I forgot to mention, it's ok if you include Cyberbots and Battle Circuit fan fiction too

The Maximo template would have worked really well for 3D Castlevania, I always thought. Especially the whole approach of having a largely western design team. In any case, nice find. The art style is like the current Prince of Persia + FUN.

Man I loved what little I played of the first Maximo.
Was kind of wishing that Japanese developers would pick up that trend -- super-hard precision-based sadistic 3D action -- and instead . . . well. Japanese games, for the most part, just keep getting easier. Dynasty Warriors, et cetera.
Hmm. _________________

Maximo is definitely on the list of games that I plan to play at some point but have absolutely no ETA on. _________________ "Did you read that mr. ignorant new games journalist? YOU JUST DON'T FUCKING GET IT. "

I'd always held out hope that we'd see Maximo again someday, but I suppose not. So tragic because I loved the first 2 in addition to the Ghosts and goblins games that inspired them. I think I'm going to cry. _________________

The second Maximo is better. It's just as challenging but isn't as annoying as the first one.

I have heard much to this effect, and played the demo at a kiosk in Akihabara and kind of dug it.
Maybe I'll buy it. Last I remember seeing it, it was 600 yen in a bargain bin at a major retailer, new. _________________

Both Maximo games are beautifully done. I preferred the more unforgiving original, than the slightly button-mashing sequel. The sequel had robots though, so that makes it amazing.
That artwork is wonderful though, it's a great pity the studio behind the games was brought to such a dismal end. _________________

The art was by Susumu Matsushita, right? Man, his art just looks so right in videogames. It's a shame it's usually only ever on boxes. And the covers to Famitsu!
If it wasn't by him, then it was someone doing a damned good imitation.
He needs to design the characters for an RPG? _________________

The sequel fixes the save point/continue issues that the first one has. For that, and that alone, it's the better game.

The guy who headed up the Maximo project was Japanese, though. The staff probably were mostly, too. I remember interviewing him (kind of.)
So there's that. _________________ "Did you read that mr. ignorant new games journalist? YOU JUST DON'T FUCKING GET IT. "

It was Matsushita and he has done work on characters for RPGs (Elfaria and Down the World are two that spring to mind), though that was a good while ago. Whilst he wasn't credited on the Makaimura games, the art style is mighty similar. _________________

Man, that was one of the best things about that game. The fact that there was actually the possibility of failure made it so much more engaging than... pretty much every other 3D platformer, where death means losing a few minutes of progress.
The time I gave Death my continue token and he said "All right... but next time, I'm doubling the price." ... classic videogame moment for me. But then, I'm a masochist like that. |
