Way back in Aug '05 I posted some screenshots from my playthrough of SH1 on ePSXe. So...uh...here they are again. I think that I caught a few good screens!

I honestly think the low-res polys and textures contributed a lot to the overall ambience of the game itself. Didn't some famous dead dude once say something along the lines of "letting the reader's/viewer's/player's imagination fill in the blanks is more powerful then doing it yourself." Or something like that.

That would be why they added a filter effect (that could not be turned off until after the first playthrough) to the PS2 SHs.

I played through Silent Hill on ePSX, mostly so I could have an FAQ open in one monitor. Its amazing how scary the game looks despite the low polygon count. At the same time, the game is often unfairly criticized for using fog and darkness to hide the graphic engine's weaknesses. The game maintains a surprisingly high polygon count for a PS1 game.

It easily looks every bit as good as Metal Gear Solid, but no one ever criticizes that engine.

Just the same, would it have played better with pre-rendered environments?

I think not. I heard once that photoshopped images don't look convincing unless they make every element the same low resolution as the lowest-res element on the image. Likewise, the dramatic contrast between the perfectly pre-rendered back drops and the garbly PS1 rendered characters would've made it all seem phoney.

MGS tricked people into thinking there was no draw distance by use of the overhead camera though.

They didnt even have to use fog effects and could just let stuff pop up because you were never actually looking in the direction of loading polygons.

Also, the 1st Silent Hill is really good, but the monkeys and bats in the outdoor areas always killed the mood for me. It went from a horror game to an action game something quick. Was still fun though...
The first time I was in an outdoor area after nightfall (through that creepy house at the beginning) I just stood there cause I was afraid of something jumping out at me if I moved forward. Once I saw the dogs running at me in the distance, I was like "oh..." and just started running/dodging like a RE game.

Also, also, Pre-rendered backgrounds would have detracted from the evnironments a lot. RE was never scarry and that might have been a big part of it. Seems more like you are watching a story than actually playing something interactive when the BGs dont move. And tank controls...

Those screenshots are gorgeous. The art direction in the game is what really sold its atmosphere, regardless of technical limitations. It's nice to play a Japanese-based game where no one is running around in holographic body armour, and where the main character isn't, say, squaring off against a resurrected version of his dad. While playing sports. Or something.

I'm saying, Konami made the most American game they could here, and that counts for a lot.

Weren't all the objects made by only one man? I think I read that somewhere...

And that game is totally awesome emulated....

Well it might have looked better, but it certainly wouldn't have played better.

Actually, I first played Silent Hill on ePSXe on my old Sony laptop on an airplane.

When I got home I immediately started playing on the actual console.

Am I the only one that prefers SH2 and SH3 to the first? I didn't finish the first SH but aside from the amazingly terrifying opening I thought it was just pretty tough and annoying. Story wasnt interesting to me at all and even back in 1998 it looked pretty bad to me.

Oh hell no. It's my impression around here that SH1 is mildly interesting but SH2 is the cream of the crop. I'm about the only one that really loves SH3. Silent Hill one's plot is pretty god damn stupid, and it doesn't feature the 2d control scheme which causes all sorts of problems.

this looks surprisingly good for a ps1 game. stuff on that tends to age more horribly than almost any other platform.

Yeah, playing through this game right now.

It seems ePSXe can't do lens flare!

I like SH3 after you gave me some good reasons to try it again.

Heather is so sassy!

I just finished up Silent Hill 2! I'll post about it in my thread when I can think clearly. I'm trying to decide whether I want to run through SH3 again (Seriously this would be like time 8.)
