what? nobody's talking about the trico (now The Last Guardian) shown at e3?

ok, i'll start. it was basically the same video we've seen, but with what seems to be the actual graphics of the game and with an enemy confrontation that i think it's new. it looked amazing and i think this may be the best graphics we've seen yet on PS3. the fight looked pretty ico-ish.

I like how differently the boy and creature are rendered.

yes, it is an interesting choice.

this trailer looks a good bit better than the unpolished version. I wonder which is more indicative of what we'll be getting? did they polish it up when they discovered it had leaked, or is this what the game looks like now?

i think it would be ridiculous to announce a game at e3 with a shiny video and then release the game with much crappier graphics. i believe this is how the game will look.

I think he's wondering if it will end up looking better or if this new video is in fact, the final engine.

In reality, the engine is probably done as far as textures and all of the main visible assets like that. They will probably tweak the lighting and shaders right to the end.

did you miss how the leaked video was stated to be a proof of concept video shown internally like a year ago?

that's what they say, but I find it a little weird that the E3 trailer would be basically the same footage were that the case.

what the fuck am I even arguing about, this is easily the game I'm looking forward to the most, despite not owning a PS3.

Well, maybe they aren't ready to blow the doors off the game just yet. Showing it at all is plenty. That video on youtube has over 1 million viewings. That same video is also a perfect preview of the game without really showing you anything and preserving the mystery. So they just re-rendered it in the most current version of the engine. TA DA! E3 fodder.

Maybe the ending will just be the boy and his blob walking into the sunset. Could imagine that to be the ultimate goal of the game, lots of implications of a prison or labyrinth these two are caught in.

ok I just finally watched the video in 720p and the last 30 seconds are actually all new. Lighting is greatly improved and overall the game's look is like Ico in HD. The labrynth/city scape looks much better. They took a lot of color out of the sky, which is kind of a bummer. Everything looks more like it belongs together now, but hopefully they figure out a way to make some slightly more colorful skies that don't ruin the look.

The lighting could still stand to be tweaked a lot more. Some objects still suffer from the shimmery unstable quirk that a lot of current gen shadow work suffers from. I think RE5 is the only recent game that had shadow work that didn't distract me at some point.

apparently the Japanese title, 人喰いの大鷲トリコ, means something like "The Man-eating Bird Trico".

if if that's a working title, it's awesome.

though I love Ueda games, I am super tired of the artstyle. This is why I was somewhat disappointed in the look of the new trailer. It went from evoking memories of Heart of Darkness(In all of the awkwardly-rendered 3d glory that those memories represent) to just looking like another Ueda game.

i'm not quite tired of it, myself, but it would be nice to see colors that are not grays and greenish grays

especially if those other colors were more greens

Fumito Ueda wrote:
Interacting with your griffin-ish friend is not going to be smooth going from start to finish, however. "The eagle does not simply follow all of your directions," Ueda said. "Throwing something that catches his interest will get him to move -- you aren't working with him and giving him orders, but you're more taking advantage of his natural behavior. Sometimes, you'll need him to sit still in order to finish a section, but he'll run off on you instead. He's not all that smart, and he won't necessarily do what the player wants all the time."

This is good. They faked this with Yorda in Ico in a couple scenes, and gave her the ability to at least look at things unrelated to the player. That was one of the first things that struck me about that particular game. Argo didn't have much along those lines, but his control was always deliberately imprecise on account of, you know, him being separate from the player. I'm glad they're really expanding on this.

What can I say, washed out colors and too much bloom plus a few more filters isn't exactly the most viable aesthetic. After 2 games it's already played out.

the old video is CG concept art, the new video is a scene by scene reconstruction in engine. i think it's very promising to see that Ueda can now realize his imagination so exactly within the limitations of medium & engine. here are some rough comparisons i made, old vs new. informative i think even though the camcorder bootleg is super washed out (click for big)

Tulpa wrote:

what do you mean? the only sense of viable coherent here is "workable, practicable, esp. economically or financially," (OED). yet the "aesthetic" (and i think it's wrong to identify the visual appearance of stills with the whole of a videogame's aesthetic) is thusly quite viable, building as it does on Team Ico's past experience, artistically & technically. the latter is especially true because how much can they do if they must strip the musculature from the bones every game. maybe you don't appreciate it, but stylistic coherence in real-time rendering is a huge amount of work

Tulpa wrote:

this is ridiculous, is the slow & careful refinement of one's craft, valid in any other medium, somehow off limits to videogames?

Does this game have enough characters in it so Ueda can have his next project be some sort of Ueda Smash Bros. game?

Are the colossi not characters anymore? :(

Does anyone have any hints of actual gameplay that we're gonna get? I hate idle speculation.

They would have to have their own fighting game since most are like 400 feet high, or fly.

Im talking Ico vs. Wanda vs. Queen vs. Trico Kid

Dream Mix TV Fighters had Optimus Prime, Solid Snake and Bomberman fighting it out.

I'm sure they could make some SD Colossi. Maybe some "Kid Kollosuss" characters.

Think Sentinel from Marvel vs. Capcom! Absurd stats, takes up the whole lefthand side of screen...maybe you get a system exactly like Marvel v Capcom, but they can only be used as assist characters?

Or maybe, you build the whole game around them! Screw everything else; I want colossi on colossi action! If SF2 was about big dudes in small arenas, think HUMONGOUS dudes in puny arenas.

Concerning Ueda's art style...at least the bastard has one, and at least it's good! Would we rather have a Mikami, jumping from style to style, or a Nomura, with a style is just shit? Or hell, just another Tolkien ripper-offer? It's distinctive and noticeable, without endangering the gameplay. It's a game design homerun. Ain't broke, don't fix it.

ever play War of the Monsters for the PS2? you've got a Godzilla clone, a King Kong clone, an Ultraman clone, a floating eyeball thing, a robot and a few others beating each other up in fully destructible cities
