To quote a friend on another forum: "It's going to be hard knowing that every step you take in that game is leading that animal closer to its inevitable plot-driven death."

Guys, seriously, killing the character and then OH WAIT NO HE'S OKAY is actually more dishonest than just killing the character.

Which is just another way of saying that I don't think much of Fable 2, and I think even less of the postscripts to both Ico and SotC.

what if it's what happened?

Then it's very unfortunate that the story you've chosen to tell has been irradiated by storytellers less skilled than you are.

I realize that I'm coming down a bit unnecessarily hard on this one issue, but I kind of feel the same way about playing the Death Of An Ally card as some people feel about using rape for the purposes of drama. You've got to be really careful if you're going to attempt it, or it comes off feeling gratuitous. The sort of bait-and-switch that Ico and SotC pulled might have been okay if only one of 'em had done it, but the plot device as a whole has suffered from its mishandling.

There's also the issue that videogames as a whole are a little too dependent on the idea that "life and death" are the only two meaningful outcomes for any given dramatic situation. Your enemies are always trying to kill you, only you get to kill them first!!

It's narratively lazy. There should be room for conflicts in our stories that do not hinge entirely on one's immediate survival.

I love Ueda's stuff too, but I think crying foul over spoilers at this point is a bit much.
