What ho! I'm a bit of a UK retro-gaming pseud, with but a PS2 and a graphics card of similar vintage for gaming. Apart from that I'm a pretty OK guy. Been listening to the podcast since the third episode or so and signed up to the forums because I had something desperately urgent to add to an Abe's Oddysee thread. By the time I received my confirmation email I'd actually read the rest of the topic, found my point superfluous, worked my frustrations out via street-fighting and moved on to something else equally urgent. I do still think that the device of placing the game in flashback, implicitly casting all failures as false recollections is inspired.
I get slightly curmudgeonly about the culture's rewriting of all Eighties gaming everywhere as an exclusively Americo-Japanese led console experience, Supermarionation if you will, but recognise that the previous parochial narrative of "all the nerdy kids in the playground played Jet Set Willy on their Spectrum" is no less false. This recent webcomic and its brief accompanying post make my point a million times better than I could though.
Otherwise, I love how ubiquitous emulation has made it possible to play bizarro (con)versions of favourite games, I read Penny Arcade for the articles and I'm trying real hard to be the max-level shepherd. |
