that word does not mean "vegetarian". literally, etymologically it means "person who eats vegetables". the word for "vegetarian" in japanese is just "vegetarian" (in katakana). that word means "person who has no ambition". well, more than that, it means a person who doesn't rely on money for happiness. it means someone who is content with what he has.

It's not quite a modchip. Rather, if I've got the (still developing) story straight, those guys got their hands on a combination of software (previously available, I believe) and a specialized USB stick, the combination of which basically allows any PS3 (at the current firmware or below) to use the features of a debug PS3, notably the option to copy a full game to the hard drive. To my knowledge, the USB device is something that would actually have to be taken (read: stolen) from a developer themselves, and the planned reproduction/sale of it won't even be a gray area - it'll be flat out illegal.
to quote the NeoGAF topic:
| Code: |
This USB stick is confirmed to boot the PS3 into some sort of service/debug mode, and while the package comes with a backup manager, the important thing is that the USB jigkick allows for unsigned code to be launched by retail PS3s.
This means that CFW for PS3 is now a possibility. People can write apps and boot them from this USB stick. Imagine a CFW where all region coding is disabled, one can use their PS3 as a PS2HDloader (if they have a BC unit), play your library of PSP games via PS3 and XBMC on PS3 is possible. It will also be possible to launch linux via this USBstick, and probably even launch old installations on post OtherOS killing firmware. |

When you mention that Vincent is a "vegetarian," maybe it's in reference to "herbivore men?"
"They are young, earn little and spend little, and take a keen interest in fashion and personal appearance -- meet the 'herbivore men' of Japan.
Author and pop culture columnist Maki Fukasawa coined the term in 2006 in a series of articles on marketing to a younger generation of Japanese men. She used it to describe some men who she said were changing the country's ideas about just what is -- and isn't -- masculine."

Regarding this hacking of the PS3 - I'm curious if you could somehow use it to force your non-BC system to becomes PS2 BC...
I recall someone on here, a developer presumably, stating that while working with official development hardware, the PS3 / PS2 / PSP compatibility situation was akin to a series of selectable drop-down boxes in any PS3. Hence why the Minis were so suddenly PS3-compatible.
I could be remembering this wrong though, and I can't recall which topic it was in. |

I noticed, but both Descent Wiiware and Stonekeep Whatever seem to be vaporware.
Descent is one of my favorite series...used to play co-op with my father. I even liked Descent 3, although I admit I've never gotten more than a few levels into it. |

Kinda didn't help when Namco showed up at Bottle Rocket with a U-Haul to take all the dev kits back and then dump it on the internal Afro Samurai team. _________________

nah, I think it's more because it's namco. they had you play pac-man as you're loading some ridge racer game if I recall, and Tekken 5 did have previous Tekken games plus Starblade. _________________

So am I the only one who is very concerned that Catherine won't ever get an English localization? Violence is never an issue, but sexuality in games tends to freak western publishers and retailers out. And it's not as if there's no precedent for Atlus leaving SMT/Persona games in Japan. Still, SMT/Persona ARE at their highest popularity ever in the west and it has been a while since one of the games was passed on for western release (Devil Summoner remake on PSP is the last, I think). I can't help but get nervous thinking that the sexual themes might make this a harder sell for North America though (no pun intended).

Also... Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu (er... Resurrection) for iPod/iPhone/iPad is coming this week. August 26 (Thursday) in Japan, which means it may be showing up as early as Wednesday in the US due to time zone differences. Only $4.99 for a special introductory price for the first four days!

Whoever just deleted that post worrying about not understanding what the hell you actually DO in Catherine... you had a valid point. As I understand it from the fragmented information that's out there, the game seems to be some sort of action-adventure. I'd assume there's some amount of RPG influence in a SMT-related game. But if a large component of the game is more leaning toward being a visual novel style game (which wouldn't be incredibly shocking knowing Japanese trends these days), that might also make it a little less palatable for a Western audience, even for the niche crowd that normally supports Atlus RPG stuff.
Not that it doesn't look really intriguing to me so far, but I know that my personal tastes aren't exactly a great reflection of the market.
But maybe this is all me being devil's advocate and fear-mongering. Atlus USA DOES seem to need to have something to promote and sell in the upcoming year, their slate is looking pretty blank as-is without a ton of obvious prospects for new releases. Etrian Odyssey III and a few Sting games (Knights in the Nightmare and Blaze Union PSP, maybe Yggdra Unison on DS) seems like a pretty bare schedule that's even more low-volume/"niche only" than usual for Atlus, and Catherine would fit in nicely as their big console game to promote. |

Didnt the Mail and Times end up paying out a lot of money to 505 and the BBFC/Video Standards Council to stop them from filing a libel case? I recall seeing a report like that before but it got gagged fairly quickly.
Squeenix are the publisher for Atlus in Europe nowadays however, so a company with a good bit more legal muscle to put the frighteners on the mainstream press should be able to publish it while telling the papers to take a hike if it passes BBFC/PEGI standards. |

it seems to have a similar format to persona 3, wherein there's a dreamlike dungeon type thing that you progress through at night, and then adventure game/life-sim/dating type game that happens during the day, and the two run parallel to each other with occasional intersections... I don't imagine it being any less of a "real videogame" than p3 _________________

Makes a change from ever minor tidbit appearing here then, eh?
Other news: $50m game canned (This is Vegas) (more like This Was Vegas)
(well actually they'd spent $43m thus but it needed another $8m or so to finish) |

Lick Meth, if you think I've been posting every tidbit in here, you obviously haven't been paying attention.
Anyway, that's three out of four Halo games leaked. Considering how this one got out, I can only assume that Microsoft are incompetent.
Wonder if Activision will be any better.
Probably not. _________________
