X-men, Aliens, Simpsons, Violent Storm (thanks dess), TMNT, etc. All those games that have a jump, an attack, and a jump+attack special move. The same game with a hundred different skins.

I played Violent Storm with a flamboyantly homosexual friend. He chose Boris and yelled "FAAABULOOOOOUUUS" every time that character did his spinning clothesline/pirouette special move, and we laughed far too hard every time. The light-hearted violence and sexual undertones are really a delight.

i'm gunna get you eventually.
everybody wanna knock gildo down.
i'll go straight to sheena
and i'll be there yes i will.
this world is very difficult
but i've got nothing to lose, now.
there's no defeat. you'd sooner die;
challenge the begining of the end.
'till i rescue sheena
i'm never gunna stop.
believe my power;
now i spend my time fighting all around.
i'm a tough guy; do it man.
you'd think you can beat us
we got the look! oh so fine!
just wait, i'll get even with you. _________________

they lack the compeling depth that made streets of rage playable, a unique selling point in the brawler genre
I'd much rather motion control my joystick and pound my buttons, thanks |

okay, for the purpose of this discussion, "compelling depth" is nonsense. a brawler is a brawler when you get down to it. they aren't all made equal, but they're all made to be fun.
I have two vague memories of Konami arcade games....actually, they are about the only arcade game memories I have.
The first was the first time I saw the full-size X-MEN cabinet. That was pretty mind blowing.
The other was one of the rare times I spent a significant amount of time in an arcade. It was at the original TMNT machine, and there was this young guy who must've just won the lottery or something because he was just slamming quarters into all four slots, letting kids come up and play alongside him as they beat the game silly through sheer brute force. I can't remember whether I played alongside him (I think I did, for a bit), but just seeing somebody be so generous was really awesome. I wish I knew what kind of life that guy went on to live.
Also, I may not have experienced it on arcade, and it may not be perfect, but holy shit is Turtles in Time ever a classic. Plenty of clever touches and one of the catchiest sountracks I've ever heard. _________________

So why are most of them joyless repetition challenges that force you to coin feed? Huh? |

When was about 8 or 9, that makes my sister 14 or 15, she stole my parents car for the day while they were at work and we were on summer break. She took my brother and me along with her to the mail and gave us $10 in quarters (like, HOLY SHIT) so that we wouldn't tell our parents that she was borrowing the car to go shoplifting (as I would later learn). My brother and I went to the shitty arcade and finally got our hands dirty with the only good game in there: the Simpsons Arcade Game. We beat it. We beat that goddamn game with $10 in quarters. A powerful testament to the one great truth in life. _________________

Barring stuff like the US version of Crime Fighters, I don't recall many that truely forced you to coin feed. Yes, they sometimes had some really cheap insta-kills and a few other high damage attacks, but you could with skill get through them?
The US version of Crime Fighters was different. It had Gauntlet-style life counters that constantly decreased, except with no in-game way to restore them. While I think one credit got you to the first stage boss, I'm not entirely sure you had the time to beat him. (Beating the first stage boss without taking hits was time consuming unless you were playing with friends. Except taking time meant you were losing life anyway.) |

I had no idea that such a joyless repititon challenge could be beaten with one coin. |
