Good points about using visual cues to let the player know what's coming.
Need to go back to God Hand. The samurai boss made me punch myself in anger a few times. Yeah, maybe I shouldn't go back to it. Man it was a fun ride though. |

Nice of you to say, but I'm honestly not joking when I say I don't have much free time these days. I seldom sit and do anything (other than schoolwork, I guess) in my room for more than a half hour, so putting in at least six hours to edit this probably wouldn't fly for me, though it's honestly something I'd really enjoy doing just for the challenge of it. Aside from the obvious stuff of trying to trim the fat and transform the whole thing into a lean, interesting, funny conversation, I'd be really into trying to balance the volume and sound quality problems and find creative solutions to the problem of taking-turns-style audio.
Though as far as subtle audio manipulation, you'd think there'd be someone around here who does that for a living or dabbled in college, right? Anyone? _________________ "Godzilla could be anyone."

So listening to chunks of this now, I'm finding myself enjoying the conversation, despite what I see mostly as technical hurdles. I especially like the rapport that starts to develop towards the end (I particularly like the screwing around that happened after I left). Toups, I feel like you might make a good host if you really decided to step into that role (though maybe you're too chill; I dunno).
What I was trying to get at by saying that half our problems would be fixed if we were meeting in person is that maybe rather than trying to come up with a way to limp along with what we've got we should try and find a way to approximate actually meeting physically as much as possible? I don't know: is there something like iChat for PC's? I don't have a webcam myself, but--well--how much are they? But then I guess that completely ruins the democratic spirit of trying to have a podcast that could potentially include almost any member of the board? I actually think that's the ideal solution, though--rather than trimming around the lag in Audacity or creating some sort of arcane talking structure. _________________ "Godzilla could be anyone."

YES. before you do anything else, do this. at first I turned the volume up so that I could hear p1 (who does sound a lot like the Terminator; is that an audio filter or something?). Couldn't keep it that way because Cuba (who talks almost exactly the way he writes) was too loud then. Actually Cuba was just right and p1 was way too low.
P1, this could be a problem with your soundcard not being able to handle the resistance of your mic. Or your mic just sucks.
So, I was listening to this while riding the bike and that made some noise too. I didn't want to fiddle with the volume all the time so all I could hear was mostly unintelligible chatter from p1daone and, I think, Renfrew, with Cuba coming out just fine. This wasn't too bad because Cuba made the best jokes anyway. Was the best speaker all around. Was the only one who had some showmanship.
Toups joined and was so loud I could smell his bad breath.
Basically nothing was said that I did know already. Nothing that was enlightening in any way. Cuba was great fun and Toups was a cool and relaxed speaker.
Still, even they failed to elevate the videogame talk to a meaningful level... there were many missed opportunities. Many, many missed opportunities. In a way this felt like a final "goodbye" to the old days of insert credit, FFDog and Tim's various other videos. It was just fanboy talk. You really played it straight. (Did you see Tropic Thunder? Robert Downey Jr.'s "you don't go full-retard" speech?) You just straight up talked about videogames, without any kind of insight, without putting it into any kind of relation to the world at large or your personal lives. And I don't mean saying "I love God Hand!!". I am talking about communicating a personal philosophy, your way of making sense of the world.
Really, the only thing I remember about it now is that Cuba called himself a cynic and lazy, and how he's not interested in changing people's behavior. Which was pretty interesting and one of those missed opportunities to tie in videogame shit with something that actually matters. Or vice versa. I also remember his TMKF diss ("Cuba, do you have something more interesting to say than me?") that was just way too fucking good. I thought of that one a split second before he said it. Made me laugh so hard. I also remember that apparently nobody had a mathematical understanding of games like Chess and Go, and so nobody could talk about their relation to videogames properly. Even though TMKF supposedly learned about them in Game Class. Hell, even little things like why people hate you for playing a certain class or mastering a certain weapon in an online game weren't made sense of, even though there was the question of what kind of behavior can and cannot be changed through changes in rule sets. Just so much obvious stuff that would be applicable to other areas of life. That would let you see the connections.
None of this has to do with the fact that this was your first recording, I don't think. It's just something that's... personality, perhaps. Let's just say that it makes Brandon, Tim and Eric-Jon even more impressive than they already were in my mind. They've just become a bit rarer.
Oh yeah: TMKF, you sound exactly the way you look, not the way you write! And that "damn you people!" actually reminded me of Brandon. That was pretty funny.
In closing: Everybody get the kind of mic Toups had because it sounded the most high res. And good luck in the future with this. |

BBP, you raise some good points, but I think some of it is can be explained. We may have missed a lot of opportunities, but it was very hard to jump in and take advantage of an opportunity. I think we were all having different lag problems, so usually by the time someone would finish talking and I would want to make a point about what they said, that person would have finished talking 10 seconds earlier for someone else and so somebody else would have already started talking. Sometimes I would jump in when I knew that the person had actually finished but I was still hearing them talk, and it would be really hard to get my thoughts together until the voice I was hearing would stop.
I also think you are discounting the fact that at the heart of this it really was just a meet and great. We didn't have a moderator, we barely stayed on the proposed topic, but we did start to get used to actually talking to each other. I think as we get a format figured out and a moderator to lead the discussion, the quality of the discussion will definitely improve. Also, I'm doing this to improve myself. I'm not happy with my level of cognition concerning these things and my lack of real participation in discussions. I see this podcast as a real kind of do or die type of situation that will hopefully force me to raise my abilities and help me to participate in more thoughtful discussions. |

Ren, seriously: don't bother. Nobody is more aware than me that that recording represents a lot of problems that need to be acknowledged, confronted, and surmounted, but BBP didn't speak to any of them. It's perfectly valid to hold the project to a high standard, but apparently BBP's ideal podcast would consist of us relating Godhand to various women we've fucked and then discussing which vegan burrito we favor. Also: comparing the supposedly objective value of a casual conversation to a written essay is ridiculous. BBP, have you actually heard Brandon talk on a podcast? It's not as if he rattles off words of wisdom, nor does Tim by the way. I get that you really like Tim, but by no means would I ever want SB Radio (or whatever) to be Timcast.
In closing: Toups, please get a different mic, because it was picking up a lot of background noise and audio artifacts, like your shifting in your chair and some sort of weird rhythm. _________________ "Godzilla could be anyone."

yo i want to hear that.
y'all the first time we talked about doing a podcast google volunteered his services, he apparently managed the player podcast. if you go back through the archives it's a pretty fine podcast. one very relevant piece of information is that it only ever had three or maybe max four people on it at a time. this relates to what i was talking about at the end yesterday, how the confusion and trepidation is more a function of the sheer number of people + technical inevitabilities and probably isn't curable. _________________ Let's Play, starring me. |
