Revising History =D

But seriously. This movie was actually pretty goofy, and I mean in that sense that you'd watch Evil Dead 2 just to see some goofy action. I almost want to see it again now.

Almost.

And John Leguizamo had the best pickup line ever, though I can't remember what it was for the life of me.

Edit: During a date: "If you wanna end this right now and you feel bad about that but you wanna talk to somebody about it, you could call me."

Fort90 has a pretty favorable review of it on GSW. I always thought it was just way too ridiculous, but hey, maybe I need to see it again.

I always liked it. It took something so upbeat and made it so damn dark. People have skeletons stuck on their cars. Bowser is Frank Booth. Yoshi gets fuckin' stabbed!
Most of it was shot in an abandoned cement factory; perhaps the location scout was a Game and Watch fan.

It bugs me that there was never a game based off of that movie.

No, seriously, Link get's a mature game every other one. Why is Mario still stuck collecting stars and washing graffiti?

SMB is the great neglected videogame movie. Considering the base they had to work (fat mustashy plumber tries to save princess from dinausaurs), it's an amazing piece of metawriting. I mean, Street Fighter lore had 10 times that plot and they managed to mess up that movie anyway.

I was like 8 when this movie came out and I saw it in theaters. I loved it then and I'm pretty sure I still love it now. I've never understood the hate it gets. I mean, yeah it's a bad movie and all, but it's like it's so bad it's good you know? I'm just mad that it had that big cliffhanger ending and it never got an appropriate sequel.

Trust the fungus!

The intro felt really tacked on, like the studio said, "Oh fuck. What is this!!?"

I've always imagined a remake of Super Mario Brothers the movie.

This is an idea that bsically expands on the movie world that the SMB created. This is a reimagining of the movie SMB if the film itself were to be reconized as an entity sepereate from the Mario game universe. Instead of remaking the film to be more accuratly close to the source material, instead we expand on the movie universe that was created and create a new alternate universe of the Mario canon.

We can however use "some" source marterial as to realize new ideas.

Setting

Following the idea that dinosaurs evolved from the prehistoric era, we imagine that at the time the pocket dimension that housed them for all these years, they were already fully evolved to a point where they had civilizations. However, instead of basing this to be a society of technology, we take from the original game source material, and imagine that magic is prevalent in the dino world. I would imagine why the dinosaurs had to create this pocket dimension to protect themselves was because they have discovered, or prophesized that the earth killing comet will come and wipe out all forms of life on the planet.

In order to produce this pocket/alternate dimension, they would have to poured in all their magic, this sealing themselves in from harm of the comet. Knowing that the planet would be inhabitable, they stayed in this alternate dimension. From this we can imagine that for saving the entire dinosaur race, these mages were declared to be the leaders of the society and therefore forming a basis of royalty. Also because they used much of the world's magical resources, even though diminished, only they had the power to unlock the seal and use magic.

While in the real world it would be the settig of a post cold war America. Mario having been discharged from the military with your typical jaded military elite commando attitude. He had left the family as a sign of rebellion to sign up in the army. He regrets that choice since his parents passed away and his younger brother Luigi was left without any parental figure until Mario's tour of duty was finished. Now years after the war, Mario and Luigi runs a barely surviving plumbing business.
Other Characters

Luigi would be protrayed as the polar opposite of Mario. A bit friendlier and opposed to him having less courage than his brother, it's more naivity than fear. He idolizes his brother, still thinking he fought the good fight, even after his brother left the family although Mario doesn't share the same feelings. He always sets out to make a difference in the world, however his overprotective brother doesn't let him out to work too often, thus leaving him much time to spend to himself and the local neighbours.

Bowser: The interesting idea is that the inhabitants of the pocket dimension (herein referred to the PD) evolved to a human form from dinosaurs. I would imagine that instead of evolving into a new form, they instead adapted human forms as secondary form. So they can switch between a human, and a humonoid looking dinosaur (or even pure dinosaur). Bowser in this case, would be considered the general dictator of the PD. He rules with a tyrannical hand with a limited but powerful knowledge of magic. There are other royal houses or clans which are probably powerful enough if united to defeat Bowser, however none of them really want to take the first step to change the status quo. To support the fact that there are some more technological different items in the PD, I imagine like FF6 they relied more on technology rather than the power of magic which leaves even a few select people who are capable of magic be even fewer.

I would imagine that Bowser would have kept King Toadstool alive, to act as a figurehead for the kingdom, but everyone knows but does not admit that he is merely a puppet controlled by Bowser. Like any other tyrannical dictator, Bowser wants more power. Uniting the two worlds, Earth and the PD, not only would give him a fresh new world to take over, but it would break the seal that created the PD thus allowing magic to flow freely again...giving him more power than before. He only needs one royal figure that had slipped from his grasp 18 years ago..

Daisy: Keeping to the idea that she is royalty and taken away from the pocket dimension to prevent the world from merging and thus bringing Earth to it's knees, we will keep the idea that Daisy is whisked away from the PD, and left on the steps at the local orphange. However her upbringing will not be as shining as the movie, as being bumped from foster home to foster home, she has become another victim of the foster home system.

Trouble has always had a knack of finding Daisy, whether being abused or put into foster families that at first seemed nice, but quickly turned otherwise afterwards. Seeing how the system hasn't fixed what she wanted all her life; a sustaining relationship with anyone, she runs off, and is raised on the street, being a drug addict and other questionable activities. She would rather be in a world where she can expect to be used and lied to, than suffer another family that would trick her into a sense of security and safety.

Being of royalty and from the PD, she too has a dinosaur form. Unbeknownst to her, if left uncheck, her dinosaur form will come out when she is mature enough, whether or not she wants too or not. After her 18th birthday, a rash of animal attacks has plagued the city, not knowing that it was her dinosaur side commiting the attacks. Also being of royal blood, she has unrealized and great magical potential.

As for the necklace around her neck, I would have changed to either a ring or a bracelet, seeing how that in her life, she would have sooner tried to have pawned it off for another hit or money. On the bracelet, it would seem that a curse or a safety feature was put onto it...making sure that it never left her side. It would only come off when she was ready to take back the throne of the kingdom that exiled her for safety. That time comes when Luigi first finds her in an alley covered in blood...the blood of her ex-pimp (which she just killed in dinosaur form). The same safety feature that kept the bracelet on her arm, also kept the only small doorway from the PD to Earth shut from Bowser's invading army or those sent to search for her. It is now open.

The King: The King was one of the royal dinsaurs who decended from the mages who created the PD long ago. Ruling his kingdom very well and basically as seen as a leader for even other kingdoms, he is the single entity that keeps the other kingdoms in check for Bowser. If he is eliminated, wars on all fronts would happen for domination of power. I would imagine the king would be much like a manipulated King of many stories. Manipulated by his military advisor, Bowser, he listens to every word and gives him every amount of power to him to do whatever he wants to the citizens of PD. He has great magical powers being a royal, but sadly his mind has been clouded/poisoned from the sayings of Bowser.

A focus of his once great power, was an amulet passed down the generations. Unfortunately that has been easily stolen by Bowser (a gift it seems as he tells the public), thus leaving the king in a weakened state, and Bowser as one of the most powerful magic users in the entire PD.

Yoshi: Yoshi from the game was an innocent dinosaur from the game and I would have it no different in the remake. However also in the game he was basically an invincible weapon, although a bit frightened of certain places, he still was a force to be reckonned with. In this case, I will make him to be to another Royal decendant (although different to the line of Daisy's), but as always full of untapped magical potential. To reason Yoshi to be in dinosaur form PERMANANTLY, we can imagine that Yoshi is actually mentally handicapped. Yes, autistic, mentally retarded, you pick them. However this would describe why he is so under developed, that he is essentially stuck in dinosaur form all the time, without the mental compacity to take on the more complex human form. (We should know this because retarded children of the PD will be born as dinosaurs during delievary. Other babies are born as humans first.)

Also we can express his innocence in such a way where he too is easily enough manipulated and unable to think for himself, although he hates to have hurt other people. However as Bowser uses his magic to control Yoshi and haved him grown to an enormous size (I guess Yoshi will be a T-Rex at this point) he is used as the ultimate weapon against the rebelling nations that seek to bring Bowser's regime down.

Yoshi being a dinosaur with unique abilities to convert troopa shells into flame, flight and earthquakes I have imagined Yoshi having unrealized power and Bowser knowing how to tap into it via his mind control. T herefore making him a fire-breathing, object levitating, and earthquaking causing weapon at his command.

Being only the ONE super weapon that Bowser has, he doesn't want to wage war against Earth with just Yoshi. So as a secondary motive to get back Daisy is to use her and breed the two powerful magic users to create an army of Yoshi's at his disposal.

Goombas: They were a pretty cool design at first. But they were basically idiots. I imagined that instead of being the morons they are, they are instead citizens who have been de-evolved (as in the movie) and sort of shock troopers of the ground attacks. They are like zombies, hard to defeat completely since they have no feeling of their pain, and are basically behemoths who are under Bowser's command, also as serving as basically shields for the rest of Bowser's ground troops.

I'm pretty sure the storyline would end up with one guy training and helping a rebellion to fight off the tyrant and restore peace to the world, so it's pretty boring. But I kind of like the idea of not so much a darker Mario Bros. movie, but a more realistically, less campy version with Mario Bros. Elements.

For any interested parties out there.

I actually don't think they did such a bad job with their review. Though I am kinda miffed that they recently did a Joysticks review since I was going to do that later this month, but hey... what can you do?

Well, counteract with a review for a far worse film, one that's a billion times more obscure. So much so that there's not even an IMDB profile for it. And its coming very soon...
