By merging threads A & B do you mean
1) append B in order to A and delete B
OR
2) interleave A & B into one thread by post time (so it might go A1 A2 B1 A3 B2 etc)
Either should be pretty easy. |
why not do 1 by default and put a check box for 2 or something? so you could just slap all of B to the end A, or you could interleave them (I think it might make the most sense just to sort the posts by date entered instead of just shuffling them) |
I realize I'm probably asking a lot, but I think a "preview" button would be essential for something like this to be really effective... _________________

2 is how it's done with simplemachines' software. gets the job done.
in a more meticulous and possibly headache-inducing approach you could have a checkbox per post and add posts in a few at a time or something. _________________ kirakira no yume no naka de / bokutachi wa yakusoku wo shita ne

Mods, I've added a merge thread feature. In the mod panel, check any number of threads and click Merge. On the next page, you can limit the merge to specific posts from each thread (by default all are merged). Threads that have all their posts merged are deleted (because they are now empty). Threads with some posts remaining (because you unchecked them) aren't.
Would a mod try it out soon to double check that I made no errors installing it? Thanks. _________________

It'd also be awesome if I want to quote multiple people in one post, without having to punch "Quote" in another window, copy that junk into the other post I'm writing, then close the extra window. Just have it toss the post in at the bottom of the Quick Reply window whenever I hit "Quote" on one. That'd rule. _________________

dude, that's great and it's actually like a lower-tech version of my drag and drop idea (drag any post into the quick reply box to quote it)
so the quote button could just make the text pop into the quick reply box, huh...? (like how the potions used to make the hearts go up without reloading the page/going to another page or anything annoying like that) |

okay I'm starting a new poll here so I can get a more accurate non-axe-centric up-to-date feel for what people think about them.
I don't mind them either way. I like a lot of stuff about the idea but feel fine without it. _________________

| Is it possible to get an embed tag that automatically embeds youtube videos from simply the regular link, as opposed to editing the provided embed code from the youtube page? Auto-embedding would clog up threads pretty easily, but a way to simplify embedding videos when wanted would be a great help. |

got this working on my test forum. problem is quick reply isn't ready to replace full reply. should i add another quote button? will this be too cluttered / confusing?

problem is all embeds are autoemeds. it's just what the embed tag does. youtube & other video players start paused by default but they're still running. i could check youtube URLs and try to lop off any autoplay[equals]1, but other video players will have other options and none of this prevents you from embedding midis or whatever. another possibility is a user option that turns all embeds into links. you couldn't watch videos inside threads at all then, but you'd never get surprises either.

this could be done, but there are reasons to link and not embed youtube videos and automatically replacing youtube URLs may be too strong _________________

I guess you could add a Quick Quote button, at least as a stopgap measure. Maybe make it look notably different than the normal quote button to avoid confusion? _________________

Given the number of sale threads we have how about a Select Button Market Place (users only) where we can post items up for sale. Items deleted when a time limit set by the poster is reached.
Maybe even put a little For $ale sign (earthbound reference optional) next to a poster's name who is currently selling a thing. _________________ Mixtapes galore ~ VG MUSIC

birdcloud, have you considered my Work Safe button idea yet? It could just be a button that turns all non-avatar images and embeds into links, so that people browsing at work could keep their jobs while allowing me my god-given right to post pictures of dick nipples and soundtrack them with Phillip Glass. I still think having some kind of tagging system for images and videos would be good, though, since making all images into links doesn't really tell someone if those links were ever work safe or not. _________________ "Godzilla could be anyone."

| I seem to have a problem with the Quick Reply box. Most of the time whenever I try to submit a post from it, the browser starts working (my cursor icon changes and a loading bar appears) but essentially hangs. It will load indefinitely and will never finish. If I wait long enough and just reload the page, I see my post has appeared. If I choose to preview my post, it loads instantly and I can post normally. This happens in both Opera and Firefox, on different computers, and from both home and work. Sometimes it works, most of the time it doesn't. I'm not sure what the problem is. Any ideas? |

Quick reply only passes text through to the posting.php script; any stalling with quick reply would have happened just the same with the full reply page. Thing is phpBB simply isn't well designed software. After a post has been successfully put into the database, phpBB goes on to add every word in the post into an index used for searching. This involves dozens of string replace functions which have to run over the body of your post again & again and then finally a couple mass inserts into said indices, which can easily get locked out if someone else is posting at about the same time. And of course, because phpBB uses the MyISAM engine with MySQL, the entirety of the post tables are locked while all this is going on. Post at a busy time and long long waits are, sadly, normal behavior. _________________

Yeah, when I was given the keys to to the SB realm because dreamhost was bitchy and 500 errors kept showing, the first thing I found out was that the search table had grown beyond human reason. Clearing it out (I erased all indexes up to 3 letters) speed up posts a bit, mas it's just a finger in a ever-filling dam. But if you're actively dicking with the forum software, you could change the way the search is implemented. Just filtering out the smaller words will speed things up. _________________
