I am convinced as if contacted by God Himself that Symphony of the Night will be hitting XBLA this week,* almost as if the Konami gods were listening. I'm starting this thread now, in anxious preparation, so we can all share images and thoughts of replaying this beloved title in various states of next-gen splendor.

Original or smooth graphics? Stretchy widescreen or 4:3? I've already played this game 2.5 times yet GOD I CAN'T WAIT

*As evidenced below, I was wrong

This will be my first time playing Symphony at all, seeing as I never owned a PS1. Looking forward to seeing what the fuss is all about.

I started playing again just hours ago with the intent to finally beat it.
This time the inverted castle will not get the best of me.

Find the Shmoo. Kill enough of them to get the Crissaegrim. Nothing should ever get the best of you in that game ever again.

The only problem is that it feels a lot like cheating.

this is as opposed to the alucard shield + shield rod, which iirc the game makes it pretty difficult for you to miss.

Found that my first time through, purely by chance. I was lucky that I decided to put it away (because it felt cheap), otherwise it would have ruined the game.

Yeah, same here. I think I busted it out for Galamoth though.

Crissaegrim, Shield Rod / Mablung Sword + Alucard Shield, Osafune Katana, Rapier and Were Bane (these last two from the normal castle) are the weapons to avoid if you don't want to break the game's challenge.

I'd recommend the Chakram (dropped by Discus Lord; two discs that act like boomerangs, can be thrown to different sides) or the Muramasa (dropped by Vandal Sword; starts REALLY weak, evolves as blood spit on Alucard and has a cool normal attack) as weapons of choice. All the Alucart equipments (+30 luck bonus) + Ring of Ares (+24 atk, -24 def) in a 99 luck game can be fun too.

Do not forget this!

Does luck just effect item drops and so forth? (Dumb question, but it has been 5 years or so since I last played. Christ, time flies.)

aye, i wonder if PSX copies will go down in price when this gets released on XBA.

i feel this game suffers from radiant silvergun syndrome. i mean there are 42 copies of it on ebay (when i checked the other day) and at least half were the "non-greatest hits" version. so why are they all going $50-70 used??

Does no one else find the crappy gray screen borders offputting? Far preferable to a stretched out dithered mess, but not preferable to a good-looking "normal" version. I mean it doesn't work this way with other PS1 downloads does it?

Border options would be nice, yes. Of course, actual widescreen support would be nicer. They's doin' it for PSP, ain't they?

I reiterate:

FUCK THEM FOR FUCKING UP FUCKING KONAMI WEEK NOOOOOO

Look for the long hallway in the upper left portion of the map that's nothing but spikes on the ceiling and floor, dude. There's a grating there that can only be passed with the mist form.

I'm pretty sure you need the spike breaker armor before you can get through that hallway.

I'm pretty sure there's a grate to pass through in the Library.

Yeah, I'll trust Predator Goose on this one because I've been in that spike hallway and there was nothing I could do there. I figured I needed bat form to get through.

No, actually you'll need the Spike Breaker armor and the mist form. there's a grate halfway through the hallway and trying to change from a bat to mist will put you in a lot of hurt. Never forget the hallway though, it's pretty important.

Late last night I picked up my paused game of Super Castlevania IV for the Wii's VC and plowed through Slogra, Gaibon and Death in one sitting. As I crossed that rocky expanse, lanterns suddenly bursting alight in front of me, I felt a bit of a tingle; I knew what was coming, despite not having played this game in many, many years.

And yes, here it is. The music here can only be described as beautiful. So minimal and chilling. I love watching the clouds scud by as I steel myself for the inevitable encounter with Dracula.

The place you want to go to progress the game is in the library. There's also a grate with some stuff in it that you can go through now at the bottom of the outer wall.

Castlevania 4

this is probably the most well done lead-up to dracula ever

i mean you get past that tower with the huge, spiked gear following you, hop your way up the diagonally floating platforms, and come into the next structure. the music is an insane harpsichord and weird, distorted strings. you can see twilight-ish colors outside the window. and you feel so high up - like you're actually above the layer of clouds.

you take on slogra, then gaibon, and then climb up the steps into a sort of dingy, theatrical room where death appears, complete with unnerving after-images.

after death is finished, the music just stops. the pathway above opens, and as you pass the first statue, a flame appears near it and the music starts up again. only, this time, it's the theme from the prologue movie - dracula's theme.
the final fight itself isn't difficult, and his "second form" is just him with a skull for a face, but i have yet to see a game in the series that matches that level of forboding, anticipatory ambience.

FKW2007 FTW!

FKW 2007 - Castlevania IV ending

My cellphone camera flipped me the bird as I was trying to snap an image of Dracula burning in the sunlight.

And Diplo, you are so right. The battle wasn't difficult, but man, did all the atmosphere make it something special.

Castlevania IV has made me fall in love with games all over again.

I really dislike them as well. I have no real REASON to buy the XBLA version, since I can just pop my PSX disc into any of my Playstation 1/2/3 systems and enjoy. Still, I was getting kind of antsy to pay MS Points for it anyway. The borders alone may cause me not to buy it.

As for "other PS1 downloads", if you're asking about the Playstation Store downloads on PS3, they do a pretty good job. Well, other than the fact that you can't play it on your PS3 and you need a PSP instead. But the PSP screen options are consistent in giving three choices - original, a slightly larger version that is formatted quite nicely for the PSP screen, and a full stretch mode. The middle option is a very nice compromise between stretched to hell and the large amount of dead space in "original". Oh, the original and new medium/normal versions do letterboxing by putting black on the left and right of the screen. Just plain black nothing, like a rotated version of widescreen movie letterboxing. No gimmicky annoying side art, thank god.

Wait, SotN has challenge? I love the game, but it's pretty damn easy even if you just go through normally and don't look for any items. I did that my first time through and got to 190%+ pretty easily.

I really enjoyed Dracula's warping animation in Castlevania IV. I enjoyed the whole battle, even if it wasn't terribly difficult, but that animation was really great.

Shit I kind of want to play this game right now...but I'm at work.

I found that grate in the long library, but I had to check a guide to find it. I never realized that the save room in there had two exits. The map doesn't not help much when trying to find rooms that have exits that you haven't gone through yet. :(

I tried to fight Richter and got my ass handed to me after I got the bat form.

Well, I finished it just after FKW. Man it sure was fun. Probably one of the most broken games in my collection. Now it could come out on Live in December for all I care.

Also, is the ending song some kind of joke? Or is it just bad?

The PSX version came out Thursday, October 2nd, 1997. October 2nd, 2007 lands on a Tuesday this year... Hmmm...

Wait, who worked on the SotN OST? Most people just credit it as solely Michiru Yamane, but I'm hearing that Yamaoka, Motoaki Furukawa, and even Shoichiro Hirata did some stuff?
