Oh man.

Oh man ohmanohman.

Way to spur me back onto this visual novel/date sim crap, haircute. Way to go. I'm actually thinking about looking around for those Tokimemo 2 discs now. You know, the ones that there were way too many of, to accommodate that 'Emotional Voice System' thing?

EVS is the thing that allowed the girls to pronounce your name, right? Why did it require many different discs? And how did the EVS work, anyway?

I always wanted to try it out so I could make the girls say rediculous things.

I'm not totally sure on how it works, but I think basically the discs were loaded with tons of sound samples, so that when you entered your name, it would just string the soundbyte syllables together according to whichever character's voice. It has a limited capability though, in that you need to think around Japanese syllables, and spell things out like that, phoenetically. Which isn't relaly all that limited, I guess! Just gives everything a strong Japanese accent.

The quality seems too high for that method; you would hear unnatural pauses or stress changes between the syllables. And it made you wait like 10 seconds for the name to be generated; it wouldn't take that long to just look up sound samples off the CD. I'm pretty sure it's AI voice generation a la Microsoft Narrator. And the game took so many disks just because of all the hi-res artwork and voice-acted dialogue.

Hmm, okay! What I know of the game's workings is only from hazily memorized discussions, though if the game's innards are that high-end, yeah I'll stop thinking about getting it and just do it.
