|
|
I spent an hour translating this thread which had originated on 2ch.net into English for some reason; I'm fucking out of my mind. The original thread this was translated from can be found archived here. Posts made by other posters have been put in orange to clarify things. I've taken the liberty of trimming out a few of the excess responses too, but for the most part it's all here.
Warning: this is long. And somewhat pointless. And did I mention long?
Unfortunately, as the board doesn't let me embed Youtube videos, you'll have to click the video links to see videos.
It starts out sort of stupid, but wait till you get to post 22.
I only realized this after I bought my Wii
1 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:26:28.93 ID:iiDuccro0
But I don't actually own a TV...
4 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:30:14.95 ID:iiDuccro0
Come to think of it I think we bought a TV a few years ago, we just never actually used it much.
Gonna go dig it out of the closet real quick.
6 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:31:29.55 ID:iiDuccro0
TV acquired!
I think I can make this work.
7 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:32:04.80 ID:iiDuccro0
All right, hooking it up
9 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:36:04.09 ID:iiDuccro0
My room!
I've got both a little girl AND a huffy one in here, you know?
10 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:39:20.86 ID:iiDuccro0
Damn, I wanted to hook it up using the component cable, but this TV only has composite inputs...
[ed: okay, so the original Japanese said "D video connector", but we don't have that shit here on this side of the pond, so component cable it is.]
11 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:41:52.73 ID:iiDuccro0
Got the Wii hooked up!
And geez, the Wii is humoungous.
This ain't of the scale of the PS3!
12 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:45:18.24 ID:iiDuccro0
Setting it all up.
The sensor bar? You put it on top of the TV, of course, it's common sense.
13 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:47:25.37 ID:iiDuccro0
Hey, it's coming up
14 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:49:37.53 ID:iiDuccro0
Check out those high-res graphics!
GK can't say shit to this [this is a 2ch game board in-joke, don't worry about it]
15 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:53:56.16 ID:iiDuccro0
Let's play Warioware!

19 :VIP足軽q :2006/12/05(火) 23:56:29.67 ID:iiDuccro0

That TV costs more than the Wii itself, hahaha
[ ed: it doesn't show the price now that the product is out of stock, but that TV cost something along the lines of 30,000 yen, compared to the Wii's retail price of 25,000 ]

That may be so, but I'll be dammed if the thread poster doesn't have you beat by a mile. Insanely awesome is what it is I tells ya.
Even more interesting are other posters' reactions. I always love getting these glimpses into foreign BBS culture, especially when it seems that relating PS3 jokes to everything isn't simply a western phenomenon. |

That's because they originated from the same site! I'm pretty sure this thread was born out of the VIP boards on 2ch. The VIP boards are sort of like a Japanese version of SA, for the lack of a better description. |

I refuse to leave just leave it as broken Japanese English like that when comprehensible English works just as well. It's a "windshield", not a "front glass"; a "rear-view mirror", not a "back mirror"; and I most certainly live in a "condo", not a "mansion", thank you. |

The point he is making is the "TV GET!" is internet slang that you would also find on a western message board. _________________

CanadianEd is I'm sure aware of this, and he knows what he's doing. In Japanese "something GET" is not Internet slang but a common phrase found everywhere, so the correct translation is to a common phrase in English.
There are three separate words involved here. The common English verb "get", the Japanese suru-verb-stem "GET" (also written as katakana getto), and the English Internet slang "Get!" imitating the Japanese grammar. Since each word has distinct meaning or connotations, proper translation requires more than simply following the line of historical loaning; it means actually approximating the meaning with another word or phrase.
As another example that might be easier to follow, since the loaning history is not circular: we should generally render sayounara as "Farewell" or "Goodbye" despite the fact that the word "Sayonara" is also an English word -- since the connotations are different in each language.
This is exactly the kind of subtlety that sets apart quality translators from obnoxious fan translators. (Note: I don't mean to imply that all fan translators are bad or make this mistake.) |

Man, this really made my night.
So, Broco, would a quality translator try to be interpretive with the "GET" or just leave it as is. I'm guessing the former. |

| Good translation is always interpretive. It's better to see it as a form of exegesis instead of a mechanical conversion of words and grammar. |

It was in context. They were talking about how he took some liberties to make the phrases more internet-slang like such as "This is a good thread" to "Thread delivers," so he was saying it was ironic that he didn't take the opportunity to use the "GET!" phrase. _________________

"___"GET is also used on American messageboards, 4chan in particular.
So, simply translating the line as "TV GET!" or "Television GET!" is fine too
:P
Nice thread tho, I LOL'd. |

| Translation must take into account constraints that include viagra context, the rules of grammar of the two languages, their writing conventions, and their idioms. A common misconception is that there exists a simple word-for-word correspondence between any two languages, and that translation is a straightforward mechanical process; such a word-for-word translation, however, cannot take into account context, grammar, fitness equipment conventions, and idioms. Translation, when practiced by relatively bilingual individuals but especially when by persons with limited proficiency in one or both languages, involves a risk of spilling-over of idioms and usages from the source language into the target language. On the other hand, inter-linguistic spillages have also served the useful purpose of importing calques and loanwords from a source language into a target language that had cialis previously lacked a concept or a convenient expression for the concept. Translators and interpreters, professional as well as amateur, have thus played an important role in the evolution of languages and cultures. The art of translation is as old as written literature. Parts of the Sumerian Epic of Gilgamesh, among the oldest known literary works, have been found in translations into several Asiatic weight loss languages of the second millennium BCE. |

I thought the whole "---GET" thing started when it appeared in Super Mario Sunshine. _________________
