Chaz's awesome post on Getsufuu Maden two FKW's ago was what got me reading the Insert Credit forums regularly. As a bit of a tribute I thought I'd try to seek out other Konami 8-bit classics that never made overseas.
Thus far the most worthwhile thing my search has turned up is Almana no Kiseki for the Disk System. Its a better Temple of Doom game than the one Mindscape put out, which ain't saying much. You play as a pretty blatant Indy-clone initially armed with a limited supply of Castlevania-esque throwing knives. You can expand your arsenal with a pistol, bombs, and weird magical balls of death.
The game's gimmick is the hero's grappling hook. Its only bridges gaps at a 45 degree angle and it doesn't work too good midair, so Ninja 5-0's grand daddy this ain't.
Yeah, some of the platforming feels sort of broken especially when there's spears constantly shooting out at you and your hook keeps coming up a couple pixels short, but its Fucking Konami so the music's pretty swell (plus it borrows a couple sound effects from Simon's Quest). Here's some pretty pictures:
All the Minoian bull-jumping women turned to stone!
Here's the rather elaborate grappling hook and its giant stand
Dragons!? Why'd it have to be dragons!?
