I noticed that some people were pissed that Mario's Super Picross was on the Japanese virtual console.
Also
I remembered seeing the solutions to some of the puzzles way back when in Nintendo Power.
Thus
I bought the one American Picross release, Mario's Picross (On B&W GB). It's great.
Like a cross between mindsweeper and Sodeku, but with a payoff when you finish a puzzle (it's a picture).
So
I finished all 180~ puzzles.
Therefore
I made payment on the just released (in japan) Picross DS
My first import

Technically my first import was a Dragon Ball Z game for the SNES. Though, at the time I didn't know it was an import, a friend of mine traded me for it and he had dug out grooves into the back of the cart. I mean, I knew it wasn't a US cart, or even english, but it never occured to me until I started importing PS1 games that it was an import. I can't recall my first PS1 import anymore. _________________

Ikaruga for the DC. That's right: I was a part of NCS' biggest-selling single game ever. And in order to play it, I had to buy a boot disc for my DC. And it was worth every penny I paid. Every one.
Odd that it can still be found in stock at a lot of places, can't it? I'm honestly *glad* that enough were made that the Radiant Silvergun Syndrome didn't repeat. I hope that the response that Treasure received to this game was gratifying to them.
Since then, I've bought Zero Gunner 2 (the Drekore budget release), Border Down, Under Defeat, and it seems like there's one more, but I could be wrong. Don't think I've been disappointed yet, but I'm awfully picky. And cheap. |

i've been playing picross ds. it's clearly aimed at a more casual audience, but for its lack of mario it's still pretty charming. the easy stages look like the inside of an ipod, but the normal stages all have their own unique graphics and sounds. and the pictures are animated. and colored in, like guru logic champ. the dpad and stylus control works well for me. _________________

I have never imported any game but I do love me some Picross. far more rewarding than boring Sudoku. and better design balance than Minesweeper.
actually, what the hell, maybe I'll import a Picross game for my first time too. what's some good ones on DS? |

9th grade, I got interested in Final Fantasy V, a local game store yanked the tabs out of my SNES with pliers, and I was off to the races with a Japanese-English dictionary and quite a lot of persistence. Also got Romancing SaGa on the same receipt. Boy that was a mistake. Never figured out what the hell I was doing in Romancing SaGa. This is all circa 1994, maybe 1995.
I did enjoy Final Fantasy V, though, and having later replayed it in English, I realize I didn't miss much in not understanding it.
But what I really wanted to say is: holy shit there's a Picross DS? |

Does you say no to drugs, juicy j can't gaming material count (books by artists and such)? If so, I got a couple books back in the late 80s/early 90s. It didn't excite me as much as importing stuff does today though. Actually, I did get some famicom stuff way back in the day from my dad, he'd bring it back from Japan. Still, wasn't very exciting. I think you have to be older than 8 or 9 to really appreciate "importing" something. I couldn't have pointed out Japan back then on a map and the only anime I'd seen was some Ranma or Kimagure or something. I can't even remember. :(
Why the fuck is "non...game" translating to land orca? Ya know, just because it's a really arrogant term doesn't mean it can't be used reasonably. |

The first foreign game I bought from someone was Soccer (from Tonkin House) for the Gameboy ... somewhere around 1993. Great game ... and it didn't occur to me back then that I had an import-game.
The first game I imported myself is Katamari Damacy ... followed by Rez (jap.), ESPgaluda, Code Age Commanders, Steambot Chronicles and R-TYPE FINAL (jap.) ... more to come, I suppose.
Anyway, I really loved Picross 1+2 on my GB ... the day I decide to actually buy a DS, that might be worth a try. _________________

Spiderman vs the X-Men on the SNES. Actually, it was a present, but I really didn't like it.
The stupid thing is that it was made in the UK, and didn't come here until several months after the US release. Fucking Nintendo. |

| King of Fighters EX2. After waiting forever and a half for the first game to come out here, I decided I wasn't going to make the same mistake twice (althought I never did buy that one--good thing, too). |

Mine was the Evangelion game for the N64. I saw it sitting in the exhibit hall of Anime Expo in 1999 and knew that it had to be mine. I mean, Eva on an N64! What could they have possibly done? Everything before that was just dating sim-styled visual novels but here was an actual videogame with mecha battling action!
I ended up paying something like $120 for it including the adapter to play it on my US N64 since I was too afraid to mod it with a heated screwdriver or something. Still, one of the most frustratingly amusing games I've ever played, mostly because it tied so closely to the anime. My friends and I even practiced tapping our index and middle fingers in rhythm on the desks during classes to train for the absurdly hard C- and B button mashing necessary to break an AT field in Very Hard mode. Then there was the great and completely broken fun we had when a rumor on the Gamefaqs forum that said there was an incomplete 2 player versus mode hidden in the game turned out to be true. Man, those three swings from Eva Unit 0 with the Lance of Longinus meant instant death, breaking AT fields and being way too long to dodge with any Angel or Eva - that mode was so completely unbalanced, ridiculously slow, and just a whole lot of fun.
I think I only owned about 5 games for my N64, now that I think about it. :/ _________________

I have never imported, though I did rent a copy of Radiant Silvergun (!!) from a local anime/manga/Japanstuff shop in '98 or '99, and a Japanase edition of Sonic 3 came into my possession while I was working at Funcoland around that time. We couldn't buy back imports, so the guy just gave it to me. _________________

As a PAL user I have to import almost everything now both for massive price savings and missing year upon year long delays.
I think my first was Suikoden 3 back in 02 after the PAL release was cancelled and I'd loved the first two. Christ was I disappointed. |

| The first game I ever "imported" was a copy of Konami MSX Mega Collection for the Saturn. I bought it in an EBgames for $12, back when they still had import games. That was one of the best $12 I've ever spent on a video game. |

My cousin had a bunch of imported SFC games, like FFV and that one mecha dodgeball game from Banpresto and this one hard brawler where you suddenly sprout golden armor or something.
But I didn't end up importing until Ouendan came out. :/
I should get around to importing Lumines II when it hits the Japanese streets. _________________

This sounds like a marvelous plan. I can't stomach the one we have here in the US.
This is the exact same thing that made me hate Amplitude, but still love Frequency on the PS2. I really tried to like Amplitude, too. _________________

The first import stuff I got was a Twin Famicom and a bunch of ?-in-1 carts back in the NES days. I was predestined by my mother.
The first game that I bought, though, was either Pocket Fighter or MSHvsSF, both for Saturn. Between that and the Famicom stuff, the import scene was non-existent to me.
I think the last game I imported was I.Q.Mania for PSP.
I'm on the fence on Orbital and SoundVoyager, though! Anyone think I should get them? _________________

Yeah, it is only unlocked on the second playthrough for some reason though. It adds rather little to the game, though it does give a friend something to do while watching you play.
The box art is indeed the main advantage to the Region 2 edition! |
