I really can't find a way to express just how amazingly terrible an ad campaign this is. This just might beat Sony's white PSP ad! _________________

| If it had been "whatmoredoyouwant.com"or something this might've been not bad, what with the feedback form and all. But I can't imagine why they thought it might be a good idea to insult their potential customers. |

| Japan, your hurting our feelings over here. Don't you know we are very big men with very big feelings? And you are small and must have small feelings with that and little misunderstanding minds, and we wish you wouldn't ignore us all day long like this? |

I selected the "None of the above" option for what was apparently a 1 question survey, and it asked me for my email address so they could send something to me.
The first thing that came to my mind was a message containing various racial slurs. |

i mean, yeah.
snickers, dramatic unintentional gayisms
i like the comment on that blog page that says "this is why i don't buy snickers" -- that was the most hilarious thing i read in a week
if the guy writing it was trying to be exactly as funny as he is, there's no issue here; if he was serious, and who the fuck would know either way, that's pretty sad
personally, as a violent liberal i can most certainly see the irony and intended humor or sincerity of the ad, though fucking god -- the gall, the lack of conscience or THOUGHT behind it
you know, in japan, marketers are SO much more mindful and careful of stuff like this
trust me! i would know!
i've been out of touch with america for a long time -- i don't really mind it, most of the time
then i realize that they're holding the keys to the bus and they can drive it off the side of the bridge if the spirt moves them and i kind of get uneasy _________________

Well I've seen incredibly racist stuff in Japanese commercials. Though I guess they wouldn't have to be mindful of that, since nobody cares.
Hmm, what kind of stuff has caused scandals and boycotts in Japanese commercials anyway?
EDIT: Look at this vile Japanese ad for Pocky-like candy. What the fuck?? What the fuck??? They'd be half-bankrupted by boycotts if they broadcast that in America. |

Now, see. I don't think that's . . . racist or anything. It's a skirt joke. It's also a short people joke. It's also a girls who want candy joke. It doesn't promote violence or animosity or hate. The guy at the end, in fact, is neither overjoyed nor angry at the girl. He's just . . . seeing her panties in photocopied form.
If men wore skirts, this'd be just as poignant if it was a short man on the copier! _________________

| If it doesn't promote physical violence, it at least minimizes psychological violence. It promotes this attitude of "ha ha, sexual harassment is all a big joke. Stop, you're sexually harassing me! ha ha." You don't think some Japanese manager isn't going to see that and get the idea of putting a picture of his dick on his secretary's desk? |

Yet at no point did he actually harass her.
All the man did was leave his pocky on a high shelf and his incompetent secretary got herself into a series of wacky predicaments!
This is on the same level as Bridget Jones' Diary. |

Except when he carefully ate the Pocky at the beginning to look like a blowjob (probably the inspiration for the clip in the first place).
The sexual tension in that clip is unmistakable, the lopsided power relation between the two characters is also unmistakable (look at the way she demurely looks away at the beginning). The commercial shows a situation with all the vibe of sexual harassment, but it tries to make a joke out of it and it also shows the girl actively participating (with the implication that she is not wearing panties, and in way she does not immediately leap away from the copier). It is vile, dangerous garbage.
Look I am no dessgeega and I can appreciate that some slightly racist or slightly sexist stuff is not that bad, but I'm not backing away from my condemnation of that clip. |

Oh for god's sake. I bet you look at anyone swallowing a cylinder and imagine it looks like a blowjob. You need to check your libido, pixelante.
Were I to take a video of my obnoxious co-worker eating udon noodles with his perfectly straight face -- his near-hateful sincerity -- you would no doubt accuse the wet slapping sound of his tongue and his lips to be in imitation of cunnilingus.

He's the old and wrinkled boss and she's the secretary. She doesn't like him even if he likes her. You must not mistake the demure for the interested; occasionally demureness is a coincidence. Occasionally it's an actual reflex. Occasionally it's nature.
The man leaves the so-called "Pocky" in a high place because that's where he puts it, and it's well within his reach, which is the only reach it needs to be in, because, apparently, it's his. The secretary sees him eating the so-called "Pocky" and thinks she'd like some of it as well.
The expression on his face at the end of the commercial is one of many-layered surprise: there are her panties on the photocopies, and why the hell is she so hard-up for chocolate-frosting on a stick?
It must be delicious!
If he were grinning and licking his lips and rubbing his hands together like a greedy burglar, I could see it as some kind of badness.
Though yeah, it is based on a previously existing European commercial, anyway. _________________

This website was a lot more tame than I thought it was going to be.
I'd like to talk to the team behind it. I'm curious what their motivation was. I can think of 3 or 4 different possibilities. _________________ My Hawt Blog Vita Games

Oh please, you think that it never crossed the mind of anyone on the probably rather large team that made this high-budget commercial which is about sex? Even if they didn't notice it while they were writing it, they noticed it at some point during post-production and since they left it in (it would've been easy enough to change the eating style), the allusion is intentional. Don't try the old trick of blaming the person who consciously notices the sexual elements.

I mentioned the demureness as evidence of the power relation, not the sexuality.

I fucking know it's not Pocky, that's why I said "Pocky-like" in my first post.
I'm not even sure how the rest of your post is supposed to counter my points. It seems more to just ignore them. You are simply not looking at the double-meaning of everything in the ad and focusing instead on the innocuous superficial meanings, when the whole point of it is the sexual innuendo. |

Well, I guess my tone was out of proportion; one commercial doesn't make that much difference one way or another, and it's probably not worth getting angry about. I'm not angry so much at this one ad as the whole culture of casual abuse of women in Japan; the general attitude is that it's nothing worth taking seriously, and when you hear references to it it's usually in jokes. It's sort of like the attitude to prison rape here. It's a serious problem but you can't hear the calls for reform among all the snickering.
This commercial was more a punching bag to air my feelings on the general matter. Whenever that happens it often looks like I am overreacting, and I probably ought to have made the iceberg lying behind my complaints clearer. I can see from an American point of view the spot can appear pretty harmless, but seen in its context it feels like part of a pattern.

got my feedback e-mail from what's wrong with u.com
containing such supreme tidbits such as:
"We know you'd agree that Xbox 360 is the ULTIMATE GAME CONSOLE."
"...MANY JAPANESE COMPANIES ARE ALL COMMITTED to create many epic Xbox 360 games."
I wonder if enough people in Japan actually give enough of a shit about Mistwalker and Sakaguchi to buy this thing. _________________ o-/< --- o-\< --- o-|-| --- o^-< |

Let me start by saying that I haven't watched this commercial, so I don't know how blatant it is. I just wanted to address the point you made about how the makers couldn't have not noticed the innuendo in a more general sense.
I live in America, and from what I see on television, in print ads, and in the products I buy, that there are times when companies seriously need a 14 year to tell them when something is sexual.
You know what Sloppy Joes are? They're made from Manwich. Sloppy Joes are made from Manwich. Just add ground beef!
At amusement parks I've see women eat frozen chocolate covered bananas. That one really needs to be seen to be believed.
And man, even outside the sexual this shit is possible. Who here didn't see the white/black power posters for the PSP? There's just no way they understood how horrifically wrong that thing was.
Of course, I'm the type of guy who would think of a blowjob everytime I saw someone swallowing a cylinder. _________________ I can no longer shop happily. |

Just thought some people might be interested to know that the above is the Hong Kong marketing firm behind this campaign. I looked at domain registry info because I honestly doubted this was legit. But it looks like it is! I can't wait for Sony to hire them too and work on the "Buy a PS3 already, you asshole!" campaign. |

About the blowjob thing.
The way I see it, if it involves biting, chewing and swallowing, the it's not about blowjobs. At least not the kinds that I'd consent to. _________________ go away extralife
