Try kubuntu then.
I have currently WiXP, ubuntu and kubuntu on my HDDs and I'm pretty impressed with kubuntu, since I knew that KDE wasn't THAT good some years ago when I first considered to switch to Linux.

Now, though, it seems like KDE is fine and never had a problem so far, except for when I messed around with the xorg.conf-file and ... uh, accidentally switched some values.

Nevertheless, I even got my Samsung Z5 to be recognised, so I think that's a pretty good sign that Linux can be usable if you have just a slight notion of what you are doing.

It might be slower in linux because linux has a much better (though more cpu intensive) font anti-aliasing system.

If you're going to get some real video card drivers rather than the supplied ones, you ought to nab a copy of elinks so you can still bounce around the internet looking for help if something goes bad.
