I'd like some people to buy this. Although it won't affect my purchase (I'll be buying this launch day in Australia, March 2nd) I'd like to hear what people think. Consider this thread the place to do such things.
I'm ridiculously excited about this game. I know for a fact that it will be better than Sonic 360, simply because of how it controls. If anyone here has played the Wii Play minigame with the cows, it controls almost exactly like that.
Ogawa has said in an interview the control is inspired by the simplicty of the original Sonic, as both the Megadrive game and this Wii game use only one button, the jump button.
There are extraneous characters in the plot, but I'm almost positive the only playable character is Sonic, which is how it should be.
Froth with me please.
EDIT: Some relevant links.

Rud13 you've exposed yourself for the negative nancy you are. There is still very much hope for a series if fans continue to give feedback. The more of an Internet Fracas we create about certain games, the more we can impress upon Sega the fact that...
Actually fuck that, I don't even love the original Sonic games on Mega Drive, I'm just really excited about this Wii game. |

Fixed. Sorry about that folks. But that's good, it means that America only has a couple of weeks to play this by themselves.
Funnily enough, this game comes out March 15th in Japan, so even later than the PAL territories. |

108 if I wanted to geniuinely ask you questions about Japan is it better to PM you or make a Forum Axe thread? |

as far as 3D Sonic is concerned, we might term this a last stand. _________________

I was down with this game - It was only the second Sonic game I ever owned (the first was Sonic Adventure 2 - which I honestly didn't think was so terrible, at least in the levels you played as Sonic and Shadow).
I thought Rush was a nice, quick bit of fun, although the boss battles were all a little awkward.
But getting back to the main topic, I have higher hopes for this Sonic game than I've had for any 3D Sonic game - as evidenced by my not purchasing Sonic Heroes, Shadow, or Sonic Next Gen Bastard Fest even though I sort of liked SA2. |

Actually it is, the project lead worked on Sonic Adventure
But actually it isn't, because Sonic Team was three guys who did something good in 1991! |

I don't get how it takes so long for Sonic fans to be kind of resigned to the fact that maybe just maybe their series has kind of fallen from grace or whatever. I mean, this game looks like it could be an okay kind of Sonic Adventure game without the Tails and Big the Cat and Knuckles parts, but it's not really going to be an interesting throwback to back when we had Sonic going really fast through some interesting levels with multiple paths through them.
I'll probably rent it or something, anyways. I kind of gave up on Sonic long ago though. |

Since I believe the embargo is well passed....
I've played two different iterations of the game. The first was last fall, the build they had at E3. It was pretty decent! Controls were kinda weird, but I always allow withhold judgement, at least immediately so, on any Wii games since the controls are going to be (or supposed to be) inherently different, and therefore needs time for adjustment. But the bottom line was that it was playable.
Then I tried out a later build a few months later, this past... I think it was December? Pure crap. Seriously. Why? The controls were exactly the same, it was what they did to the camera.
Previously, the camera was pretty much behind you all the time. Occasionally it would switch to some wacky camera angle automatically to emphasize a particularly death defying move or something, which has been happening since Sonic Adventure 1. And while its always disorienting, all you really had to do was hit forward on the controller and you were more or less good to go.
But the camera angles changes just does not gel with the Wii controls. And I don't think its an instance in which I just need to get used to things, the fucking camera goes all over the place, spins around, goes in & out, pans left & right, etc. Just fucking atrocious. And I wasn't the only one who had problems with it; the Sega PR demo person kept dying and dying and dying because the camera was just out of control. Maybe it was just this one instance, and maybe it'll get fixed. Maybe not.
Oh, and the "motif" was kinda cute, but kinda dumb, with all the characters wearing turbans, and I most certainly am not the kind of person to play the "its culturally insensitive" card. _________________

It looks about as culturally insensitive as Prince of Persia.
Hey, Rud13. Sonic Rush was actually a pretty good game, with a few level design issues. Of course, it was made by DIMPS, so that's why it's actually decent. |

i would just like to point out here that fort90 is wrong. yeah that's right bitch. the camera in the e3 build of sonic and the secret rings did not follow sonic most of the time. it was really crazy and (usually) fixed, and probably what made the graphics so nice to look at. the camera was the one big thing i noticed. and i had played the demo many, many, many numbers of times (i still have the layout memorized in my head). the recent videos of the updated version of the level found in the e3 demo had the same camera angles. so
and also:
<14> <NightsB> the girl who does bomberman music worked on sonic and the secret rings [soundtrack]
<14> <NightsB> fyi of the day
edit: also please everyone try it because it's really not bad :)

Really? Wow, I wanted the game anyway - it it will certainly be purchased as soon as I get a Wii. But now... Jesus, I might have to go find a Wii this month.
Does the Sonic music have that same amphetamine quality of... pretty much every Bomberman music ever? I rock back and forth nervously (and delighted) like I've just consumed twenty cups of coffee whenever Bomberman music is playing. |

I liked the original title, "Sonic Wildfire" so much better than "...and the secret rings."
I wonder if Sonic has garnered so much ill-will over the years that some people won't let themselves get excited about a new one. _________________

well i don't know about her involvement with the BGM of the game, but there seems to be a few levels that have fully-produced vocal tracks as the stage music. i do know for a fact that jun chikuma (the bomberman woman's) has a band that is contributing at least one song. |

Yeah. Her "Band" is an Arab music ensemble.
And "Sonic and the Secret Rings" takes place within the "pages" of the book "1001 Arabian Nights".
So, uhh. I guess if she were doing the soundtrack, it would be fitting, at least. _________________

Ewwww. Yuck. Vocal tracks should not be video game stage music unless you are Power Instinct Matrimelee (enka stage FT-MFing-W). |
