Mr Business, run away to fight another day!
don't stress, option! FKW is not a period of time, it is a state of mind!
I am now equipped with two cats!!, so I am hoping they are lucky cats like they have in Japan.
okay I was screwing around and I lost a cat but the remaining one is orange and very faithful so LET'S DO THIS
WITH REGULAR LASER! okay the other cat came back and is trying to find a spot to lay okay there it goes. So far so good! Okay the cat left again, no wait, he's trying to find a way onto my non-existant lap. Dammit cat lay down! I think my ship is too fast. Cat there is no lap here! LAY DOWN man cat why you gotta do this. Wait a second, how does a giant amoeba fly in space anyways? Okay the frantic cat just left. Whew.
Dammit! Double dammit! Dammit again! DAMMIT! 84,300, a little bit into stage three. I'm going back to vertical.
Hey, do you think the sand dragons might actually be made of sand? It looks like sand going poof when they expode. Are they silicon-based lifeforms? DAMMIT. WHOA YEAH I JUST CLEARED THE THINGS THAT KILLED ME ON STAGE THREE THANK YOU OPTIONS FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE. Fucking robot dancing volcanos (???). SHIT boss got me :( DON"T PUT ME BEFORE THE DANCING VOLCANOS! FUck I'm hosed. Fuck! What a horrible checkpoint! 127300, DANCING VOLCANO ROBOTS.
Okay, now I'm going to try Tailgun for awhile, against my better judgment. I want to get up and get something to drink, but this cat is relying on me for heat and warmth. I will instead have another of the chocolate chip creme pies that should be revolting but instead are just there and kind of, sort of tasty. MUNCH. Okay, that was very unfulfilling. Time for tailgun! Actually, I kind of like it, as a word. Tailgun! Tailgun! Tailgun!
DAMMIT! I didn't even...argh. Okay, is it just my imagination, or does the tailgun fire faster backward than forward? Okay, there's boss one down. WHY WAS I NOT MAKING A DENT IN THE BOSS WHAT THE FUCK. Man, the regular gun is already kind of good. Okay, I'm going to screw tailgun and pick up RIPPLE MY OLD FRIEND. DAMMIT. DAMMIT AGAIN. 80,500. Beginning of stage three. I'm going to try Double forward again, see if I can copy any of Options success.
Are the sand dragons on the side of whomever I'm fighting against, or are they just trying to eat me for food/pleasure? Okay stage three no troubles I am feeling good about this DON'T JINX IT DON'T JINX IT. SHIT! FUCKING SAND ZONE! ARGH AGAIN. DAMMIT! FUCK! FUCK AGAIN! FUCKING DANCING VOLCANOS! 119000. Dancing volcano robots.
I am through for the night. I am not built for this. _________________

I'm a little late to the party, but i am game for this game
y'all this be my first gradius ever
which i guess UNFORGIVABLE for one who went as far at one time to even list 'shmups' as one of his livejournal interests
okay i'm selecting stuff what is all this stuff
i think this is why i used to stay away from gradius before - all these 'options' and whatever seem confusing
okay i'm playing and man my ship is moving slow
okay power up! that speed up thing is highlighted why isn't me ship going faster?
death try again
okay i'm playing and man my ship is moving slow
okay power up! that speed up thing is highlighted why isn't me ship going faster?
wait another power up it just moved forward one
are these cycling powerups?
nothings happening
OH
OH
OH i need to press a button to activate it
OH! i see what they're doing here
this is pretty clever!
discliamer!i'm dying many many times now throughout the following section:
wow those bullets are coming right for me
there is desert in space!
i'm fighting the boss
beaten with speed up only!
there are bubbles in space!
i'm fighting the boss
i'm going right inside this bubblefucker
BLAM
Are the stages in this seamless?
I'm starting again with edit mode, based on suggestions and configurations here
i'm getting the hang of this powerup system
options ARE what you go for first (other than a quick speed up)
dang, rotation options are amazing
i've gotten to stage 3 (i think ... forests) without dying, though i'm playing on an emulator and there is slowdown when i'm firing everything.
i died through doing something stupid
i'll get back to this later. i need to play more graidus games now! thanks FKW and Dark Age! |

also: i think the only reason this game is hard is because when you die it strips you of ALL POWER you may have, which is just a slap in the face if you ask me.
Normally it would make sense, but considering all the love, care, precision, and labor once puts into powering up a gradius ship, it's pretty hard to lose it all. maybe that's what makes the game, though. |

Wow... I'm really glad that stage isnt in the SNES one... It doesnt look fun at all!
Also, that friggin fast-corridor stage (stage 7 I think) is my bane. I can get there almost not even paying attention anymore... but right when I get there I die over...and over... and over.... =(
Sometimes to the yellow walls, sometimes to the controller reading wrong, sometimes to stray bullets, sometimes to the boss...
I refuse to use save-states or "the kode" though... man that would make this game so so easy ... NO! I am having fun learning the nuances of the game through trial and error and if I started in with the cheats I would just cheapen the entire thing, replacing the slight proud feeling I am getting with "why did I bother?"... and that would be no fun I think. |

Uh, I think it goes without saying that cheating is not the answer. So yeah, stick with it!

One of MANY secret levels (thanks for the rest Roger!). This one is the only one I've tried yet. Take your chance here, you'll get a LOT of weapons and lives maybe, but you'll probably get killed when the pink blobs wipe you out.
Pretty easy to get here, just go into the bottom gap near the end of level 2 where the bubble-encased ships come from.
I've forgotten to show you level 3, its just another upside down volcano stage, but there's a secret here too: Destroy all of the guns on the ground. Fly close to the low rock ceiling toward the end of the level and the secret warp point is immediately before the last "mountain". |

latest attempt
spread bomb, double, twin laser, snake option, reduce, weird option thing
"Remain Option: Converts your extra lives into Options." man that sucks
after experimenting around a lot with weapon edit, I randomly chose this (from doing the roulette code) and experimented, and for some reason I just stuck with it. I didn't like the snake option very much, nor the last bonus thing, but the rest was pretty effective.
I wasted a life early on. didn't think I'd be doing this for real.
okay I admit I used the code several times but I think it only works 2 or 3 times at most I'm not sure.
I got past Stage 3 and Stage 4 and well quite a lot of Stages, I lost track of where I was, because this had been the first time I'd even seen anything past stage 3. I was amazed when I managed to do the high-speed stage perfectly on the first try. and I had 0 lives for most of it too since I wasted so many early on, so extra tension!
eventually I die to some boss that looks like a crystal with two tentacles. stupid stupid mistake. my last remaining life is immediately lost, at that part right before the boss rush, where the 40 powerup-carrying things appear and try to crash into you. I did not get very powered up before they hit me. |

| You know, the more I think about it, the more I realize taht the "Turn your lives into options" power is probably the best one. It's not like those lives will do you any good anyway, right? |

bah, well I came close...
I still died at the speed corridor but I was able to rebound and build up again after tossing a bunch of lives into it. I even managed to kill a few bosses with just the starting pea shooter.
I lost my last life on the 2nd of those giant spider walker guys.
I will try again some time if it is released on VC or if I get a better non-broken controller for my mac. |

FUCKITY-FUCK FUCK!!!!!!
Yeah, I HAVE been playing the arcade version. I'm a LOT better at it than I was three days ago. It still makes me cry. Stage 5 boss is my retirement point. SNES pansies, if you really want a tortured soul fire up some arcade Gradius III.
Oh, and that boss on the Youtube video - not that hard at all. The crisscross patern isn't that tough to dodge and during the "little bullets" shooting part you can just sit outside his range to the top or bottom of the screen and let your options do the work. The tunnel stage afterwards is really easy too. I'm not sure what parts of this are even in the SNES version, haven't played that in ages. |

guys i had the chance to play the arcade version
and
wow
shit!
it makes the SNES Gradiaus III look like "Hajimete no Gii - Your First Step to Gradius" Most of the weapons in edit mode are totally different and far less powerful (no rotating options!) and there is a seperate button to hold down for missles (ps. no hawkwind). and when you get lasers, which you have to hold down for a different duration, it can really mess you up.
wow
but it's addicting |

I've taken to using the nice little save state feature in the PSP Gradius Collection. It only saves at certain checkpoints though, so you still need skill. Man, that GIII arcade is HARD, I still can't finish it even with save states. But at least I can reload and not lose all my powerups to get practice going through the sections.
I think I'm gonna fire up SNES GIII just to feel like a badass now.
Also, I think the reason that I was never that into the Gradius series is that the reliance on getting powerups then never dying is a fundamentally lousy gameplay mechanic. |

I dont mind it... I kinda like it actually.
I think they originally wanted to make a game that was only one life per credit to add to the preasure of the game. Playing the game on Mame or SNES detracts from this a bit. Dying on the home versions is just sort of annoying, but in the arcade when you have money on the line... it makes that one life battle that much more intense.
The point of adding the extra lives as I see it, is to let the player see the patterns or enemy attacks in the area they died, so they can be better prepared for when they get there again. In that respect the creators were actually throwing the players a bone.
Also if you DO manage to actually build up again, hey more power to you, it takes a lot of skill/practice to do that in most versions of the game.
I saw an interview with the director of Gradius V and he said a lot of the people working on the game felt that it didnt "feel like Gradius". He didnt say why exactly, but it might be attributed to how easy it is to power up again after you lose a life.
Dispite this, it was a smart desision in my opinion because of the fact that the credits are free. With no real investment people might think they are being punished instead of defeated. |

the code is there to use. use it.
it builds up one use of the code for every level. so, if you don't use it until the end, you can use it however many times you need to. i usually do this, because the last few levels are horrific if you die and start powerless. _________________
