Wouldn't it be, you know, smarter to re-release Radiant Silvergun instead? Most everyone who would be interested in Ikaruga has played in either on DC or the US Gamecube release. On the other hand, there are a lot of people who would actually like to play RSG and haven't had the opportunity. Supposing the amount of "frothing demand" to actually play either game in any form is about the same (people who are open to playing 2D vert shooters being the assumed sample group here), don't you think you'd sell more of the one people have been denied access to? I'm sure there are people who would re-buy either, but I'd guess there would be more people who would pass on Ikaruga as an "I already have it/played it" game than would be the case for RSG.

Note that this comes from someone who really doesn't even like RSG - I bought it the week of original Saturn release and always hated it, I'm glad somebody tripled my investment because of stupid internet hype. To this day I think RSG is one of the most overrated games ever in any genre. I do like Ikaruga a good bit more, interestingly enough...

And I guess maybe I just explained one possible conspiracy theory - one could say RSG really isn't that good and it lives based on cult status and hype, and that would go away if it was easliy available for people to actually judge on its merits as a game. Therefore, why bother releasing it and spoiling the legend?

And yes, perhaps developers are more comfortable porting from Naomi than ST-V. But that wouldn't be exciting and controversial, now would it?

Another reason: controllers don't have 6 face buttons any more. Not that you would need them... But it would be nice, says I.

Never stopped Street Fighter ports ;P Seeing Capcom vs. SNK 2 on a Gamecube made me quite positive nobody gives a shit about proper controller button layouts. And fighting games on portables. Hell, even 6-button Capcom stuff on SNES, PSX/2, and Xbox/360 sort of irks me. Not that I can't use a controller besides the pack-in. Hell, I have a DOA4 stick for my 360 so I have a stick with a nice 6 button layout ready to go.

Yeah Ikaruga looks fantastic, but there are so many other awesome games for the system that to say you have it set up only for Ikaruga would mean you are wasting a Dreamcast.

Here here. And if you think you love Ikaruga enough to dedicate a system to it and you don't like any other shooters, you suck. And if you DO like other shooters and you can't find ANY on DC besides Ikaruga that you like, I think you haven't looked very hard at all.

It's safe to say there are quite a few people with Dreamcasts setup soly for playing Ikaruga and then there's the convenience of playing it from a hard drive to consider.

I absolutely agree that there would certianly be some market for re-selling Ikaruga to people who already own the DC (and inferior GC port) version. But there are probably even more people who never even got the chance to play RSG at all, and surely some of those who do own it and would re-buy it as well. Hell, Ikaruga sells RSG - there are a lot of people who jumped on the Ikaruga bandwagon way after RSG who are now really wanting a crack at the prequel they never played, right?

No, I'm pretty sure it's Ikaruga instead of RS for the same reason it's SotN instead of Rondo--one has better name recognition, and even if it'd be a greater service to players to provide a game that haven't actually played a thousand times, it's all about the feather-in-the-cap mentality.

That's an excellent response. Pretty good analysis of the likely reasoning., even if I don't know that I agree with that logic. I'd sell the Ikaruga name in hyping a game that people who would care might not already own in some form.

How is that stick, by the way? With Ikaruga and/or a new Treasure shmup coming and VF5 in summer... I kinda need one.

It's OK. Surprisingly solid for a US off the shelf stick. It sort of reminds me of the Dreamcast official sticks (the ASCII aka Agetec Stick sometimes referred to as "Green Goblin"). The Tekken 5 PS2 stick is also of very similar quality, if you're familiar with that one. It's certainly not comparable to hardcore custom sticks or the elite level retail stuff from Japan (e.g. the Hori Real Arcade Pro line). But it's worth what I paid for it, something like $40 on a EB clearance about a year ago.

Clicky Japanese style stick. The buttons aren't half bad, nicely clicky and springy in the convex Japanese style. The design is nice, classic 6 button layout with the RB and LB buttons moved to an unobtrusive top row with the start, back, and Xbox buttons. It supports headsets. I don't know if it's easily moddable.

I don't know how easy it will be to find one or how much they go for on the second hand market. I do know I would find SF2:HF unplayable without it. I also enjoy using it in a lot of XBLA games (honestly the majority of what I play on the system).

Perhaps Sega or HORI will make a high end stick near Virtua Fighter 5's release on 360 like they both did to coincide with VF5's PS3 release. Something to look out for.
