Play.d Podcast 4 - Storytelling in Games Part 2.

Welcome to the fourth episode of the Play.d Podast. This week, we continue our chat from last week and discuss a little further into why storytelling in videogames lacks the substance to that of film. I get PWNed by the other boys, and Gonzo acts like a miserable fool, while doing the best Resident Evil 2 impression this side of 1999!

Enjoy it, and of course, all feedback is welcome.

#1 "martin" -- whatever microphone he's using, everyone should be using

#2 ape escape 3 is brilliant and confused -- it could be excellent if a tiny bit more focused. if only they'd make one for PS3 . . . . . . !!

See, I've been debating this...does a $75 mic, really give a better service than a $20?

Obviously, a professional $400 mic will help, but I dont know about these lower price 'consumer' models.

Also, Ape Escape 3, really not as much fun as the original...

But hey, you're welcome to come onto the poddy next week with your views!

I guess it does!

It's not as new as the original, though it does scores of things right. For example, giving each monkey a personality and making each monkey something like a stage in and of itself is pretty good. Like, I remember a monkey in the ice level who keeps running back and forth across a zig-zagging ice bridge. You have to catch him, of course, as with every other monkey, and you might fall off the bridge and into the water and have to swim to shore and chase the monkey again. The first time, you might fall into the water and go SHIT!! And then it might happen again, and you'll be like SHIT!! again. You might even say "Just KILL me!! Don't make me CLIMB OUT of here!!"

And then, maybe, it kind of hits you. The game's not about dying and failing so much as it's about learning to succeed.

So yeah, little things like that. It could use a little bit more actiony rhythm.

Give me a schedule or something. I do indeed have a Macbook Pro over here, and that's got a hell of a built-in mic.

You know, Ape Escape had a certain sense of, "Wow, look at these fucking monkeys! They're crazy, and you have to catch them!"

It was like an episode of Friends, and I was fucking Joey!

Well, we record them at 8AM PST (which is 12AM in China - Im not sure where Mike is in China, but it cant be too far off you?) on Sundays.

Anyway, if 12AM is too late for little ol' Timbo, im sure I can wake up earlier...

12AM sounds perfect.

more notes

#3 final fantasy = for geeks -- not really! the secretary in my office played through FFX and she's definitely not a geek; furthermore, she's also played through every dragon quest game. my ex-girlfriend, who was a god damned MODEL, had played through every final fantasy game, as well, so hey.

#4 american accents in spartan total warrior -- gahh. it's not so bad. they were playing for an audience. the story was schlock anyway. the glory of the game is the crunch. it's fucking crunch all over. and no one fucking got it, anyway; not a review passed that didn't compare it to god damned dynasty warriors, which is so different anyway.

try the japanese version for some awesome voices!!

I got it.

I fucking got it.

You ever tried telling people to stop jacking off to Musou though? It's like they're ZOMBIES, man. They can't stop forking over for their £35 standard version even after Koei have announced the fucking expansion pack is on its way. I've never seen people get so militant about a non-RPG in my life.

A friend of mine buys every standard edition DW game. He'll tell me how fun it is, and I'll reply, every time

"Why didn't you just wait for the expansion, though?"

"I don't want the expansion I want to play new DW. After I buy it I'm not touching the expansions anyway, so I'm winning."

"JESUS H. CHRIST THEY ARE SELLING YOU A DISC WHICH HAS HAD CONTENT REMOVED FROM IT IN ORDER TO PROVIDE FEATURES FOR EXPANSION DISCS. SEE THOSE COMPLETELY UNPLAYABLE GENERALS? GUESS WHEN THEY'LL SHOW UP? 6 TO 8 MONTHS LATER, YOU STUPID WHORE. YOU LOSE, COCKGOBBLER."

(Cockgobbler was a username a friend of mine a long time ago signed up for Disney MMO Toontown Online with. Disney never noticed until 18 months down the line. I await (and will actually buy)the Kingdom Hearts game that features an enemy called C. Gobbler, just to know that the Disney admin really made it in the videogame industry. Here's to you, pal.)

"Hey, man. Do not pursue Lu Bu, is all I'm saying."

Yeah, though. Spartan: TW is such a goddamn man's game. A game where you're watching 15 different arrows and 10 different men over the top of your shield at any given time. You use the block button as often as the attack buttons, because these guys thought about what having a block button really means and allows for. As the first proper action game by Creative Assembly, its pretty astounding how tuned-in they are about arcade-style balance. You siege a castle in the fucking Alps, man. It's like all the scripted shit you see in WWII FPSes, but actually happening in front of you, in an arcade-style brawler. Every time you complete a stage, your character gains more armour and incidental clothing detail and generally looks more and more awe-inspiring. By the time you reach Rome you've even got a wee leopardskin skirt/sporran thing going on (hi winker). Hundreds of citizens (literally hundreds, Koei) are fleeing through the streets, the Romans have busted out fucking ROME-NINJAS with iron masks and black cloaks, and ROME-FLAMETHROWERS (get behind them and pierce the fuel tank for uhhhhhhh, massive damage i suppose). When you storm the Colosseum you find you've walked into a gladiator uprising, and fight alone against two opposing forces at once.

It needs a next-gen sequel. Fuck knows how many enemies they could push onto the screen. These guys will be talking about having a BILLION INDIVIDUAL SOLDIERS ON-SCREEN while Koei jack off about moving the fog layer 3 yards back. Call it Celt: Total Warrior (we'll call it this partly because of a pub I was in with Mr Apol and Ruddiger called THE WARRIOR CELT, and partly because one can start on the westernmost point of Europe and move east, see?). It'll be like a mashup CD of mythical and actual historical figures without giving a toss about who lived when. I'm talking about bumping into William Wallace on your way to meeting Robin Hood to get that fucking Sheriff of Nottingham. Then you take on some cult of plague doctors in London before boating off to France and beyond. The game's finale would involve coming back to Britain with a cadre of XTREME HISTORICAL LEGENDS (think Bill n Ted), aboard the Spanish Armada or something, to create the NEO CELTIC EMPIRE.

Dynasty Warriors is such an arcade-like game. fun to play with a friend for a few minutes of fun SLASH SLASH SLASH action once in a while. and like Street Fighter II, updates minor features every few months without changing the main content. Logically it shouldn't even be selling so well as an expensive console game(s). how the hell did they get this to work so well financially!?

I liked Koei back before they sold out! and those Chinese Generals too, all sellouts.

Well, I'll be reviewing the game, along with Romance, so we'll see how I fare...

I love the games you can dip in and out of, as they seem to fit with my schedule perfectly (I just played 20 sexual minutes with Ridge Racer 6).

Yes.

You know. Creative Assembly are hiring producers for their next big next-gen console game, and my buddy in London is interviewing. I wrote him a letter of recommendation. Fuck yes. Inside source.

So apparently the next one is coming because enough indie mother fuckers like me raved about the game to encourage them to try again, I guess.

Man -- did we talk about this in Tokyo? Because I thought it was totally my idea to make the next game about Celtic Total Warrior.

I remember just touching the controller at E3 and one of the Creative Assembly guys glides up to me and, almost about to sigh, says, "This is the block button!" And I go -- oh. Oh. Oh. Oh. Yes! Yes, it is! And then we had gorgeous!

I just love how every messageboard thread about it complained that it was "obscenely difficult" or something. Not if you block!

Maztorre you should try Drakengard 2 if you want some more blockaliciousness. Though even it can't touch Spartan.

Man. Maybe I'll play some at home tonight. I wish the Xbox version had come out in Japan, and was compatible to the 360 :(

I'm afraid not sir, I was entirely in train-of-thought-on-this-Monday-morning-with-a-cup-of-tea-in-Ireland status when I came up with that. Although Spartan was being released in Japan around the time I was there, they had the kiosks set up in ockyblah-blah for it.

Yeah, I mean, these guys will make a success out of it. They intended all along to make Total Warrior the same kind of successful brand that Total War has become.

You fellows have convinced me to seek out Total Warrior, a game was anticipating but which I then neglected because of all the questionable things I heard upon release.

Now it sounds interesting again.
