I've always been curious about games' sales figures. I recently found VG Charts, which delighted me very much. However, after looking at them, I remembered that I really have no idea what I'm looking at. What constitutes a good sale run for a game? The more popular games, of course, have sold millions. The lowest seem to be around 250-1,000 range. And then there are all the games in the middle.
I know a lot of it is based on the game's budget. A high-budget game selling 5,000 is a lot worse than a very cheap game selling 5,000. But what, generally, is the average number for the average game? How much does an unknown game need to sell to become a "sleeper hit?" Hotel Dusk has apparently sold 62,250 copies.* Is that hot or not?
*I just noticed this is for the Japanese release. It doesn't have American figures yet. |

For a game with no advertising 62k is probably pretty good. _________________

It is hard to get accurate US numbers, at least without paying money and/or signing NDAs.
Nintendo has also made the argument in the past that numbers reported by others for their games are low. Something about the reporting service not including sales from a couple of sources that move a decent percentage of Nintendo games? *shrug* |
