I don't remember how or when I found this, but since our network was down this morning I was poking around old videos I'd previously downloaded, and discovered this awesome French documentary on shmups. I probably found it via insert credit, but it bears repeat mentioning for anyone who didn't notice it then.

It's very exhaustive and impressive, and covers everything from Space Invaders to modern danmaku shmups and doujin shmups.

If you lack mad French skillz, you can get the English subtitle file here, and use it by watching the movie in VLC.

Japanese and Italian subtitles are also available on the translator's webpage.

I also have to emphasize how totally awesome that screenshot is; that's a programmer's test rig for Ibara.

it's a pretty swell documentary aside from the presence of the term "shmup". the narrator also pronounces g-rev as a monosyllable. i'd have liked more focus on doujin developers.

I've seen that.

It was neat to get a glimpse into the offices where shooters are made.

That was great!

I loved that they had ELO playing for some background music. Ive always felt that ELO was the closest to the idea of Sci-Fi in music form, and Shooters always felt like the closest to Sci-Fi ideas in game form.

Yeah this is really excellent, except it's a shame the Japanese voices are all dubbed over... there are few things more irritating than a dub where you can still hear the original voices underneath, and you speak the source language. I am always straining to try to hear them.

I can't help but comment on the music either. It wasn't just ELO's that was playing. It was the Densha Otoko theme song.

And then some... Katamari?!

I would've like to hear more shooter music, I love a lot of that shit.

Great video though, thanks!

Edit: On another note, while Twilight is great, there's another ELO song I really wish had been used for this (or... Densha) - Yours Truly, 2095.

Quote:
I sent a message to another time
But as the days unwind, this I just cant believe
I sent a note across another plane
Maybe its all a game, but this I just cant conceive.

Can you hear me?

I drive the very latest hovercar
I dont know where you are
But I miss you so much till then
I met someone who looks a lot like you
She does the things you do
But she is an ibm.

If you haven't heard it, you're missing out.

Edit 2: What was the song that came on while they were talking about Cave stuff, specifically it came on right around when Ibara was mentioned.

It's not the Densha Otoko theme song, it's the Daicon IV theme song! The Densha Otoko OP is just a second-rate ripoff of/homage to Daicon IV!

Daicon IV is one of my favorite things ever. Please watch it.

ELO is better than any shooters theme song! And Schild, ELOs entire album Time works for any shooter, not just Yours Truly, 2095.

Oh no question, Yours Truly just gets no play - anywhere.

Mushihimesama's "Like the night of the falling stars" (stage 4 bgm) is such a good track that people that don't even know there are Shoot'em ups out there like it nevertheless.

I don't know any other tracks from any Shoot'em up-soundtracks that could pull off the same stunt.
That said, I really enjoy some ELO every now and then.
