Hey guys. I played Portrait of Ruin for about an hour and I liked it. I also played Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness all the way through and liked it more than Harmony of Dissonance. I ALSO finished Castlevania 64 and really enjoyed the Dracula battle. Circle of the Moon was pretty good too. Curse of Darkness was just ok.
Metal Gear Solid told me that I like Castlevania, but why is it that I can't stand Dawn of Sorrow?
Also Castlevania IV is much, much better than Bloodlines.
Who's with me?!

I don't have a pet series, but damned if I didn't love Skies of Arcadia despite all the "What The Fuck Is This Shit" moments it put me through. I mean, even aside from the totally obnoxious battles and what have you, there were also purely aesthetic elements that I found downright repulsive. And yet it suckered me right in with its "flying through the sky in an airship discovering the world" bullshit. I just fell for that in a big way.
I think what ajutla mentioned about liking the idea of something so much that you're willing to put up with the faults of the real thing was a pretty astute observation about how powerful just the pure idealistic model of a thing can be. It really dictates one's taste in everything, not just videogames. I listen to The Minutemen because I like the idea of The Minutemen every bit as much as I dig their actual music. I Enjoy eating Italian food because I like the idea of Italian food every bit as much as the taste. We post on these forums because we like the idea of them, much more than the reality, which was readily apparent when the IC boards finally went under and there were all the discussions about how to reconstruct the community. |

The series that I love and will tolerate crappy games is...
Legacy of Kain.
Seriously, WTF is Blood Omen 2? They took the exploration of Soul Reavers 1 and 2, shat on it, and then proceeded to shit all over easy to control characters and good looking graphics.
However, for continuities sake and to understand the whole Hyldan thing, the damn game needed to be played.
At least Defiance was good.
Seriously, when is their next game coming out? _________________ "Say, that's a nice fez!"

I'm surprised I haven't seen a remake of Simon's Quest. That game could benefit from being made big. It was already an amazing, sprawling mess at the time it was released. I was always lost in that game since you couldn't trust any information from the villagers. |
This may interest you. Its a pseudo-remake of Castlevania II, although a lot of stuff was changed. I played through a slightly earlier version of it years ago and it was really good and satisfying. Unfortunately you have to grind a lot (why do fucking homebrew game authors force people to do this?) and before you gain a level you end up fighting a boss, which is crazy because you usually do it on accident and are on the verge of death when you fight them. Still good though. |
