters in April. There were also about 10 DVDs I was going to buy but won't now.
My brother doesn't think I'll make it. He says I'm too weak-willed. _________________ "Is Father's Day nine months after Mother's Day, or is it the other way around?" |

I'm giving up all recognition of social-cultural slants that put women and minorities at institutional disadvantage.
The fun part: I'm not giving up the rage! ^_^
EDIT: Thinking about this post, I realize that fake posts about what to give up for Lent are a little too easy. So here's a legit contribution.
I've never found giving something up for Lent personally useful, and I've found it more edifying to add something moral or good to my life instead of removing a vice.
Because, as I figure, I've got a ton of flaws, and there's always another flaw waiting around to take precedence when the noticeable ones get nipped. Instead of digging to get out of that hole, I like the idea of adding to the wonderful things in my life. _________________

on a slightly related note, i just realized to my mild astonishment that i, apropos of who-knows-what, suddenly downloaded and then proceeded to watch all of "BEN-HUR" on wednesday, and just now realized that it was ash wednesday.
whoa! that's almost as bad as going to church ;-/ _________________

I think most Catholics feel bad that they don't take their Catholicism seriously. Christians are probably some of the least religious people I know, which is a good and bad thing.
Then again, I consider religion to mostly be an excuse. _________________

well, she converted a few years ago, and people tend to find it a big deal then, don't they? i don't know, man, but it really weirds me out -- of all things, why this thing? i've never asked her, and sometimes i'll let slip a joke at the expense of the catholic church and she'll mock resentment. |

The reality is, that for most people who actually live Christianity, that is, those who typically go to church on a fairly regular basis, get involved with the community, will find that Christianity is more about the community than the overbearing God that most people perceive Christianity to encompass. Were this the case for all Christians, I would probably still be a devout Catholic. The problem is, as with all things, the nutjobs tend to ruin it for the rest of us.
I was originally enthralled with Christianity not because of the fact that there was some set of rules or that I would get into heaven, but because I liked to sing and learn about music. Jenny was my first piano instructor and I got to play this big booming organ at the local Austin church. I thought it was awesome. It was also the first place where I got to participate in a choir and even on occasion was given solo pieces since, seemingly, many people said I had "musical talent." Eventually I suppose I had a falling out and I forced interest on other things. I became involved with school and local theatre. A similar vein, but becoming interested in technical sound and lighting is quite a bit different from a church choir.
tl;dr Go watch Doubt. _________________

More the second one. To me. I'm not what you would call "Christian" or "religious" but I still enjoy participating in things like church services and prayer groups and church picnics and Lent and whatnot.
To me, Lent is about sacrifice, giving up something dear to you. Even though you know you can have it in a few weeks, it's still a pretty big tax on your character to stay away from it. Some people intentionally overshoot what they are capable of, say TV or video games or Facebook- things they use multiple times daily. Others pick unhealthy habits: smoking, drinking, fast food.
If you stick to it or not, the only person that knows is you. And God, or your priest, or Jebus depending on what you believe. _________________ Still alive. |
